by
Matt Wixon
Layoffs are rampant, gas prices are volatile, airlines are cutting flights, and Americans are feeling the economic pinch of a recession. As much as we hate it in this country of big dreams, big cars and Big Macs, we have to find a way to cut back. For many Americans, that means turning the Great American Vacation into a ?staycation, ? which is the big buzzword of the year,...more

Though I did get some good ideas from this book, I felt there were twp major flaws. 1- Many of the ideas revolved around things you'd find in your hometown... if you lived in a bigger city. 2- The author's idea of a traditional vacation involved extreme amounts of money, so lots of his staycation ideas, while they would be cheaper than a week in Europe, would still cost much more than I'm willing to spend. Nevertheless, the book did inspire me with some creative ideas. It was worth the read.
When I was growing up we did everything that was cheap or free that was close enough for a day trip. We didn't consider these things vacations, just weekends.
It is a short, quick read, 178 pages in 12 chapters. I liked the way websites were listed when mentioned in the text, but also in one list as an appendix. Don't think they needed to be listed again at the end of the chapters.
It does give you lots of ideas information for finding things to do.
Thee list below is just for my own information...more

It's not like this guys has any new ideas here--hello who hasn't done a "staycation". But I did like the rules he imposed onto "staycationing" and this book is FULL of resources and websites that I wouldn't have known about w/o him. A fun, quick read and it is organized each chapter by kind of staycation so easy to skip around to exactly what you're looking for.
I didn't really end up using this book for our staycation. Many of the ideas in here are things that cost a fair amount of money and the likely goal of a vacation at home is not spending as much. Kind of a disappointment. I found "The Book of Doing" by Allison Arden to be much more along the lines of what I was looking for. http://bookofdoing.com/ And, NO, I'm not related to her or paid to send you to this website!
