There are a lot of books that treat the same subject: our society is more and more dependent of machines and humans are becoming useless. Of course most books on this topic are in the genre sci-fi, but this one is based on day to day life of the age of writer. It is more closer to modern theater and to philosophical approach to this matter.
All facts are filtered through a movie operator, Serafimo Gubbio, that it is working in the first days of cinema as a camera operator. All he has to do is to

How to gradually become a perfect operator, capturing life, but never quite living it. The most rational thing to do, in an irrational world. The fashionable escape. Despising it has come to this, but doing it non of the less, and with lucidity."Go, go and turn your handle, Serafino! Be assured that yours is a profession to be envied! And do not regard as more stupid than any others the actions that are arranged before your eyes, to be taken by your machine. They are all stupid in the same way, ...more

first time I've read Pirandello, who I think is best known for his drama. (this is a novel.) It's a complex book, much more so than I thought upon reading the first couple of chapters. I recommend making a diagram or chart of the characters to aid in keeping track of them. If you read it. The narrator is a camera operator for an Italian film studio. The book was published in 1916, when cinema was a relatively new art form. The narrator simply cranks the camera and observes, as he says repeatedly ...more

The main character is a cameraman, basically turning the wheels to send the film through in budding cinecitta. All about the mechanization of human life, and all kinds of superficialities, into which he also gets dragged by friends and company. Also one of the most passive characters I've ever come across. A few interesting themes which underpin the whole of the story, and a very well and consistently wrought book. Definitely not as original as "Sei personnaggi..."
