Bewildered and terrified after her bridegroom put a pistol to his head and pulled the trigger, lovely young Muireann Caldwell was faced with two options: She could return to her stifiling parents in Scotland and the sheltered existence she once knew, or take a chance and make a new life for herself on her husband's estate, Barnakilla. She refused to go running home in defe ...more

Ugh.... Did not like this book. I forced myself to read halfway through... and it felt like homework. I just wasn't in to it at all, so I stopped reading. I was expecting to have a lot of rich history, and drama around the time of the Irish potato famine.... I guess I was expecting an interesting survival story... But no. Plus, the way the h talked drove me insane. There was no depth or passion behind it... It seemed overanalyzed and thought out. People usually speak at the spur of the moment so ...more

Rich locale and time period. Lots of dramatic tension. Heroine just a little too perfect.

3 stars.

The year is 1845. The place is Ireland. Muireann, a Scottish lady of only twenty-one years, is married only two weeks when her husband shoots himself on the day they return from their honeymoon to his native Ireland. (We do not find out the full story surrounding the shooting until near the end of the novel but we suspect the truth.) Muireann’s husband had lied when he courted her, claiming he was w

Interesting but not wonderful Irish Romance

This story is set in 1845, the year of Ireland's Great Famine, and tells of a young Scottish woman, Muireann Caldwell, who while on her honeymoon traveling to Ireland with her ne'er-do-well Irish husband of two weeks, is suddenly made a widow when he commits suicide. Her husband's estate manager, handsome Lochlainn Roche, doesn't want her to return to Scotland as he needs her to restore his boyhood home of Barnakilla that she now owns. So he urges her t

Loved Muireann, she was fighter and a thinker. So many characters are couragous without having plans and just kind of luck into what happens to them, she made plans and contengencies and got back up whenever the world got her down.
If the rest of the characters were as good I'd have loved it, but Lochlainn was a pill. Honestly, if someone had worked as hard beside me as Muiri, and said again and again that they would fight for our home. I'd start to trust them no matter what how damaged I was em

It's an inoffensive read. I quite liked the strength of the heroine but also found her quite irritating, though I can't quite put my finger on why! There was a bit too much drama and not quite enough banter for me personally.
I really liked that the setting of this book was in Ireland during the potato famine, that the heroine was a capable female who was very enterprising in turning the estate around. The drawback to the book is that both heroine/hero were very insecure about the other leaving them, and never telling each other what the other was thinking about. It got really old after a while.

Note: It appears that the author of this book is also known as Shannon Farrell. I reviewed the Shannon Farrell edition of Call Home The Heart and gave it 3 stars.
