Here you will learn:
1) How to create a super cool, but smart-alecy heroine.
A) Also, learn to make a geeky hero/heroine seem cool.
2) How to create the best trampstamp (and incorporate it into the story seamlessly).
3) How to add a love interest to add just the right amount of sexy...if you didn't get enough with that trampstamp.
4) How to pose for the cover. In fact, if you want to specialize, Jim C. Hines' has a masters program.

I wasn't fully convinced by the events in the first half--people doing dumb, ill-advised, and/or suspect things. I'm not sure if the author doesn't have the female POV fully nailed down or if my quibbles have to do with age and outlook differences between myself and the character. The author has been to the places he describes and/or has done a lot of research, but I thought too much time was spent on the details of travel, hotels, etc.

Jayne and her posse head to New Orleans in book two of The Black Sun's Daughter Series. She has been contacted for help by one of her uncle's old aquaintances, Karen Black, an ex-FBI agent to help her rid the rider of a young girl.
The group has been working hard and fast for the past few months traveling the world to as many of Jayne's uncle's houses and storage units as possible trying to piece together his work and resources to better assist their needs and they are tired, weary, and in desper...more

Have you ever read a book or watched a movie, and been totally enthralled by the story right up until the moment that it finished and you could take a breath and think about it? That's kind of what happened to me with this book.
I read Darker Angels in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I'd loved the characters (except Aubrey) in the first book, and I found myself falling in love with them all over again in this one. The world-building is fantastic, the writing is smooth as silk. So I sat and r...more

This is the second book in the black sun's daughter series starring Jayne Heller demon slayer. Jayne and her team find themselves embroiled in a conflict with the voodoo queen of New Orleans.

Once again Jayné (every time I read that name it got my nerves) Aubrey, Ex and Chogyi Jake are in the thick of it again. When we left the foursome, they were busy doing a tour of not-gay uncle Eric's various homes, attempting to create a wiki on the riders. Though they are all exhausted, Jayné keeps pushing them forward, and this culminates in her acceptance of a mission in New Orleans. The minute I read New Orleans I knew that this books was going to be all about Voodoo.

"Eric, it's Karen. I've found it!" a women said. "It's in New Orleans, and I know where it's going next. There's a little girl with Sight, and she says her sister is the next target. I don't know how long I've got. I need you."
Jayné Heller has spent the past six months attempting to visit the properties her uncle Eric left her. Problem is she's only just scratched the surface. Attempting to learn more about her elusive uncle, she and her crew are creating a wiki of all the papers and artifacts...more

In Unclean Spirits, the first novel featuring Jayne Heller, she discovered her late uncle's demon-fighting legacy, a fortune and potential powers of her own.
As she continues on a quest of self-discovery, she encounters friends and foes, learning how to work with both and keep both at arm's length in Darker Angels.
Because Jayne has kept her uncle's phone, she gets a call from a someone who knew him -- and who needs help. Jayne and her band of hunters, who gathered around her in the opening novel,...more

Urban Fantasy- Sept 29th, 2009

Darker Angels is the 2nd in the MLN Hanover’s urban fantasy series. This series starts with tension and has some unexpected twists that are sure to keep the pages turning. I do feel it can be read alone. However, new readers will have a better understanding from having read the first book since it will give them insight into the nuances of the full cast of characters.

This book had quite a different style to it than the first. while the narrative was the same the layout of the story lines were different. this worked out mostly because in the story we had a precog. there was a lot of "If i thought about what they said more it would have saved..." and "turns out that is not what they meant.." normally that would grate on me, especially when it is in reference to characters that were not the precog, but somehow it all worked.

Jayne Heller, who inherited her uncle's fortune and his demon-hunting business, along with a "posse" of three guys with vastly different backgrounds and characters, continues along on her path of self-discovery in this second book in the The Black Sun's Daughter series.
Jayne and the boys are jetting from city to city digging through her uncle's houses and business in an effort to get some kind of handle on her uncle's knowledge of the posessing "riders" who inhabit human bodies and sometimes for...more

Man, I just love this series! Darker Angel finds Jayne' Heller (pronounced Shay-nay) and her group heading towards New Orleans after receiving a phone call from former FBI agent Karen Black. Karen has been deligently on the trail of a murderous rider who wants to attack a teenage girl. Jayne' is wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, attraction for Aubrey and her ever increasing self transformation. The characters are awesome, the action is never ending and it is nice to watch Jayne' change from...more
Think of all the cities in the world, now which one would you pick as a hot bed for ghost and demon like paranormal activity? Naturally, New Orleans!
Book two picks up right where book one left off without missing a beat. JaynÉ and her guys are still searching all of Eric’s spread out homes searching for clues. That quickly gets dumped when she gets a call for help to track down a serial killer who happens to be possessed. Who needs vacation time when there is a demon on the loose?

Darker Angels is the second book in the Black Sun's Daughter series by M.L.N. Hanover and a vast improvement over the first one. The story was well thought out and the writing flowed seamlessly. The author really found the rhythm in this book and it showed in the descriptions and character development. The beginning was a bit slow but towards the middle and throughout the rest of the book, there was plenty of adventure, action and story to keep you reading through to the next page. I loved that...more
My inner curmudgeon nearly set Darker Angels aside at about the halfway point. "I don't get this book!" said the curmudgeon. "The voodoo's all wrong. Legba isn't an evil serial killer! The good guys' plan doesn't quite add up, and is pretty unethical besides. And the interpersonal drama just ate the plot for lunch!"
"Sit down and shut up," said M.L.N. Hanover. "I'm telling a story here."
OK, so I've never met M.L.N. Hanover, and he didn't literally say that, but he might as well have. Because jus...more

I love this book. The second had everything in it that the first did, only it had room to expand. Jayne is by no means an expert. She is still bumbling away through many situations and learning as she goes. If anything, this book has taught her once again how little she does know. I love that they’ve changed the setting to New Orleans. There is so much there to explore between the rich culture of voodoo and the fact that they are still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. It adds a lot of depth, t...more
The more I read of this series, the more I like it. This second installment picks up about six months after the events of Unclean Spirits. Jayné, Aubrey, Ex, and Chogyi Jake have spent that time learning as much as they can about the evil-fighting legacy that Uncle Eric left behind. But a call for help on Eric's old cell phone has the crew jumping out of research mode, into a mission in New Orleans.

A couple of things annoy me about this series.
1/ The pacing is terrible. This book dragged so much that I almost gave up on it a dozen times - and then, about halfway through, it suddenly started to motor. I read the second half in less than a day, and loved it.
2/ The hint-dropping is heavy-handed, and irritating, and intriguing all at once. In both the first volume and this one, we're handed information that the protagonist doesn't know how to interpret - but the reader does, or might. It's at...more

I found with this book I cemented how much I really like these characters. Jayne is doing the best she can in the situation of having your whole world change. After realizing that demons are real in the last book she is now trying to set herself up for success by learning as much as she can about all the bad things that are out there. I found her thoughts of hopping from one house to another, to another to be funny. Eric seems to have left with an unlimited supply of houses and money to boot, wh...more
I read the first book in this series on my honeymoon, and really enjoyed it. The second book isn't quite as good, but was still interesting. It had a lot of voodoo references in it, many of which were mixed-up according to the research I've done on it. Of course, no reference source on Voodoo is totally accurate, and the author built in a lot of artistic license with her world-building, so it worked out just fine. It's set in New Orleans, and addresses Katrina very nicely. I've visited the city...more
Book 2 in a contemporary/urban fantasy where the heroine (Jayne) inherits her uncle's demon-fighting legacy along with enough money to buy a third world country. She also seem to have some really lucky mojo when it comes to fighting demons (riders, per the book's terminology.) In this book, she fights loa in New Orleans, but nothing's quite what it appears.

I still don't like Jayne. While she's somewhat growing into her new profession, and is now the "boss" of the team, her personality is so insecure it makes me crazy. In this book, the team travels to New Orleans to help Karen Black, a former FBI agent defeat another Rider. This book was pretty predictable as I knew who the "bad guy" was almost right away. The story was still good, though, and again I enjoyed the overall premise and the action. If anything, Jayne's character seemed weaker and less...more
If it's even possible, this book is even more action-packed than the first. Jayne is collecting herself, she is sorting through her new inheritance and trying to decide what to do about her late uncle's problem. It isn't long before she's hit with a new problem, there is a serial killer in voodoo land. Jayne and several secondary characters who she is slowly beginning to consider as friends go after the serial killer.

This is the second book in the series and I will say that I enjoyed it more than the first one. Jayne has been traveling all over the world with her 'crew' cataloging and exploring all the properties she inherited from her Uncle. Upon receiving a call from a ex-FBI agent and someone who once worked with her Uncle, she heads to New Orleans to help with a 'Rider'. To prevent chance of spilling any spoilers, I won't speak about the details any further. I will say that the book was very good, and do...more
