Chris - So, before Halloween 2010, I started reading through the Sookie Stackhouse books because of my enjoyment of the True Blood TV series.
I have to say that I've enjoyed them quite a bit. The first book is very similar to the first season of True Blood, and there are elements of book 2 and book 3 in season 2 and season 3, but there are many differences.

One of the main differences with the books is that everything is from Sookie's perspective in her narritive, so if she doesn't witness somet...more

Okay, I love this series, and that was totally unexpected for me. I am not usually into romance supernatural horror, so I did not expect this series to be as completely engrossing and captivating as it is. Not only myself, but even my hubby voraciously read through the Sookie series and became very endeared to the characters as well. The comedy, horror, mystery, and romance is perfectly blended together in the stories, rendering it a fascinating horror soap opera. The characters are well rounded...more

Definitely a guilty pleasure, this series. The most ridiculous plots, but so entertaining that I've now read nearly all of them. My favourite scene in the series is when she went to a vampire conference and ended up scooting down the side of a pyramid hotel in a coffin to escape from a bomb blast. And that isn't even the climax of the story! The sex scenes are less cringeworthy as the series goes on, and less time is spent explaining what everyone is wearing, which is a good thing.

I prefer the...more

So I could list all these books separately, but they were so handy in the 8 pack on the kindle. It was so fun not to have to hunt around (read: wait at all) for the next book I have to review them this way.

Now as for the books themselves, I had so much fun reading them, it's like eating the crunchy Cheetos and drinking sugary Coke for my brain with the occasional doughnut. Only I never got sick of it, sometimes I feel like I have to take a break from the eye rolling (thank you Twilight), but I n...more

I feel like I just ate 5 pounds of twinkies and chased them down with potato chips and sweet tea. My stomach hurts, but I'm happy. Yeah, this is junk food. It's chopped full of sugar (sex), salt (hot vampires and werewolves), and preservatives (poorly written summary), and even though you know it's bad for you, you can't stop reading it.

I first got hooked on True Blood, the show. TB is way more polished, classy, blah blah blah. The Sookie books are pure pulp, and yet if there were another one (...more

loved them but the last three are the best
although this athur puts herself in the shoes of Sookie i believe she wishes to be Sookie due to the fact the sex scenes are sometimes strange and yet the 24-28yr old women has traits of a 45 year old women when it comes to cooking ext

Better then the show if u are a fan of the show stick with these books. I read the first book last cause i started reading after season 1 of the show. Start with book one cause there are some differences in the book not man...more

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I also liked it because having watched the first three episodes of the HBO series based on this book, True Blood, I started off where I stopped show wise. Since I knew the characters already, it made reading the book even better and I was so excited about what happened next. The TV series is a little different than the books in that there were some different vamps I had never heard of (from Fangtasia and Crystal) was introduced in this book and the TV...more

What a series! Can you say addictive?
I was a fan of this series from book one, and it gets better with each book.
Sookie is a great lead character, and Bill and Eric are something to read for alone. If you have yet to read book one and are not sure if you should buy the series, I can honestly say, after one book you'll be hooked. You'll be right back at the store for book two. So if you can get a good price on this box set, buy it.
If your worried it's another Twilight phenomenon, it's so not....more

Vampire Porn .. but who cares?!

Ok.. so as a disappointed review says .. it's like Vampire Porn. And it is in parts. And the tv series actually has a lot more that isn't in the book. More characters, more storyline, more sex and more plot. The books are written from Sookie's perspective so that's going to happen. But.. I still love the books. There is a lot more too them than Mills & Boon books and they are well written.
So as for whether it will put you off the tv series. Well I guess that de...more

Blah! Blah! Blah! (And I don't mean that in the vampire sense.) Poorly written. Lame, shallow characters. These books were written solely for the sex scenes. I'll admit I read the first one and started to enjoy it, I saw some potential, and I appreciated the adult departure from Twilight. Then I trudged through the next two, and was sorry I did. I kept waiting for it to get better, and I gave it more than a fair chance. It just go more and more ridiculous as the story when on, and you could tell...more

Finished 'em all in a month! Not the best writing ever, but there's something relaxing about descriptions of a seemingly ordinary person living her daily life (visiting the library, waitressing, housecleaning), especially juxtaposed with fight scenes and hot vampire love. I also like hearing about the small town lifestyle in the deep south. Sookie Stackhouse is a great character, and just when you think the storylines are simple, the male characters seem to represent different aspects of typical...more

I first read these from the Steubenville Ohio Library. I enjoyed them so much I had to buy them. First off understand the first six books have nothing to do with the HBO series True Blood other than names and places. seven and eight have a new writing style and TV show feel to them eight being the worst of it and why I no longer will read Charlaine Harris books.

Now with that out of the way the first six books are very well written with strong imagery, well developed characters and a great story...more

These books have to go at the top of my favorites list,i could not put them down what with such lively exciting characters such as sookie whoom i fell in love with such a sweet not so normal girl with extraordinary talents that finds herself in such unbelievable circustances with the two hottest vampires on the planet. With every book i became totally hooked which only left me desperate to read the next> i completed these books in a week and was devastated at having to wait until may this yea...more

This was a last minute Christmas present from my husband and yes that means I purchased it myself, as he knows what happens when I have more than one book to read! I spent four days and eight novels in Sookie's world and loved ever minute. On the whole some of the plots left me a little cold and the introduction of new characters was a little odd in places, but that suited the Sookie character and her life.

I did enjoy the feeling that in the storytelling the jumble of a real life pulsed through...more

I love the first three books in this series. Finished the third last month. Starting the 4th (Dead to the World) this week. I plan to have the series finished before my kids return to school for another year of great educational learning (August 22, 2011). Thats right 1 month and 4 to 8 books left (I believe) to read in the Sookie Stackhouse Novels.

Charlaine Harris, I wish you the best on all that you do. Keep on writting great books/novels. You are up there with Anne Rice and Stephen King in...more

It was good. I had to read all 8 book in a matter of 2 weeks (I check it out from the library on my Nook). I have a hard time with Sookie not having any closure with her relationships and it actually makes me a little sad. The story line is good, but I guess I'm used to another series when the characters are together, they stay together. I realize that since it's a series now, the author probably won't let that part of her story have closure since it would mean an end to the series also. I may h...more

Scintillating and entertaining, yes, but oh so much more! Explorations of racism? Yep! Discussions on classism? You bet! Secret agenda of defending gay rights? You wouldn't expect it, but it's there! Extended look at feminism in the early 21st Century? You just gotta know that some masters student is earning his or her chops by doing an extended comparison of Sookie Stackhouse and Bella Swan (btw, Sookie totally beats Bella Swan's a#$). This series is really a study of American culture post 9/11...more

I read these books at a time when I was having a hard time focusing on anything. A friend suggested them and it really did the trick. I started reading the first one and just couldn't stop until I was done. Totally fun and sexy and entertaining. The only annoying thing being the authors constant recaps about what happened in the last books. But I get why as that's common to all mystery series because most people just pick one off the shelves rather than read from start to finish. Thanks to Ms. H...more

This series was very addicting to read. With every book I finished I couldn't wait to start the next one! I read all the books before I watched an episode of the TV show... Gotta say, I liked the books better. I just couldn't get into the show at all. I watched the first 3 episodes and couldn't stand to watch any more. I would have given this series 5 stars, but as the series went on it seemed to go a little downhill. Loved the first 4 books... I only finished the series because I wanted to know...more

Although the Sookie Stackhouse novels are more of a guilty pleasure than serious literature, that does not mean they aren't worth reading. The story is fun, fast paced, and humorous. There are flaws, especially with some of the later rehashing of plot points and character attributes that a reader should already know. That being said, it is a great series if you enjoy a good bit of fantastic escapism. Personally, I love that kind of stuff and finished this set in about a week. Growing up in the d...more

I have read the first three: Dead Until Dark, Living Dead In Dallas, and Club Dead. Just started book 4 Dead To The World.

Really liked the first 2 books. Definitely a sort of genre cotton candy for the brain, competently written but meant to be pretty easy. Like the main character and the setting a lot. Reads like a mix of vampire novel, light mystery, and bodice ripper. Only on occasion has an off note. By book four though I am wanting more depth to the character development somehow. Doesn't ha...more

Sometimes my Kindle serves as a wonderful cover for my guilty pleasures. The person next to me at the pool probably thought I was reading Tolstoy. My husband probably thought I was learning volumes from a brilliant parenting book. Actually I was completely engrossed in a steamy mystery involving vampires, werewolves, witches, and an endearing fairy. I read the entire Sookie Stackhouse series cover to cover, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I am happy to not leave behind any physical evidence.

Okay some of these I LOVED and some not. None were bad but I am finding that as the series continues past book 8 I'm not loving it so much. Also I hate to say this but the later books seem to have a few decent errors in them. I'm usually pretty oblivious but the triplets and their names all beginning with C ... pretty sure those changed a couple of times. I do really love the first 5 in the series and will happily re-read again and again. And I sooooo want a were-tiger *giggle* mmmmmmm

Deliciously fun reading! If you're a fan of the show, this is like a True Blood alternate reality: more fairies, more shifters, more Eric, and (in my opinion) a more classy (and more Southern) Sookie. And, if you aren't a fan of the series, this is pure fun! Just the right amount of mystery, scandal, heroism, fang and humor. Not to mention, a whole new perspective on the South and its gothic potential. The only reason my review isn't five stars is: Harris is a fabulous story teller but somewhat...more

I have actually read this entire series, but i'm not about to go through each one individually.

What can you really say about vampire fiction? Its easy, everything-is-on-the-surface reading. Sookie is a very likable character. Quinn is a total creep. Eric is the guy women want to reform. Bill...he falls under creepy too. Toward the end of the series the author is reaching for a plot, but once you're invested, you have to know...I mean, what if it gets REALLY good?

I love these books! I just finished reading a popular vampire series, and a friend of mine recommended for me to read this series. She said it was more geared towards adults and that I would enjoy it.

When I read the first book, I fell in love. Every book after that just kept getting better and better!!! The characters are awesome, the story line is interesting, and its one of those books that you can't seem to put down.

I can't wait for the next one to come out!

I've read them all that have been released up to this date (Jan. 2011). These books are bad. They have very bad things in them. They are nothing but a guilty pleasure...but heavy on the guilt. I wouldn't tell someone to start this series because the story is actually interesting, but all the stuff that comes with it is so not good for anyone. You start though, and want to know what happens to everyone, so you keep reading when really, they should kinda go in the trash.

A great series (if a fluffy, fantastical, easy to read one) about vampires, werewolves and other "supes". This is fictional escapism at its best in my opinion. Oh and I dare you to not fall completely in love with these characters by the end of the series: Sookie, Bill, Eric, Amelia, Jason...they're all great in their own ways. The television show that is based on this series is great too, but still doesn't do these awesome books justice. Second in line on my list of favourite fantasy novels of...more

I read the first book of the series and it was good. Then i read the second book and as other people say in reviews it pretty much turns into a vampire porn or Twilight for grown ups. I don't think i can continue reading it because its so graphic with sexual things. Not a fan of romance novels with drawings of half naked men embracing a scantily clad female o on the cover. Thats what these books are but with vampires and some actions scenes placed throughout.

Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Now she lives in southern Arkansas with her husband, her three children, three dogs, and a duck. The duck stays outside.

Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was wr...more
