At Princeton University, a famed geneticist dies inside a biohazard lab. In Rome, a Vatican archaeologist is found dead in St. Peter's Basilica. In Africa, a U.S. senator's son is slain outside a Red Cross camp. The three murders on three continents bear a horrifying connection: all the victims are marked by a Druidic pagan cross burned into their flesh.

Released in 2009, The Doomsday Key is the sixth Sigma Force novel, and is another intriguing, exciting, fascinating adventure. Sigma Force is a secret, blackest of the black ops organization of the United States. They investigate odd and unusual events that potentially may jeopardize the USA and world stability. In The Doomsday Key, Sigma head Painter Crowe, top agent Gray Pierce, and his team are on the trail of a conspiracy to control global population through the food supply. Seemingly unc...more

I liked this book. I'm not a big reader of the cop/special forces/suspense/etc. genre, so I'm not sure how typical this book is, but for me, it had the adventure/quest component, the symbology, and history that I liked in Da Vinci Code, and even threw in a reference to Merlin for kicks.

A special forces team, recovering from a major set-back, split up to figure out why bad guys are killing people and branding them with a symbol known for ecological groups. There's a lot of explanation ...more

As a die-hard Rollins fan, I eagerly grabbed this book within weeks of it's release. The plotline revisited some of my favorite characters, including the mysterious Seichan. I was hoping for a resolution of the Grey/Seichan romance, but I will warn any potential readers that the resolution is a bit of a grey area (drum riff).

The plotline of this entry focuses on an influential owner of a bioengineering company who has plans to "save" the world through controversial means as...more

James Rollins action/adventure thriller novels are always far fetched, though the scientific details always have a basis in fact. This time, in The Doomsday Key, the scientific storyline delves into the areas of genetically modified foods, fungal viruses and super enzymes. The regular cast of characters are there, Gray, Monk, Painter, etc. with the addition of Rachel and Seichan in a new twist. I'm always very keen on the scientific elements and arcane bits of knowledge, and in this, the novel ...more

Car chases, crashes, bombs, and assassinations. Welcome to James Rollins newest book “Doomsday Key”. Although very action packed there lies an interesting twisting plot that makes this book a great read that kept me intrigued to the end. While the plot was very interesting it took a while to get going. The beginning of the book started out slow but slowly gained momentum and led up to a bang. James Rollins continues to impress with his fast paced action and slow mind puzzles that I en...more

He just keeps rolling with the page-turners. If you like Indiana Jones/DaVinci Code/Jurassic Park page turners, this is your guy. His characters are pretty weak, but actually getting better. Male-female relationships are really empty, but heroes don't have time to worry about that kind of silly stuff. Just painful when author tries to work through emotional scenes. He's an adventure story teller, whose stories have the action happening too fast and furious to slow down for introspection. A...more

Rollins hit all the key fears of my life. Global Warming, Over Population, Pollution, Genetic Manipulation gone wild, Honey Bees disappearing, drought, and war. All the same characters are here, Painter Crow the the rest are fighting "The Guild". With a little science and a great imagination Rollins takes us to a place where "The Guild" uses a rich Norwegian man who wants to save the world from self destruction and shows us one solution to the "Population Bomb"

Once again the Sigma Force goes up against the sinister organization known as The Guild.
The book opens with the destruction of an experimental farm in Africa and a massacre of all the staff and refugees in the farm. A member of the staff was the son of a US senator and the Sigma Force was given the task of investigating what happened. Monk Kokkalis, member of the Sigma Force, was about to interview the colleague of the senator's son, when a group of assasins killed the colleague and blew ...more

A Good Summer Read

I've only read a small number of James Rollins' books; but, from my understanding, THE DOOMSDAY KEY is exactly what fans of his will expect and love. It has an easy to read and enjoyable plot involving multiple murders, biotechnology, chemical agents, history, and lore. THE DOOMSDAY KEY is truly an adventure, taking readers from Africa to locations all over Europe, to the Arctic.

I am not familiar with the characters, but I believe they have made appearan...more

more like a 3.5 -- I rounded up
My thanks to the Amazon Vine program through which I received this book.

It's really tough for me to write about books that are out of my comfort zone. I'm not a huge fan of adventure/action thriller type books, and I rarely read them. I'm much more likely to read a mystery, biography, history, work of literary fiction, or to indulge in the guilty pleasure of a horror novel or two here and there. But the fact is, there are only a few authors in t...more

I'll say about this book, what I've said about each of the books in James Rollins "Sigma Force" series: outstanding. He has won me over, and my 19 year old daughter as well. The two of us are fans of the way in which Rollins incorporates true historical and scientific elements into his works of fiction. We also appreciate his 'separating fact from fiction' section, at the back of the book, as well as his suggestions for additional readings on his 'meaty' topics.
These...more

Have you ever finished a book and felt like there was meant to be another chapter? Or is it that there was a chapter too many that makes you think there is more to the book? Either way, this is my second Rollins book and I have felt the same way after both. I'm unsure if this is a deliberate move by Rollins to make me want to read another of his books, or if it is just that I'm somehow unfulfilled by the end of his novels.

Guess I need to read another of his books to find out. Fortunate...more

I read this book in 2 days, because it was wicked hot/humid & I couldn't muster up the energy to move. If I could've done anything else, I would not have finished this novel.

This story is told from SEVEN points of view, which throws off the pacing a number of times. Just when a POV gains momentum, the chapter ends and Rollins switches over to someone else. Rollins tries to tell the story from the multiple villians' POV, but for me it just weakened the tension, rather than winding t...more

Beginning with medieval clerics taking a census for King Edward's Domesday Book and moving into real-life matters such as genetically modified crops and industrial espionage, James Rollins has created an outstanding thriller.

The book opens with the census takers and moves rapidly to what initiallky appear to be four unrelated murders -- except that all four victims have been branded with the same symbol on their foreheads. A friend of one victim passes an artifact on to his niece, w...more

I had forgotten about this series for a while, but when I needed a book for a plane flight, I thought I'd see if there were any more. Sure enough, this one had come out and another is about to follow. One thing I like about this series is that the books are self-contained enough that if I go a few years between books, I don't feel like I'm missing much that's important. As with any book of this ilk, there's all kinds of unbelievable characterisations, convenient epiphanies, etc. But, as I h...more

The Doomsday Key is the latest in the Sigma Force series, although one need not have read any of the earlier books to understand the story, as all pertinent background information on characters and their relationships is presented as they are introduced in this book. Never having read (or, admittedly, heard of) any of the earlier works in the series, I had few expectations informing my reading experience, other than having seen a few diagrams while flipping through my pre-pub copy (I'm a sucker ...more

I finished The Doomsday Key.

James Rollins is just frustrating. How can I survive until summer 2011?
This case was interesting but not the best of the author. At least I think the others were written in a more appellative way.
I have to confess I feel pretty paradoxical about this book. I really liked to know about Saint Malachai and all the things about the Popes and well it is really freaky by the way. I also loved all the things about the Celts and the Domesday Book. ...more

This is the fourth Sigma novel I have read, and, once again, I'm not sure exactly how I should "rate" the book.

On the one hand, there is a lot of obvious literary trickery going on--I believe Rollins keeps a deus ex machina handbook in his pocket while writing--and things that any reasonable reader knows shouldn't happen, happens.

On the other hand Rollins' books are a whole lot of fun; books that I really, really enjoy--I've read four of them, after all--and...more

As usual with one of James Rollins' books, I find out how much I don't know about ancient history (a sad gap in my education) and modern weaponry (a more understandable gap). The action is intense and unrelenting so any unfamiliarity with the characters will be forgotten at the first ambush. 'The Doomsday Key' takes on the shadowy and timely world of research into genetically modified foods and entwines it expertly with a mystery involving saints, crypts, ancient enemies and Merlin. I always won...more

It's always nice to revisit the Sigma Force gang, and this was a solid outing with some pretty cool scientific and historical underpinnings. And while I know that it's practically a requirement for a thriller to have some crazy and over-the-top plot elements, I wish that this series would fight the trend a bit more, as Rollins's work is far more than just mindless fluff, and I hate to see him giving any ammo (pun sort of intended) to those who live to denigrate the genre. In fact, the crazy (and...more

"Rollins' latest Sigma Force book finds Grayson Pierce dealing with both Rachel Verona, an ex-lover as well as the enigmatic Seichan, who attempted to kill him in another book. He can't be sure if Seichan's trustworthy or not, but his team has to investigate why a South African archaeological dig was razed to the ground and a senator's son murdered. The villains are a multinational corporation with designs on controlling the world's food supply as well as Seichan, who hurts Rachel in such a...more

I have read all of James Rollins's books and this, by far, is one of my favorites. There are a few "popular" authors that I follow and Rollins has the most complex story lines and he seems to avoid the pitfall of writing to the lowest common denominator. With that said, this was a very easy read and I was able to get through it after a couple of plane rides and one night! It was hard to put down with the text harkening back to medieval times, plagues, and a very interesting twist on...more

Picked this up off the $6.99 clearance table at B&N while on vacation. First James Rollins book I've read and it won't be my last. I enjoy espionage/intrigue and love when some history is thrown in. Having not read any of the early books I was still able to pick up on the history of the characters without feeling I lost too much of the overall picture. Action, drama, mystery all wound together across continents with a touch of romance/dangerous love/lust. A page turner, The Doomsday Key keeps yo...more

I won this through the Goodreads first-reads program. It sounds like it will be a fun read and I'm looking forward to it. I imagine if I like it, I'll be buying the rest of the Sigma Force series.

Oh my gosh!! Glen Beck said on his FoxNews show that this was the book to read this summer. I had the hardest time having to put it down!!! It's just THAT good! What I love about it, there's an "mystery" to be solved by a secret government agency. But the way it's written, the group investigating has been split into two...and just as one group is moving to the next level of finding out the mystery, it slaps you with a chapter cliffhanger, then heads on over to the other group inve...more

This was my first experience reading a James Rollins book. I found it captivating in the beginning but found myself disinterested in the middle. It was then that I realised that there must be previous books written about the Sigma Force. I felt like there were a lot characters and I didn't know much about them. As the book continued on, I was captivated again by the action and quickly finished. I suppose that I should read the previous books to get the back stories on these characters. Maybe th...more

What did I learn from this book... Um do not go exploring peat bogs are you will end up mummified.

Ok, maybe that wasn't the only thing. Not by far.

Because you see, Rollins is a master at blurring fact with fiction. Science with history. Action with intellect.

I'm not going to give any spoilers here, because there are way too many twists and turns you need to experience for yourself!

All I will say is that Sigma Force, the elite military research...more

This is the first James Rollins book I’ve read, and I must say It was a fabulous read. Even though this books runs in a series, it still stands alone and I had no problem understanding or following the characters. The way the story ended bothered me just a little, but other than that, inside the covers was a great place for my mind to inhabit a world full of spies, secret guilds, murder, intrigue, espionage, along with nonstop action. Every chapter ends by parking your imagination on the edge of...more
