Nowe wydanie niezwykłej opowieści o początkach i dziejach chirurgii.

Recommends it for: people interested in knowing more about the history of surgery.

I'm glad I read this book while I'm at college, because I don't know that I could ever find it except at a university library. Thorwald makes a fictional character of his grandfather, who lived during this century of several surgical breakthroughs. Because of the narrative format, the book reads a little less like a history and moves a bit more quickly.

The story takes place in the 19th century. Thorwald begins by talking about three different types of surgery done before the discovery of anesthe

I read THE CENTURY OF THE SURGEON sometime in 1966
and was forever possessed, I now realise.

Now I am ADDICTED
to Jurgen
to medical stories
to medical history
to wanting MORE.

Much much later I found THE TRIUMPH OF SURGERY.
It too takes the fictional character Hartmann,
a young doctor,
whose life becomes
meeting the initiators of
and following
the medical breakthroughs of surgery...
anaesthesia, caesarean section, appendicitis
It is wonderfully researched.

MORE LATER....

I NEED IT ON MY BOOKSHELF.

Can you say fascinating loud enough? Based on author's grandfather's memoirs we can walk step by step with surgeons and experience with them the discoveries which changed medicine.

Personally I happened to read this book shortly after visiting Hunterian Museum in London, which made a huge impression on me given that's partially my field of work. The exhibition still fresh in my memory mixed with this book made me read rose-cheeked. Brilliant.

This book serves the reader with well presented history of medicine in times of its great progress. Numerous cases and stories are arranged by the author in an entertaining way, making the reader intrigued about the progress of situation, wanting to know the outcome of each situation.

A good reading not only for those interested in the history of medicine or surgery - even if one is not really interested in those, he/she may become by reading it.
