I thought this was exquisite! The story is beautiful and beautifully told and the artwork is sumptuous. I truly felt transported while I experienced this thoughtful and heart-ful celebration of love.
Love cannot live without trust...
The love story of Cupid and Psyche has always been one of my very favorite myths. So, I was delighted to find this wonderful story done full justice here at the hands of this talented mother/daughter team. I really can't find a thing to complain about so this book gets a rare 5 stars from me! I thought the retelling by M. Charlotte Craft was excellent - both vivid and succinct at the same time - no easy task! And the illustrations - wow! Kinuko Craft's work somet...more

Another fantastic book by the Craft duo!
I did not know the story of Cupid and Psyche prior to reading this, and thus my enjoyment of the story was enhanced. I was pleasantly surprised by the detail of this book and the overall goodness of it. There were a few points that I felt took away, just a bit, from the overall "perfect-ness" of our protagonists:
*Cupid was obviously a mischief maker
*Why did Psyche believe her sisters (though, I felt Craft managed this motive well what with the terrible pro...more

Psyche, though mortal, is argued to be more beautiful than Venus. Venus is very unsettled by the news and sends her son, Cupid, to cause Psyche to fall in love with an ogre of a man. While on his mission Cupid pricks himself with his own arrow and falls madly in love with Psyche. He wisps her away to a magically wonderful life, the only catch is the Psyche may never know who he is. Though trials take place and Psyche must fight to prove her love, the couple cannot be separated. Psyche ends up be...more
Psyche is very beautiful, but in order to conquer love she must go through many obstacles including Venus herself.
I think one of the biggest and most important things about this book is the illustrations. Cupid and Psyche has very elegant illustrations, borders, and font. They are covered with jewels, rubies, castles, vines, flowers, and statues; all of which are appropriate for this royal tale. This fairytale is full of suspense while Psyche is on her journey to find out who she is destined to fall in love with. Then there is more suspense when Psyche is forced to complete three tasks or never see Cupid again. This love story between Cupid and Psyche could be used in a middle school classroom as...more

I thought this was a cute book, and it was a fun story to read. I loved the illustrations in this book, they were very pretty, colorful, and detailed. I did not like how throughout most of this book, it was mainly about beauty, and jealousy. When I just read this story it was fun to read and a cute story but when I actually thought about it, most of the story was about how Psyche was so beautiful that the men loved her, and the women were jealous. I did not like that, I like stories that have a...more
The illustrations in this book were breathtaking. The detail in each page was so intricate that I found myself focusing so much on them that I would forget the words that I had just read on the page. The style of the illustrator matches so well with the theme and storyline of the book that the final product is one of cohesiveness and authenticity. The illustrations were done with oils and watercolors. This medium gives a richness to each of the pages that adds to the regal style of the book.
Craft's illustrations are truly exquisite! Rather than attempt to adapt to Greek artisitic conventions she uses Grecian clothing and hair styles to give the appropriate feel. The setting is more influenced by late medieval and early Renaissance landscapes and floral decoration. One beautiful full-page plate of a mourning Psyche reflected in a lily pond is strongly reminiscent of Waterhouse's paintings.

Where there is love there is heartache..
Today, Cupid is known as a symbol of Valentine’s Day. The myth contends that when one is struck by Cupid’s arrow, that person will fall in love with the next person he sees. But Cupid wasn’t always a winged cherub. He once was a handsome , pierced by his own arrow and doomed to love the beautiful Psyche.

I really enjoy reading this book. It tells a story of a human princess Psyche who is said to be more beautiful than the Goddess Venus. The tale tells of Cupid and Psyche falling in love, being torn apart and fighting outside forces to get back together. It talks of jealousy, revenge, love, hope, and a happy ending.
The god of love Cupid accidentally falls in love with a mortal named Psyche.
This book has incredibly beautiful and detailed illustrations. The story is also told wonderfully. Interestingly, the book mixes characters from Greek and Roman mythology. Cupid is a Roman god (his equivalent is Eros in Greek mythology) and Psyche is a Greek mortal who later becomes a goddess. This is traditionally a Greek tale, so it is possible that the storyteller/author used the name Cupid, rather than Eros, because...more

Breathtaking, intricate illustrations accompany this simple retelling of the Roman myth of Cupid and Psyche. The story is short but it has all the necessary pieces to the story and tells it well. If you like picture books and/or myths, you will enjoy this picture book.

Charlotte Craft studied comparative literature at Columbia University in New York. After graduating, she traveled to Japan, where she worked as an interpreter and photographer. She now lives in Scotland with her family. The New York Times complimented her first book, Cupid and Psyche, for its “clear, simple text” and noted that the book a “excels in conveying the mythology.”
