Konuyla ve mekanla çok uyumlu :)

Finished "Ice" by Linda Howard. First of all, if you name a character Darwin, I am expecting he will be the first to die. Second, if Darwin is coupled with Nikki, I'm thinking you're a Prince fan (Darling Nikki). There was a lot of repetition of phrases, and a lot of times when the phrasing didn't make sense - enough that it was distracting. There were times when I thought the author didn't do her research. The distance between the climax of the story and the end was much too long for ...more

The fact that it's a short story wasn't my favorite. Gabe was interesting as an Army Sargent home on holiday leave sent to fetch Lolly Helton, Girl He Fought With In High School, from the mountain where cell phone reception is spotty and an ice storm is looming.

Lolly surprised me by getting me to like her. I thought she was either going to be an uppity snot or boring and repressed. And while yes, of course, she was mean in high school because she was socially awkward and shy, which ...more

30-year-old daughter of small-town Maine's former mayor is hijacked in her parent's house by 2 meth addicts during a bad ice storm. She is rescued by attractive son of town's police chief who used to tease her when they were kids. The stress from being chased by the villains seemed to draw them closer together emotionally & sexually.

A substandard Howard book. The romance, suspense, plot, & dialogue were very predictable, emotionally non-engaging, & ordinary. The characters esp the vil...more

Linda Howard has steadily been going downhill with her more recent releases. When Ice was first published I chose not to read it because a) I was disappointed in LH as a whole and b) it was really expensive as a hardcover for the size. Recently it became available at my library, however, so I decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised.

Although light on romance, it seemed more of an early Howard novel. The same tension, suspense and drama from her earlier works were here, alo...more

Gabriel McQueen was home for a weekend on leave from the military and his father is the Sheriff of a small town in Maine but the minute Gabriele arrives there is trouble. Gabriel is anxious to get to this mother’s home to see his young son, Sam, but the Sheriff needs him for an important job first. Young Sam lives with Gabriel’s mother after becoming a widower the year before when his wife Marianne died. It’s been tough on both of them.

Enjoyable escape, but it is TOO SHORT. More time for more relationship development would have been nice.

STORY BRIEF:
Gabriel is an army sergeant in the military police, based in North Carolina. He comes home to Maine just before Christmas. His father is sheriff and asks Gabriel to go to the Helton home outside of town. An ice storm is coming, and the sheriff is worried that Lolly may not know about the storm and may be stranded. There is no cell phone service near her home....more

In spite of some poor reviews I read, this wasn't a bad story, but I could understand the aversion people have to paying $22 for what is really the sort of story you'd find as first issued in paperback. Gabriel is just home on leave when his dad, the sheriff, asks him to check on Lorelei to warn her of the impending ice storm. In town to prepare her secluded family home for sale, Lolly is out of cell phone range. The storm hits as Gabriel tries to reach her house and has to abandon his truck and...more

Broadway and television actor Fred Sanders delivers a chilling reading of this story of two people seemingly trapped in a killing ice storm. Of course, the setting is frigid but it's Sanders's professional delivery that takes the story to sub zero heights off suspense.

Mystery maven Linda Howard has delivered a shorter than usual tale with ICE, but it starts off with a hook and keeps you guessing until the last sentence. Gabriel McCain was looking forward to coming home from the serv...more

So, yeah, I finished this book in two hours, If you look at the exact time stamp of when I hit "currently reading" to read, I might be off a few minutes. Ok, where to start. First of all this, to me, is a novella. This is probably one of the shortest books I've read by Linda Howard, for hardback at least. I really enjoyed the suspense because no one writes suspense like my girl Howard. The romance is a little short, but then that's how Linda rolls these days.

My Thoughts:
Wow. I couldn't even sleep before finishing this book, and it's 3 hours before my alarm clock is set to go off, haha. Well, I have a new favorite book! :) There is nothing I didn't like about this novel; a wonderful mix of thrilling suspense and survival with a touch of romance, perfect! The characters were amazing (not to mention I'd love to come across Gabriel McQueen in a dark alley, or anywhere for that matter, haha). They were all perfectly writ...more

To me the ending of this book was rather abrupt, I was definitely expecting more to happen. It turns out it is really only a short story but okay.

Gabrielle McQueen has just arrived home to Maine for Christmas and his father, the local sherrif sends him up the moutain to warn Loralei (Lolly) Helton about a forcasted ice storm and to bring her down from her home up there before the ice storm starts. Gabrielle does not want this errand as he has past issues with Lolly - but all that chan...more

Better than the last one I read - which is typical for a Linda Howard book! I actually read 3/4ths of the book in one night - it had all the action in that chunk. It was GREAT. I actually could NOT put the book down. She really does a great job (and always had) pulling off romantic suspense - she always GETS the suspense just right! I felt like I was in Maine, slipping down the mountain with the main characters! I actually want to go visit Maine now :)

However, after all the action happ...more

The book has a stupid premise so contrived that it is almost painful. Two meth users end up in a remote Maine town looking for a quick money fix. They were going to rob the local grocery store only to spot a woman who "appears" to have money so they stalk her back to the woman's family home. This home conveniently sits atop a mountain which then gets iced in because of a storm.

The sheriff, who's son is conveniently a well-built MP, sends him to the remote house because in this sma...more

I love Linda Howard, but I was very disappoined with the book "Ice".

It's a short story which I generally don't like because there is not a lot of room to develop characterization (which is my favourite thing about a book) and the plotlines are generally very simple. "Ice" fits this descrpition.

I understand that books aren't necessarily supposed to be realistic, but the plot of "Ice" fell short for me. So two meth-addicts decide on a whim that...more

Riveting... I could not put it down. These two characters, beautifully and deeply drawn, have to do battle. They battle armed intruders, mother nature, each other, and their growing feelings for each other. Former schoolyard enemies become lovers ... fifteen years after seeing each other last. It's kind of cute when these two adults fall into the old habit of sniping at each other. This book is more romance and less suspense than I would have guessed. I like that in spite of the plot line,...more

why, o, why did i read this book? I saw it just over 200 pages, so I thought it would be a quick and easy read. Well it was definitely quick and easy. The first 75% of the book I was pretty excited, the plot was pretty good and moved along at a fairly good clip, but then tragedy struck. As with most "romance" novels, the one part that can make or break a book, the author completely bombs the "love" scene, and I use that term very lightly. The last 25% of the book was just...more

I liked this book. The action in this book is fast, takes place in 2 days. Gabriel McQueen has come home to his birthplace to visit his parents, his dad is the town sheriff. A very bad ice storm is headed their way and his dad asks him to go get "Lolly" Helton, a former mayor's daughter, and bring her to town where it will be safer for her to sit out the storm. Gabriel is not too thrilled with this since he and Lolly have a rather angst filled teen past but he agrees. Meanwhile "...more

I don't usually read books that explore romance. I would give this a 3 and a half stars* for 2 reasons. First for the discription of the ice storm. Seecond for having the change in Gabriel's attitude toward Lolly a realistic one. They both recognize the dangers they faced the catalyst and they both realized they needed time to explore the possibility of a reationship. It wisely avoided the typical ending of they got married and lived happily ever after.

I guess I should a...more

Premise of the story: Gabe and a snotty girl from back in high school (Lolli? Yah, I thought so too) get stuck on a mountain in the middle of an ice storm with two unpredictable and homicidal meth heads. BUT, in the midst of fighting for their lives (versus the psycho druggies AND the weather) they manage to find time for some luke warm passion and an everlasting romance...hmmm...isn't real life like that?

I need to give up on Linda Howard. The suspense is mediocre at best and the ...more

At the risk of damning this book with faint praise, this is a good book I have a few problems with. Characters were under-developed, especially the main antagonist. She was really a vile human being without any redeeming features. I think there could have been some capacity to explore her and discover why she was the way she was.
I also found the lack of empathy the protagonists had towards the antagonists a little over the top...almost Jack Reacher-esque (author Lee Child).

This is a quick adventure/romance novel taking place in Maine during an ice storm. Gabe, an army Sgt on leave, comes to see his young son who is with his Grandparents. Gabe's Dad is the Sheriff who asks Gave to go to the summer home to warn the owner of the impending storm. When he gets there (she is a high school classmate he couldn't tolerate back then) He finds her imprisoned in her home by a pair of meth addicts out to rob and rape.

This was the first in a book challenge I set for myself. I chose this one first because it looked action packed and I like books that move.
Well, this book moves forward at a steady pace, and there is a little action, a little suspense, and a little romance. It was short, and I don't feel like I could really dig my heels into the book. The characters were like-able but again I just couldn't get attached. One of the things that bothered me was the lack of description in the main characters. I...more

Definitely not one of my favorites from Howard. This was a shorter book and therefore there was less time to really build up the suspense. The romance felt rushed as did the drama of what was going on. I liked the premise of being stuck in an ice storm while being chased by hyped up druggies but because of the length of the book it affected the entire story.

However, this won't stop me from reading future books by Howard. Overall, I find her a really great author and most of the time I...more

Lolly Helton returns to her hometown to prepare her parent’s house for sale, when a couple of drug using drifters invade the house and hold her hostage. Gabriel McQueen, who grew up at odds with Lolly, drops by at his father’s request to make sure she is prepared for the coming storm. Together they attempt to outwit and evade both the druggies and the storm of the century.

Linda Howard keeps the reader turning pages in this quick read, perhaps made scarier because in today’s world, ...more
