The Politics of Terrorism
21 June 2012

I remember reading this book a few years ago. A friend of mine had leant me a Chomsky book (Hegemony or Survival) and I literally lapped it up so when I was visiting my local library and found a copy of this book I immediately borrowed it and read it. I remember going to a 80s party around the same time and the thing that was sticking in my head was 'Ronald Reagan's War on Terror' and so to fit in with the 80s theme, I threw on a camo-shirt and went as 'Rona

As always, a very illuminating and frighteningly disturbing book. However, it doesn't serve as a history book concerning the external policy of the United States over the last 40 years(or as the author puts it : the emperor's brutal activities) and as such, it can be quite hard to follow it through at times. It can also feel a little outdated as well. I would suggest it though, since Chomsky's commentary is highly insightful.

It can be called a classic book on how the international domination are done by thieves(pirates), how they change the rule of the game to their strategic interests to suppress the normal God fearing people.

The story of international politics and the strategic allies in Middle East which maintained the U.S hegemony over world. The Israel and Gaza conflict is covered.

It is an eye opener on how the empires are made on lies and these very lies became their weakness which led to their downfall.

This is classic Chomsky. Although this is not as monolithic as some of his other works, he composes another well-referenced and extremely relevant critique on state power.

While reading this book it is difficult to dismiss the latest round of Israeli attacks on Gaza as self-defense, and instead lends the feeling that "this has all happened before", that state (US and allied) terror is (opinion: wrongly) taken to be justified by nature, and that even the American dissenting argument is framed in a

A collection of essays / talks on terrorism including thoughts on 9-11 and its aftermath. The parallels Chomsky draws between the real world and Orwell's "1984" are very powerful and indeed a linguist is the man to do it. A must read with regard to the middle east, Afganistan, Iraq and as usual - central and south America. The only minus is that he often digresses despite the tightly formulated chapter topic. This causes the book to feel like a chaotic mess jumping back and forth in both time an ...more

I was so hoping this would be better. The title is great, but the book itself barely even covers the idea of pirates and emperors. It's a dull trod through economic statistics and repetitious filler. I can't stand it! This seems to be typical of Chomsky, in that his collections of interviews and essays get to the point, but often when he writes an entire book himself, he really goes on and on about nothing (much like his speeches), with absurd amounts of overlap with his other works.

Long, repetitive, and too heavily invested in anecdotes that don't add up to a coherent story.
