On her birthday, Eva got a box! A special box that she jumped into and became a magician. Her first trick was to create a pet called Monty, who turns out to be an enormous polar bear. Then she pulled rabbits out of hats. Lots of rabbits. She went on to make food, bring in musicians, and have a big party. And in the end, she clicked her fingers and made everything disappear. Almost everything.

This book could go well in either toddler or preschool. But as my toddler is more of an infant, I think I'll try this with the preschool and work it in as using imagination. It's fun and I like the ending. I like the simplicity of colors in the pictures, as well as the illustrations themselves.

I read this book for a Post Modern book. It is a fun little story about a girl and her magic box. Once she enters the box, her wishes come true and oh the fun she has! But once the magic ends, all her wishes disappear, except her big pet bear Monty! I would use this book in the classroom to teach about wishes and being careful what you wish for. Possibly having the children each create their own verion of the magic box, and what their wishes would be!
The simple black and white drawings are clear, and the splashes of bright color visually highlight the magical (i.e. imaginative) parts of the story. I really liked the rabbits dancing on the musical scale, and the word choice is awesome; there's nothing quite as fun as watching my little one shout out "Ta-da!". There aren't many picture books dealing with magic (not fantasy, but magician-style magic), so this one is definitely a keeper.
I do love a book with a dance party in the middle. And this one celebrates imagination, too. Drawn in inky black ink with intense reds, oranges and blues for accents, it has a light, calm feel, even as layer cakes and bunnies fly through the air and a cheetah doubles on sax.
Will be super nice at storytime, as an individual read-aloud, and for new readers.
Endpaper bonus: bunnies demonstrating dance steps in styles from Latin to square.

"Magic Box" is a children's book. I would recommend this book to children ages three through seven. It would be a great book for a child who is just beginning to read. It is about a little girl (Eva) who climbs in a cardboard box that she gets for her birthday. She becomes a magician and makes all of her dreams come true. I would rate this book a five out of five because children would really enjoy this book.
Parents are always baffled when they buy their child this amazing present only for them the find more excitement in the box. This story personifies that. We are never told what comes in the box, but we get to see the box turn into fantastical things. It only takes a little imagination to turn something simple into something extraordinary.

This is a great little book, about a girl who opens up a magic box on her birthday and all that ensues--would be a great birthday present for a 2-6 year old. Very nice illustrations, with excellent use of color to portray excitement and emotion.
