I am currently reading Killer Pizza by Greg Taylor.I'm at the part were a guy from the Echo 8-Plex movie theater is about to leave but a monster stings him and makes him faint. I think the author dose a good job of putting a lot of details like the place was at a dead end and it hodgepodge of business. I had to pick this one up for the great name and the fact that the author grew up about when and where I did and had Chilly Billy as one of the inspirations for this middle-grade horror. Killer Pizza is light and fun as far as horror goes. Not that the monsters aren’t scary and the protagonists not in danger but it it’s gruesome, which given its target audience, shouldn’t be a surprise.

Toby Magill, the main protagonist, is a young man, slightly out of shape and addicted to the Food Network (and...more I had to pick this one up for the great name and the fact that the author grew up about when and where I did and had Chilly Billy as one of the inspirations for this middle-grade horror. Killer Pizza is light and fun as far as horror goes. Not that the monsters aren’t scary and the protagonists not in danger but it it’s gruesome, which given its target audience, shouldn’t be a surprise.

Toby Magill, the main protagonist, is a young man, slightly out of shape and addicted to the Food Network (and who can blame him?). He’s a wee bit too young in my opinion (either thirteen or fourteen, I can’t remember) for this, but that’s where the whole suspension of disbelief comes in. Toby gets hired on for what is going to be his dream job, making pizzas at Killer Pizza. He wants to be a chef one day and putting together pies with monster-themed names looks like a good start. He’s put together with a couple of other teens, Strobe, Annabel and Doug. The first two, along with Toby make a good team.

However, it wasn’t their pizza making skills that they were hired for. Their boss, Steve, and Killer Pizza’s owner, Harvey, are actually recruiting monster hunters and they want Toby, Strobe and Annabel to be a team. (Like I said, their very young ages really work against my suspension of disbelief but I am greatly older than the intended target audience). He shows them a guttata, a monster that’s been responsible for the disappearances of teens they’ve been hearing about. It infects them via its bite and they become a gutatta, maintaining a human appearance until the full moon.

While not sure he wants to do more than sling dough, Toby does reluctantly join the training, bringing him painfully close to the danger. The threesome has to fight monsters and keep themselves safe. Overall, it’s fun. Some middle-grade books, like the Percy Jackson series, work for all ages. This works but not quite as well. I’m sure if I were fourteen I’d have had less problems with young teens being recruited to fight monsters. Heck if they had just been about two years older I would have had less trouble (Buffy, anyone?). That aside Toby is a well-drawn character. We spend more time in his pov than the others who aren’t quite as strong as characters (which could change in the sequels. I know there’s at least one).

On a technical note, there was quite a bit of telling rather than showing, passive verbs and extreme exclamation mark abuse (maybe the rules aren’t as strict in middle grade fiction) there were some pages where we neared a dozen exclamation marks per page. Ah well, those were minor. Toby and the others are fun characters.

Enjoyable and brisk. Clearly written for the MG crowd - macabre things are happening in town, though the book stops short of going all the way (death/horrific events toned down for the kiddies). I am not a gore-lover by any means, but even though the book is called "Killer Pizza" and features supernatural blood-suckers, the book is more action than horror. I would have liked it more if it was scarier/the least bit tense - then again, I am an adult, so whereas I shrug my shoulders perhaps a ten-y...more

Positive Points
The main character's voice was great. Toby is an average kid with a passion for cooking nobody knows about. I could relate with him in many ways. His growth from an insecure kid to a bold, courageous monster fighter is gradual and realistic. I found myself cheering for him and celebrating his success.

This book has a fun premise: three teens are hired by a local pizza delivery place, only to discover that it's a front for an international monster-hunting organization, and their jobs were just a pretext for recruiting them into the group. The (probably) main character, Toby, is sort of a drifter in his own life: he starts things, then gives up before he gets very far, mainly because there isn't anything he really cares about...except cooking, which he's too shy about to admit to anyone. Working at Killer Pizza gives him the confidence to follow that dream and the ability to push through the hard times because he's got his teammates depending on him. There's some good action, scary monsters, and I liked that Toby's physical transformation (he's sort of a couch potato before the KP training regimen tones him up) doesn't instantly make him self-confident as well.

Unfortunately, Killer Pizza has some writing and structural problems that get in the way of the story being exceptional. Most serious of these is that the point of view shifts frequently not only between characters, but between a third-person-limited and third-person-omniscient tone that in a horror/thriller/action novel kills the illusion of immediacy. Since the third-person-omniscient POV often turns into the author telling the reader what's happening instead of showing it, it's like the narrative is full of potholes that stop you just as the tension is starting to build up steam. I think that's unfortunate because one of the things Taylor does well is create extremely tense horror-movie scenes. On the other hand, the scenes in which Our Heroes face off against their terrifying foes tend to be full of gratuitous exclamation marks! which are multiplied depending on how dramatic the event is!! because Taylor, not being satisfied with describing an action sequence, needs to sum up what we've just seen happen with a single descriptive sentence!!! (I am not making this up. Some sentences end with multiple exclamation marks.) All of this should have been addressed by an editor before the book ever saw daylight.

There are some moderately gory episodes, including a homeless man being devoured by one of the monsters and a creature being shot in the eye, that make me hesitate to recommend this for the middle-grade audience it's probably meant for. I'd say it's a good read for teens interested in action or horror stories who care more about the story than how it's told, because underneath it all, there's a good (if not groundbreakingly original) story here.(less)

This was one of those silly books that I just saw and thought "I have got to read that!" This book was better than I expected, not quite as silly, and more interesting.

Toby thought he was getting a summer job and that it might conveniently give him some needed experience for his future dream job as a chef in his own restaurant. Little did he know what applying at and scoring a job at Killer Pizza would mean.

Two other teens, Annabel and Strobe, start training at Killer Pizza at the same time as Toby. A fourth teen, named Doug, seems like a reluctant future employee when he arrives to join their team. The training is intense as the four teens learn recipes, oven skills, and the general rules involved in working for the popular pizza joint. They seem like a pretty good team except for Doug. He just doesn't seem that into it.

During the early weeks at Killer Pizza, Toby gets home pretty beat, and when some spectacular nightmares start interrupting his sleep, he's unnerved. The dreams seem so real, and the glimpses of a terrifying monster he experiences soon take on a meaning he never imagined possible.

The innocent summer job turns out to be a cover operation for a group of monster hunters. Disinterested Doug turns out to be Harvey, the head of the whole operation. Toby, Annabel, and Strobe are being recruited as MCO's - Monster Combat Officers. Their employment at Killer Pizza has been a test to determine their suitability as candidates for the MCO Academy.

As soon as their participation begins, they learn that monsters really do exist. In fact, their small town may be infested with hideous monsters known as guttata. Disguised as humans, these guttata are attacking and infecting innocent citizens with the hope of taking over the place.

What follows is a fabulous monster hunt complete with crossbows, explosive devices, deadly talons and fangs, and intense battle scenes. The three MCO trainees are now involved in stakeouts, illegal breaking and entering, and car chases instead of kneading pizza dough and slicing pies.

KILLER PIZZA is an action-packed horror romp sure to interest middle grade readers and teens, especially fans of authors like Darren Shan and R.L. Stine. Author Greg Taylor uses his previous screenwriting experience to create scenes that crackle with excitement and leap off the pages. This first novel offers great summer reading potential.

I picked up the book yesterday while taking my class to the library. I have to admit to being attracted to the title and the cover. I checked Amazon which said it was a fun light read and was endorsed by RL Stine. I have never read any Stine books but I'm familiar with the genre.

Okay so I didn't know this book existed until I about 2 weeks ago. Since my friend had two books with him. Killer Pizza being one of them and The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan the other. He wanted to read The Red Pyramid and I'd already read it anyways (really good book by the way)so I decided to read Killer Pizza not really thinking I'd get into it.

Boy was I dead wrong. I devoured Killer Pizza (pun intended) It was actually surprisingly good.
Basically a 14-yr old boy named Toby wants to be a chef when he grows up. So he takes a job at the local pizza shop called Killer Pizza. Its nothing but normal. Turns out the restaurant is a front for a monster hunting corporation. Along with his fellow co workers and monster hunters they go through a vigorous monster training. There's vampires, werewolves, you name it, but the main creature they focus on is the guttata. This monster who can turn human and into this crazy creature. They're trained to fight them but the question is will they be ready for the real thing? (Wow that was dramatic) Of course there were flaws like in most debut novels but they're weren't loads, and they weren't as much as the characters or the plot-line go but in the actual writing.

Greg Taylor's writing was good it just didn't flow as nicely as it should. One minute they were standing in the garden the next they were getting arrested. It was all very fast and not explained in lots of details but I guess he was trying to make the novel fast-paced which he accomplished, it just wasn't the smoothest transitions.

Also, I felt like I was back in a Percy Jackson novel. For example this sentence: He didn't know why but water was his salvation. (thinks Toby when he's being chased by a monster) Okay son of Poseidon, okay. And I mean Annabel? Really? Drop the l and add th. She's smart AND good with weapons, wow, sound familiar. But Strobe wasn't Grover, he was standoffish at the beginning but near the middle he opened up slowly. I think he's my favorite character and I hope he gets a bigger role in the sequel. He's sarcastic and has an exhilaration for fighting monsters which also reminds me of another book character I know.
Toby was a bit cowardly when he ran away from his first encounter with a monster but I would probably be cowering in fear too an want to bolt if I was in his shoes. He did step it up though, a lot as the book progressed. Which was nice. I liked him too.

If you overlook those two critiques I have this book was incredible. Action-packed, and fun I really enjoyed this book.

I liked how most of the story is told from Toby's perspective but we got a few sections with the other characters took over.

I hope we see the characters background stories develop more in the sequel, I'm especially interested in Strobe's background (who's real name by the way is Gordon Tibbles, I got a kick our of that)

Thanks to my friend- who probably won't even see this- for lending me his copy and introducing me to Killer Pizza. Definitely going to see what new adventure the trio go on in the next one! :) (Oh and thank god this one didn't end with a cliffie, I would have turned into a guttata) (less)

This book was a blast with just the right amount of tension and fun and intellectual type stuff and I can safely recommend this book to the young people I volunteer with as there is no objectionable material in the book - unless you count murderous monsters...

Killer Pizza is a fun book that both upper and lower level YAs will love. It has a paranormal/supernatural component, since the kids are fighting monsters, but it's a bit more light than most YA paranormal/supernatural books. Hahaha. . .this was a cute book! Loved the references to FoodNetwork! The cooking aspect of Toby made him all the more interesting and I loved the interplay between the three MCOs. The owner of Killer Pizza makes you laugh when you find out who he is! So funny that. . . no I will not give anything away. . .

I felt the the monsters were a little over the top (an Alpha who secreates saliva for his minions? Really?) but they were definitely strange and new (no vampires or werewolves here!)

I'm reading the book Killer Pizza and I'm on page 223. Toby says goodbye to Strobe while Toby is in the intersection and a BMW honked the horn and drived by Toby. Toby decided to go home and experiment with new Killer Pizza Flavors to calm him down. Decent writing and characters are marred by a plot that is a poorly conceived variation on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Men In Black." (And other stories of paranormal monster hunter squads.) This book was recommended to me by a couple of my classmates, and boy do they got so awsome taste! I thought the story was well put together, but a flaw for me was the characterization. It sucked. Toby should have been a little more in shape, and reading comics everyday doesn't fit in right with the non-stop action.
