This book didn't work in several ways.

First, the story development as a "whodunit" was a bit too transparent to work. Hints in the development of the plot gave the conclusion away. There were no twists and turns developed other than the main two characters' own errant musings. So while I as the reader could guess the outcome, the main characters' seemed confused. I wasn't trying to work out possible solutions to a good mystery caper. I was questioning the characters-as-sleuths' intelligence.

This is a fantasy tale set in grimy and dark town called Haven. How and Fisher are a husband and wife, and partners on the city guard. This book is basically about husband and wife cops in a fantasy setting, and was quite entertaining. This is a first book in a series devoted to them, and I will definitely be tracking down the next one post haste.

This story finds Hawk & Fisher tackling a locked room murder mystery with a touch of "Ten Little Indians" thrown in for good measure. It was quite...more

My gods this was the longest game of clue that I've ever read about, and

it kept me entertained. I liked the main characters. Even though much of the book takes place in one house, Green made the settings seem so much larger. I really look forward to reading more adventures with Hawk and Fisher outside.

I had no idea really what this was about going into it. Just that it was a fantasy story by the author of the Nightside and Secret Histories series. Turns out this book is about a husband and wife crime-solving, bad guy busting, vampire staking, law enforcement duo. It's basically COPS, filmed written on location on the streets of Haven. A shithole of a city in the heart of this fantasy world.

We start with a vampire hunt which is then followed by a whodunit murder mystery where the suspects are...more

Hawk and Fisher are a hard-as-nails married couple in the Guard (aka police). This series is a mystery about the murderer of a politician during a private dinner. In retrospect, it was kind of Clue-esque. I definitely love the Hawk and Fisher characters. I kind of like it because I can actually unravel the mystery with them, unlike most books where the mystery is suddenly solved at the end. I have a sneaking suspicion that they are the Prince and Princess from his novel Blue Moon Rising.

This one surprised me: from the jacket illustration and copy I was expecting something along the lines of Conan or Thieve's World, but it's an Agatha Christie locked-room mystery. It's done well, with enjoyable plot twists and a pair of likeable detectives.

Perfectly predictable, with eye-crossingly stupid plot points. I'm reading another by this author, Drinking Midnight Wine, which seems, thus far, to be more tightly written. Maybe Hawk & Fisher is an anomaly.

It's always nice to read some more of one of my favorite genres, the plight of the lowly guard in a fantasy setting. This also happens to be quite a good example of the genre.

Kind of a cop story set in a fantasy world with a male and female partners. This one was pretty interesting and certainly is a pretty good idea for a series.

I was reading a sword and sorcery book when it suddenly turned into an Agatha Christie mystery... but with more blood and gore.

I reread this tonight to get a fresh view on this book. First, let me explain that I am not a big fan of fantasy books. I picked this book up soley because it was written by Simon R Green...and I am glad I did. This is an old fashioned who-dunit mystery. Lock a bunch of people in a house and when people start start dying, figure out who did it. A great story! Green manages to make an engaging mystery that comes full circle. Oustanding!

Set primarily within one location (a house) over the course of one night, this book - for me,at least - is the very definition of a 2-star rating.

Basically a swords and sorcery whodunnit, this is never going to win any awards for either storytelling or originality: I found the denoument to be rather obvious, for instance.

This book was like reading a mystery or playing clue, with supernatural beings thown in to make it really fun. I liked it.

Simon Richard Green is a British science fiction and fantasy-author. He holds a degree in Modern English and American Literature from the University of Leicester. His first publication was in 1979.

His Deathstalker series is partly a parody of the usual space-opera of the 1950s, told with sovereign disregard of the rules of probability, while being at the same time extremely bloodthirsty.
