The book was okay. It could have been much better. Here are some reasons why I didn't particularly like it:
1. There are too many characters in the book who add absolutely nothing to the story. This makes things confusing and watered-down for the reader. Think: multiple angels, "dark" creatures, human-like beings, and even humans. Some of them just come out of nowhere too. I know that it's the "in" thing in paranormal fiction to create entire worlds that make up a More...

A Mermaid's Ransom by Joey W. Hill
Paranormal Romance- Dec 1, 2009
4 ½ stars
Joey Hill has out done herself with the third installment in her mermaid series. This daring book explores the dark side of human nature. What is really evil?

There is a scene in this book that makes it a 5 star for me. Dante is what made this book great, I wanted to see his soul, the bad sides of him and all the hurt. I wished there was more of it in the book. Alexis is great I love when a female character does something I would do like hang on tight and not let Dante go.Dante a vampire that never really filled out his dominant nature still manages to get Alexis to submit and third marks her. She then collars him which was shocking to me but I loved

Hmmmm.....
I don't want this 3 star rating to reflect upon Hill's writing in any way. It is, as always, beautiful. I just didn't like the story as much as the previous 2 in this series. Not that it wasn't interesting, but that it just seemed forced, in my opinion.
This story focuses on Lex, Jonah and Anna's daughter, and Dante, a dark one/vampire spawn that we met in book 2. He's been trying to free himself from the dark one world for 20 years. He's lived a life of c More...

I have to say that while I appreciated the author's ability to make me wanting to keep turning the pages, to see how this couple turned out and evolved, some of the rough, non-consensual sex scenes were just too disturbing for me. This only happened once or twice in the novel, but it was enough for me to feel like I was rooting against the girl's love interest rather than rooting for them to stay together. It just made me dislike him a lot.

If someone is looking to read about a dark character who struggles to find the light this is the read for you. For me, the darkness in Dante was hard to overcome. At times he seemed reedemable but at other times I had my doubts. There were times his actions were so dark it was hard to see him as a hero. There were moments when he would protect Alexis but the other moments of darkness overshadowed this for me.
Having stated this however, Dante was a product of his environment. Growing More...

I wish I could rate this book higher than 5 stars, it is so damn good. Joey Hill is one awesome writer and story teller. I absolutely loved this series and highly recommend to anyone who loves books that are highly emotionally charged. I cried reading this one and I normally don't cry when I read, so that just goes to show how much this one moved me. I loved, loved, loved Dante and Lex. I loved Jonah and Anna in the first book of the series and cried when I was reading it. Mina and David's story

An entertaining read, I really do have to applaud the author for her ability in creating different plots for each book in the serie. Well, the grand theme is the same for the three of them, but there are enough difference in the story not to get bored.
I've just realize that this is actually a love story between a psychiater and her big bad patient..... Reading Hickory Dickory Dock: A Hercule Poirot Mystery opened my eyes about it... More...

Wow, I loved this third installment in Joey Hill's Mermaid series!! It is, however, different from the previous two and I'll get into why. The setting is twenty years from the previous two books, when the daughter of the angel, Jonah, and the mermaid, Anne, is 21 years old. She is a merangel, but prefers to live much of her time in the human world, having made a close human friend, Claire, and working as a volunteer in an aquarium for injured sea animals. She is ransomed by the half vampire,

As long as the authors name is Joey hill I know I am in for a treat. The Mermaid series was my first intro to Joey Hill's writing. I have yet to find a story of hers that is less than fabo! This book maintains that record.
Dante is a scary motherhubbard. He is as rare a being as Mina's dark spawn mermaid witch character. Born in hell, Dante is a dark spawn vampire who can't leave hell until someone says his real name. We also have Alexis who is a sweet innocent angelic baby girl who More...

Umm I'm not sure I get this book.
The first in the series features a heroine that's much the same (Alexis's mother in fact), lacking in self-worth and focussed on the man. Whereas Anna with her curse and Jonah's rebellion against her worthlessness worked, Alexis's tale doesn't. Especially after Mina's story, which was so strong.
In the end they found redemption, but these two didn't. Dante bound Alexis to him using his vampire magic. Love? Not so much.

I am not sure what I can say about this book that I haven’t already said about most of Joey W. Hill’s work. She is one of my favorite authors and each book is unique and precious. Each work is a look into the human soul. This book is certainly no different. Ms. Hill has written a number of books about forgiveness and redemption, of light over coming darkness, of good triumphing over evil. This book is all of that and more. In the beginning of the story Dante isn’t that likable. He is a pr

A MERMAID'S RANSOM is not an easy read by any means but it is perhaps the lightest of the three series installments in Joey W. Hill's Daughters of Arianne Series. I don't mean that it's light in tone because that's certainly not the case, instead, the lightness I'm describing can be contributed entirely to the heroine, Alexis. She is perhaps the most human of all the series characters and her sarcastic wit isn't acerbic but funny and comforting and therefore she becomes a much needed breath of r

I was disappointed in this installment of the Daughters of Arianne series. A Mermaid's Kiss was beyond excellent. A Witch's Beauty was a darkly erotic romance. But this one is just too dark for my taste. Half-vampire, half-Dark One (demon spawn) Dante is overly violent and a brute. As a line in the book claims "Dante is held by a dark madness and does harm without intent." I do understand that his environment spawned him but as a romance hero he was a bit much. I was seriously up

I really like this one just as much as the first book with Anna and Jonah. Joey Hill makes the characters in her books real even though the stories are fantasy based. The only con I had was that she brought Lady Lyssa and Jacob into this story. I was hoping that even though Dante was a vampire she would bring some one else into the mix to help Dante with his traits as a vampire. Like these characters live in a different world from her vampire series. But all-in-all it is a great read for me.

I just can't believe how silly I was! I thought this was the first book of the series and I read it without realizing it right until the end. L.A.M.E. of me, lol. The good thing is you can definitely read this book as a stand alone, no need to read the rest of them before this one. As a rule I never have done this, I ALWAYS read series in order, this was an exception that should have never happened.

Well I am half way through the book and I am having a hard time getting past the fact that in A Witches Beauty Dante was portrayed as a feral adult, who spoke as though he was an imbecile. Granted 20 years have passed since AWB, which may allow for him to become and educated man, but there are still inconsistencies. For instance, in this book Dante became educated because when he killed his mother, she gave her soul to him. He was a teenager when that took place and in AWB he was an adult whe

I'm reading this on the recommendation of a some knitting friends who found the first book in the series hilarious. Couldn't find the first or second book at the bookstore, so I'm reading this one. So far it's very foo foo, like I expected it to be. I need some lighter reading lately.

This book was unputdownable.
You will find in some of the reviews a rape scene is mention. As awful as that sounds, when you read the book and you start to understand Dante's (Alpha male) surroundings and upbringing and his mentality you will understand this particular scene. I liked the raw emotional complexities of this book.
Highly recommend.

It was a little hard to get into the story. I found the leading female character a little irritating, and the male no better. Though I would read it again, I wouldn't say it is a must read.

Dante - how can I not love this name and this screwed over anti-hero? I do love anti-heroes. This third installment is not a repeat of the previous two and can actually stand by itself if need be. The main tying thread amongst these books is the balance of good and evil - light and dark. It's the eternal struggle to answer these questions that humans ponder since the beginning of time.

After the 2nd book in this series - was not sure if I was going to read this one(enjoyed 1, but 2 not so much). So glad I did, I really liked it. This is my favorite out of the series.

WOW! This was delicious. Very dark and dangerous. Though every time Clara walked into the scene I laughed my butt off. She was shining light in such a complicated read. Each book so far has been exquisite and Joey W. Hill's writing is beyond anything. There does seem to be another hook-up hint. I really hope to see this continue. A fantastic series and highly, extremely erotic! This wasn't just hot, it was smokin!

A lot more sexually graphic than I expected... especially with the use of words. I really liked the story as a whole though.
