When the Imperial prison barge Purge–temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves–breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half...more

like an unconcerned lover, meeting you for a “nooner”, Death Troopers is quick and dirty. it doesnt ask you how you are doing or if you are getting close. when it is finished, it rolls out of bed and leaves you staring, asking “what exactly just happened”. you feel a little dirty, then you shower and get back to work. in the end, it is still a nooner, so who can scoff at that? not i.

a little background info to explain the above..

as a kid, i was an avid book reader. you put it...more

This was like the movie "I Am Legend" if it were in space. The only thing I didnt like about this book was that it seemed like this book wasn't originally written as a star wars novel but then later various references and characters were added in so that it could be labeled as a Star Wars novel. The plot was lacking in detaials- especially character development and information on why the situation on the star destroyer occurred. a back story or two would have been nice. i was tempted ...more

This was a very good and original story for the expanded Star Wars universe. Joe Schreiber writes a very convincing horror story set in a time just before Episode IV. And considering the amounts of blood that gets sprayed around in this book, I doubt a movie or TV version would get anything but an R rating. Though I am not personally afraid of zombies, this book did remind me of the necromorphs from the great video game, "Dead Space," and I must tip my hat to Schreiber for conjuring up...more

I read Horror. I read StarWars. I like zombies.
What more could I ask for?
NOT THIS.
*ahem*
Let me lay it out. The plot could be anything, be it aliens, zombies, whatever. It doesn't feel very StarWars to begin with. Yes, Han is there, and no, that's not a spoiler. Sadly, that's actually a saving grace, as without him and Chewie, this book would have been even more dreadful and would have gotten a one star rating.

This book is full of things that happen as a coinc...more

I see a lot of reviews for this book where the reviewer says either "I don't like Star Wars" or "I don't like horror". I love both, and am therefore the ultimate reviewer of this book.

There were some really good points to this book. The ship's doctor's experience working on an Imperial prison barge is about as politically deep as the Star Wars universe gets at its best, providing an introduction to critiques of the prison industrial complex. While it's not like r...more

Death Troopers marks my return to the Star Wars genre after hiatus that has now spanned several years. A return I would not have made had I not recieved the book as a brithday present. To my delight, I find myself happy to have revisited that galaxy far, far away.
The most striking thing about the book is the cover. A bloody battered stormtrooper helmet bloodied, cracked and hanging by a hook thru one of the lenses from a chain. Immeditaly one can see this is not your typical Star Wars ...more

I don't usually travel into the world of the Star Wars extended universe. But let's face it, with that cover and the promise of Star Wars meets zombies, who can resist. I certainly couldn't and I'm glad I took the plunge. It was a fairly short read and I finished much faster than I expected, mostly because the back of the book contains a few chapters from other stories. Still, I didn't feel short changed at all. It is pretty much a zombie film in space. With a few references removed and specific...more

If you love zombies, you’ll like this book.

If you love Star Wars, you’ll really like this book.

And if your two favourite things in the entire world happen to be zombies AND Star Wars, you’ll probably have an orgasm before you finish reading the first chapter.

I was originally drawn to this book by the cover, and by the fact that I needed an audio book to listen to on a long drive, and this filled my three criteria: it was unabridged, around 6 hours in length, ...more

I am not a Star Wars fan. I enjoy the original trilogy films, but beyond that, I have no interest. So why would I read a Star Wars book and expect to enjoy it? A couple of reasons. First, I like to try different genre stuff. Maybe I'm missing something. Zombie Storm Troopers? That's kinda hard to resist. Also, I heard an interview with Joe Schreiber, and he seems like a good egg. So why not give it try?

Mr. Schreiber is a competent writer. There were no glaring mistakes or serious plot ...more

Well, well, well. Zombies+Star Wars. Some may say it spells disaster, but it was pretty legit. This is definitely no epic tale of doom, but Joe Schreiber gets the job done.

Schreiber uses a simplistic zombie formula: the virus. As zombie lovers know, zombies are usually created by spells(people waking the undead who suddenly develop a thirst for brains or voodoo), or virus(contagious through bite etc.). The rage virus is kind of a cheater zombie, but Schreiber uses the classic. It's a...more

This is a very easy read even for someone who is not entirely familiar with the Star Wars universe (it helps if you have the basic background given in the movies). Upon first reading the book's jacket the plot sounded similar to the episode "Bushwhacked" from the tv series 'Firefly', which is what initially caught my attention. The story moves quickly and makes the book hard to put down. The characters were interesting and well written. I would have definitely given it 5 stars except f...more

I really wanted this book to be filled with win. Star Wars plus Zombies! How could that be bad? Well, it’s not bad. That’s not exactly the ringing endorsement anybody really wants though, is it?

First problem is that I’m genuinely not a fan of the horror genre. I like the occasional horror movie but I skip all the torture porn, green filter wannabe ghost scary, splatter fest 30 year old reboot give me your money for something you’ve seen before crap. IF it’s good I’m very into it, but...more

This book takes a fun concept---zombies + Star Wars---and fails to deliver on its promise. The plot itself is a fairly standard horror/zombie story that could have taken place anywhere, and the Star Wars details are simply layered over the top. The structure of the plot is well done, but there are some serious problems with the book as a whole.

The inclusion of two characters famous from the movies [I won't mention their names, as to not spoil it:] was rather pointless, especially sin...more

Star Wars: Death Troopers, by Joe Schreiber

I believe I saw "Death Troopers" advertised as the first Star Wars horror novel. Although I am not a horror fan, I am an avid Star Wars fan so I had to read it. My first impression came about 100 pages into the novel: it's just a horror story with some Star Wars dressing.

That aside, it's an okay horror story, but it seems very typical. Abandoned ship, check. Mysterious virus, check. Zombies, check. Add some Star Wars e...more

Star Wars: Death Troopers is ostensibly the franchise's first official foray into horror. Those who have read the books with Callista in them, or certain books in the NJO series (embrace the pain), will beg to differ. Nevertheless, this book contains zombies!!! and lots of gore!!! but wasn't the most substantial thing. At right around 250 pages, it was a ridiculously fast read - I sat down and read it in an afternoon, and was left thinking I could have spent my birthday money on something el...more

Star Wars and Zombies - great combination, great premise for a novel? Death Troopers is unabashedly a gimmick novel, and it suffers from serious predictability on that point. And the Star Wars aspect doesn't quite come off - the story is the expected zombie story only loosely grounded in the GFFA. One grasping connection is made with familiar lore through the unnecessary and contra-indicated inclusion of Han and Chewie, and the much more interesting potential connection - how the creation of ...more

This was just begging for a 3.5 star review (better than mediocre, but not super-great), but as I flipped through the final pages and came upon the preview for "Omen" I was reminded what a real mediocre Star Wars novel looks like, and in comparison, "Death Troopers" doesn't look half bad.

It definitely had a few things to overcome, but the good overshadows the bad such that I'm honestly having trouble remembering anything I didn't like about it. At first I was wor...more

I was quite intrigued when I first heard about the STAR WARS: Death Troopers novel. Actually, I believe I was open mouthed and awe struck. The introduction of zombies into the STAR WARS universe was unusual, but I grew instantly keen on the idea as soon as I learned of it.

The book is only around 240 pages and the pages turn very quickly. Partially because the chapters are short and action-filled, but also partially because the plot has you reading quickly to see what happens.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
Predictable opening I guess but I just had to go there.
Even though I love the Star Wars movies I had never crossed paths with a Star Wars novel before. I had been meaning to for a long, long time but there was always something else that took preference. Well, I finally shoved all other books aside and made time for Death Troopers.
Do you like zombies? Do you like Star Wars? Then, in theory at least, you would love Death Troopers as it's e...more

My almost 13-year old son read this in one day, had a nightmare that night, and then insisted that I read it as well. I admit, I was intrigued by the concept and the cover art since it came out. After reading it over the course of about 3 days, I realize the cover art and the concept remain the best things about this book.

Death Troopers came out in 2009, so I'm not going to be revealing anything major here to the hardcore Star Wars fans, but still, here's a SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! If...more

I think if I was a horror fan I might have found this book more enjoyable. It was probably a great horror novel -- I don't really know. It wasn't a great Star Wars novel but it wasn't the even close to the worst one I've read yet so...

Two things...

First, if the prison barge or the Star Destroyer, either one, had happened to have a supply of bacta in their medical facility -- as every medical facility in Star Wars has, the stuff is cheap as bandaids and cures EVERYTHING --...more

Zombies and Star Wars what a great combination. At least it could have been one of the greatest combinations ever. Death Troopers starts slow and ends fast. The build up of characters and the situation that is about to happen build up for to long before they have to deal with the zombies. When the zombies finally arrive they book ends to quickly. There's not enough tension to keep the book moving.

The best part of Death Troopers is you get to experience a little time with crazy z...more

The old adage says you should never judge a book by its cover.

Maybe we should update it to say that we should never judge a book by its cover or its Internet marketing campaign.

Images of the cover for this "Star Wars" book began to slip out months ago along with the tease of stormtroopers plus zombies. Based on that alone, the novel had to be worth reading, right?

Yes and no.

As a standalone novel in the "Star Wars" universe, the...more

Recommends it for: Star Wars fans, zombie tales fans
A curious idea: zombies and Star Wars. The SW franchise pretty much has the skill to grab whatever genre may be popular at the time and make a Star Wars tale out of it. That's what all those Republic Commando stories were, for instance; they were off the fact that a while back all those squad-based combat video games were popular. The zombie idea is not a bad one, but it is not great either. It's basically nice entertainment for a while. The novel uses the bioweapon/virus angle (think things lik...more

I had read numerous reviews pillorying this novel for not being close enough to the Star Wars universe, or for not having a convincing villain, or for just being sort of sick. I have to confess, I picked up this novel a year ago. Read a couple pages, put it away and just picked it up again to read in a waiting room. This probably wasn't fair to this novel, since waiting rooms make me cranky and hyper-critical.

For me, the biggest "complaint" about the novel would be the gore...more
