Look closely. Look very closely. Is it ... a stained-glass window? A jigsaw puzzle? Give up? Just turn the page and, lo and behold, it's a monarch butterfly. See what looks like a pair of chopsticks revealed as a mormon cricket, a sponge as a strawberry, and many more surprises when you look closely into the garden. The Looking Closely series takes children on a journey of ...more

My daughter is seven months old, and we love reading this book together. She enjoys all of the colorful pictures, and I am happy that it captures her attention so completely. Although she is too young to appreciate it now, I am glad that the text is nonfiction and educational in an entertaining, engaging style. I think that this book is appropriate for children (and parents) of all ages. The gorgeous photography will make any young reader happy, and the information presented with each photograph ...more

Getting kids to look, to really observe without judgment, is huge. This series helps by taking away the context. There's a lot of information inside, too, but it never feels overwhelming. These are some beautiful photos. Also a natural model for children's work. A must-have for all K-5 collections.

Mr Serafini's delightful book is now a permanent fixture on my coffee table - except when it's being read by anyone who enters the room. His sumptuous photography and his inventive approach to engaging the reader make these books unique and tons of fun. I'm going to collect all of the Looking Closely books and share them as gifts -- they'll be memorable.

A challenging but fun guessing game featuring close up of photographs of various creatures and fruit/vegetables/plants that one finds in a garden. This whole series would make a great addition to storytime, especially for older children.
Carol
Excellent photographs. For some reason "The Pond" book in this series is of great interest to my two year old, this one not-so-much.
