<default_description>From Missouri to New York and back again, this recounting of an amazing journey chronicles the road trip of a former president and his wife and their amusing, failed attempts to keep a low profile. Diners, bellhops, and cabbies shouted out “Hiya, Harry!” whenever they recognized the former president, and, out for his daily constitutional on the streets of New York, Harry even stumbled into the sidewalk shot of the newly launched Today show. Along the way there are brief detours into relevant topics, such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the development of the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By the end of the 2,500-mile journey, readers will have a new and heartfelt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president.</default_description>

I thought this book was absolutely delightful. I learned so much and really came to love Truman. There was one part that really bothered me in the author's tangent on the KKK - so be warned if you read it, you may want to skip that little section if you're easily disturbed like I am.
I heard an interview with the author and figured it might be a good story. Interestingly, not much happens on their drive. What is revealed is a bit of history along the way. The author effectively use events or objects or people they encounter as a jumping off point to tell a grander story about...more...

Enjoyable account of a road trip Harry & Bess Truman took 6 months after Truman left office, from Missouri to Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. The author hangs a lot of fun stories on the thin skeleton and paints a vivid picture of the Trumans. Slight, but fun, and shows how many ways the cou...more...

I found this to be a delightful little book. I was among the 78% who disapproved of Truman when he left office. Not too many years later, I changed my mind. He was the last President to have come from humble beginnings and never changed. The book brings this out very clearly. A great little book abo...more...

Surprisingly enjoyable. In fact, I was disappointed when it ended. I think it's partly because it describes a time that was, for most Americans, much more innocent than today.
