The second book in The Jealousies of a Country Town is set in Alencon after The Old Maid which should be read first. While it does stand on its own, a history of some of the characters is presented in The Old Maid. Victurnien d'Esgrignon is an only son. A pleasant surprise. Most of Balzac's best work has been re-translated recently by Penguin, Oxford, or other publishers; but for this gem, you have to go back to the 1890s and early 1900s when Ellen Marriage and Katharine Prescott Wormeley were the only games in town.
