I like to have something playing when I sleep. Whether it be a television show, a movie or an audio book, having something that can lull me into dreamland is a necessity for me to fall asleep. This week, I've put on the audio book version of this book. David Suchet is one of my favorite readers of Poirot stories, so that was a huge draw for me to have it for my bedtime listening.

[Note: Poirot Investigates contains 14 stories, not 11, and my copy was read by me, not by David Suchet! However, this seems to be the only edition in Goodreads, so it will do.]
Had Dame Agatha's publishers consulted me (ha!) I would have suggested they title this collection after the last story it contains, "The Chocolate Box." This book is a compilation of 11 shorts detective story of Hercule Poirot. This is the first time I read Poirot's case. He is arrogant, but very brilliant.
The story is brought in type of detective book and it means that the author will cover up the detective analysis until almost the end of story. And then in just only 2 last page every truth is told.

This book is now one of my favorites from Agatha Christie. I really liked the way the book was set up. It is about these investigators solving mysteries, but there is about 30 separate mysteries in the book. I really like this because you can never really get bored, and if you don't find on mystery particularly interesting, you only have about two pages to go until your next mystery! Another reason that I really like it is because it gives me a lot of chances to act like an investigator and gues...more
Meh. I was really quite surprised to find that I did not enjoy these stories one bit. For some reason Poirot just does not work for me in short story form. Christie leaves something to be desired in these vignettes. They are of course authentic Poirot and i believe him in the situations presented, but the charm usually found in her novels is lacking here. There are fewer moments where you find yourself in awe of Poirot, perhaps because we as readers are never offered the opportunity to play dete...more
POIROT IO TI ADORO! :)

Poirot in short story format is curiously unsatisfying. The plots and the twists are perfectly decent but since Christie's book's aren't generally epics anyway these stories just seem to lack the characterisation and the eventfulness of her books.
There are a couple of complete duds here (The Veiled Lady was awful in my ever so humble opinion) and a couple of absolute gems (I liked The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim best: a good twist that wouldn't have been sustainable in a longer work)...more

I re-read this book for the Agatha Christie Perpetual Challenge to read all of Dame Agatha's books in publication order. This is a short story collection containing the following stories:

The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor
The Adventure of the Cheap Flat
The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge
The Million Dollar Bond Robbery
The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb
The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan
The Kidnapped Prime Minister

Watching the many episodes of the TV adaptation of Poirot mysteries I was puzzled to see “based on a story by Agatha Christie” in the credits of many of them. I had read all of Agatha Christie’s novels and these stories were definitely not among them.
Now I know where they came from. Poirot Investigated, which I borrowed from the library thinking it was a novel, turns out to be a book of short stories and I hadn’t read it so I was in for a treat. The mystery stories originally appear...more

I don't enjoy Christie's short stories as much as her novels. Too much of the same.
Told by Hastings, these short stories were great. As I read them I wondered if it was because they were short the reader was given a fighting chance to figure out the mystery. Think it had something to do with the fact that there couldn't be too many characters to keep straight, clues were more condensed so recognized right away while reading them and Hastings gives more to the narrative.

All fourteen of the early Poirot short stories in this collection have been beautifully filmed starring David Suchet, and although they may seem slow-moving and terribly old-fashioned, they're also comfortably entertaining. Christie's actual stories are sharper, far darker than the films, with a quite pragmatic attitude towards evil, something many modern readers and filmmakers don't seem to grasp. Life wasn’t always a pretty garden even amongst the wealthy in the early 1920s, and Christie knew ...more
A book of Poirot short stories! In my pre-Christmas reading slump, I needed something to kick-start my interest once more and this certainly helped, but here's the problem... A Poirot short story is never enough. I mean, the mystery is practically over as soon as it has been explained. Most of the stories were fun, but the solution was either supremely obvious or not something one could even attempt to figure out. It made me a little sad. But still, some Poirot is better than no Poirot and...more

Somehow, when I was younger, I received a copy of a book titled Star Over Bethlehem. The author was Agatha Christie Mallowan. At the time, I never read mysteries, so the name did not ring any bells. I loved the stories and poems - they were so well written. Somewhere, I still have the book.

Someone once said that if you only read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, and only read Christie’s short stories, you’d think they were both bad writers. Well, it’s emphatically true of Conan Doyle, and I think it’s at least partly true for Dame Agatha as well.
Christie’s first collection of short stories united eleven Poirot and Hastings tales first published in The Sketch magazine in 1923. This is the first incarnation of Poirot: a respected detective, certainly, but one who struggle...more

This has been probably the quickest read out of the 4 books so far. This was a collection of 14 short stories that revolved around separate cases investigated by Hercule Poirot. From what I was able to discern they take place between The Mysterious Affair at Styles and The Murder on the Links. I'm assuming this because Colonel Hastings relates all the stories and since he appears to still be single this was the only conclusion I could come to. Now I'm sure either Becke or Dulcinea could set me s...more
I'm not too fond of short stories but these were good, with a variety of investigations that included murder, thefts, puzzling situations and the like. Basically, these are the kind of inquiries where Poirot made his money. :)
Suchet's Poirot sounded very different than what I'm used to (maybe this was recorded very early in Suchet's career?) Poirot's accent was very pronounced and he was a lot more affected so I'm really glad Suchet's interpretation is not like that anymore. :)

Possibly the worst Hercule Poirot book in the Christine canon.
Short stories are just not her forte. Some of these are so similar to Sherlock Holmes stories that they are painful to read. Just in general, her talent does not lie in the genre. She needs a book or a booklet to really shine, her strength is exposition of mood and character, unlike, say, Conan Doyle, who had the ability to put you into a story immediately and a friendly, non-assuming way.

When I picked this book up I didn’t realize that it was a compilation of short stories. So I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t a novel. The stories were entertaining though and it was a quick read. Hercule Poirot is one of my favorite Agatha Christie characters. His arrogance about his abilities to solve mysteries is part of what endears him to the reader. I love his moustaches! And in this compilation “the little grey cells” are featured quite a bit! This is a collection of short stories featuring Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's "pear-shaped" Belgian detective. Not all of them are about murders but also robberies, kidnappings, and even locating a missing will.
Each story was very clever and suspenseful. I especially enjoyed "The Kidnapped Prime Minister," "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb," and the "Veiled Lady."

This is a series of short stories featuring Hercule Poirot. What I liked was that every mystery was not a murder...they also included missing persons and robberies. But I always enjoy trying to figure out the mystery for myself, and the short length of each case didn't provide enough time or information to do so. But that's my only complaint.
Christie's short stories are great for when I am in-between books - I read and reread them. This is not my favorite collection - Poirot is his most vain & arrogant (and while that is part of his persona, I prefer the toned-down stories), and I am not particularly fond of Hastings. Poirot treats him much the same as Holmes treats Watson, but Watson has the advantage of being a doctor and he usually holds his own. Hasting tends to come across as a silly, whiny, childish man.
I'd read most of these short stories before, but this was an enjoyable little audiobook - with the notable exception that the narrator, David Sucet, who plays Poirot quite well in the miniseries, has THE WORST American accent ever. It was painful. Even New York debutantes sounded like cartoon Texans with head colds.
I started rereading this because I didn't remember that it was short stories, and finished because I'm a completist, but this sort of short fiction does very little for me. Nifty puzzles without enough people behind them don't stick; I could probably read the book a dozen times and never remember it afterwards.

Recommends it for:
Die-hard Agatha Christie fans; Lovers of short mysteries
I will admit, I'm just not as fond of Christie's short stories as I am her novels. This collection was just a tad below average as far as her short stories go. I was not that engaged by them and so reading the book was a little tedious. Ten days for me to finish an Agatha Christie book is a long time. I was so unenthralled with the book that I really don't have anything else to say about it!
Poirot comes across as a poor-man's Sherlock Holmes when he's in short story form, with his clear Watson-equivalent (except more useless) surgically attached to him for the entirety of the book. Which is okay, I suppose, given I've already read all the Sherlock Holmes stories ...
This is a series of short mystery stories. I liked it because it reminded me of Sherlock Holmes, although the voice of the story, unlike in Sherlock Holmes' Dr. Watson, is not constantly berated by his employer(?). I have enjoyed most of the Agatha Christie books I have read.
Somehow I did not like this book. This book is a collection of 11 short stories of Poirot's investigation. But these stories offer nothing. Im so disappointed that all the stories are very ordinary. I think Agatha Christie was a much better novel writer. Short stories were not her forte.

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.
Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K., as the youngest of three. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880–1929), called Monty, ten years older than Agatha.
