News from the Empire
One of the acknowledged masterpieces of Mexican literature, Fernando del Paso's News from the Empire is a powerful and encyclopedic novel of the tragic lives of Maximilian and his wife, Carlota, the short-lived Emperor and Empress of Mexico. Simultaneously intimate and panoramic, the narrative flows from Carlota's fevered memories of her husband's ill-fated empire to the m

This is a huge, dense book, more of a collection of scenes and observations from a panoply of characters than a novel with traditional narrative. This gives you the liberty to dip in, follow your own piqued interest, and go back better informed to get more out your next foray into 19th century Mexico. The Empire of the title is that of Maximilian and Carlota, sent to Mexico in 1862 by European powers at the request of a cadre of Mexican business leaders.

Having loved Fernando del Paso's Palinuro of Mexico beyond love, I saw this on my local bookstore's 'books in translation' bookcase and grabbed it--then put off starting it because it's 1000 pages long... Opened it today and I'm completely SUCKED IN. Starts in 1927 with the crazy Empress Carlotta defining herself as per the royal houses of Europe... just brilliant. I know what I'm going to be doing for the next month or so. But it can't be helped.

This is actually out in English. Can't wait. Del Paso is furiously poetic, logorhheic, dizzyingly inventive. This is about Carlotta and Maximilian. Can't wait.
It's big. It's intimidating. I had to struggle at points to make it through this book, but I did, and it was massively rewarding. Fascinating, distressing, controlled and crude, funny and tragic. It's a big history book that is as respectful to the tragedy of Maximillion and Carlota as it is a satire about the royal families of Europe. Quite beautiful and quite brilliant.
