As Tara Stewart drives through the dark, winter night, from Charlotte to Ottawa, she's haunted by ghosts from her past. Summoned to her abusive father's funeral, she hasn't been home, or spoken to her family, in years. Frozen Blood was chosen as the group read in the Horror Aficionados group for May 2010 and then after the fact we all discovered that it's extremely hard to get your hands on a copy of this book right now (it will be re-released and more readily available in the Fall of 2010). I was able to get one of 7 copies that are in US library systems. My copy visited Colorful Colorado from Riverton, Utah of all places! My librarian warned me that if I was late returning this book, I would be charged a $10...more

Ghosts, guilt and gore! How can you go wrong with that combination? Add in an apocalyptic storm and some dysfunctional family members, and you've got a story that won't let you leave until it's had its say.

The main character, Tara, is traveling to her father's home to hear the reading of his will. On the way, she hits a deer. From that point on, the action doesn't stop. As you learn more and more about Tara, her neuroses and her tragedies, you begin to feel a sense of impending doom that doesn't...more

This first novel from Sutherland was a worthy read, filled with intriguing characters caught in an extremely tense situation, chock full of suspense, conflict and angst. The author has mastered a sense of place and atmosphere, nicely sucking the reader into a world that has fallen prey to the worst hail storm to ever strike. With some scenes reminiscent of the great ice storm of 1998 which swept through Eastern Ontario with a vengeance, Sutherland nicely adds to the believability of the setting...more

An apocalyptic hailstorm, murderous sibling rivalry, schizophrenia, and ghostly manifestations are the unlikely ingredients in Joel Sutherland’s debut novel, Frozen Blood – a potboiler of gothic suspense likely to leave readers chilled to their cores.

A competently written novel - it could have done with tightening in a couple of places and there were a couple of ‘hmmm’ moments, but overall I enjoyed it. Intriguing cast and nice sense of place. Frozen Blood is a good base upon which Joel will no doubt build his writing career.

I don't think I ever really understood what was going on. The main character has a crisis situation and an unusual weather event co-incides to make a traumatic atmosphere in which the history of the main character is revealed.

I kept thinking just a little bit more insight into the true nature of the main character was called for. Nothing felt completely real, as concerned the interaction with her family. Maybe I was looking to have too much explained to me, but that was what I felt, lacking...
