I really liked this one. The story focuses on Minerva Dobbs - and 33 year old overweight woman who just got dumped. While at the bar with girlfriends she overhears her jerk ex-boyfriend bet one of his friends (Calvin Morrisey - hunk alert!) that he can't take her home and do the horizontal tango. Minerva decides to screw with them both by stringing Calvin along. Her evil ex dumped her just before her sisters wedding so she figures this will be perfect - she can bring the hunky lap dog with her a...more

God bless Chick-lit. Especially Chick-lit that's happy and filled with sexual tension and innuendo!
Here's the story: Min Dobbs (yes, horrible name, but it illustrates how 'plain' she sees herself) gets dumped in the opening sentences by David, who then meets up with God's gift to women, Cal Morrisey and bets him that Cal can't bed Min in a month (because David couldn't in two). At the exact same moment, Min and her girlfriends are checking out Cal and daring Min to go over to him. She ...more

I heard about Jenny Crusie through fandom_wank, and thence found myself at Arrgh Ink, her amusingly written blog about writing. Her blog was so funny that I randomly chose one of her novels and read it. Bet Me is not as funny as her blog, but it does have its moments. The plot is thin, the characters are cardboard cutouts, and the ending is as preordained as it gets. Nevertheless, Julian and I both finished it, so it can’t be that bad.

What a fabulously outstanding hilarious read. The dialogue has to be just right for me to enjoy a book like this. There were more than one romance in the works, and a lot of characters interacting...but let me tell you...It was perfect!
This quirky and out of the Historical/Otherworldly genre box novel will have you laughing and pulling for this not so perfect girl.

Imagine sitting down to dinner and being served the most perfectly-cooked dish you can imagine, beautifully presented, exactly the right temperature, everything about it impeccable, except...it's a dish you don't like to eat.
That's more or less how I feel about this book. It's well written, it's full of life and heat and warmth, and it left even cynical little ole me with the warm fuzzies. If you like chicklit, you'll adore this.
But I don't.

This is my ultimate guilty pleasure, beach book piece of fluff, and consequently I read it in its entirety while I was at the beach this weekend. Whenever I'm in the dumps, there are 2 books I pick up, and this piece of hardcover romantic comedy is one of them. When I broke my leg, I probably read it 5 times in those 3 months.

I loved this book. This is the 4th book that I have read by this author and she really has a way with showing real life relationships, with all the flaws, perfections, and everything in between. The books that she writes are not your average romance novels, they are weird, and quirky, true to life kind of situations, no fluff!!

This book came highly recommended from the A/zon ladies. I am about a third of the way through and only stopped to sleep (at about 2am) now having fun on these sites but am really looking forward to finishing the book this afternoon. Lovin' it.
Finished it at 1am this morning. Loved the book! The interaction between Cal & Min were priceless. I really loved both their characters and their sidekicks (esp. Roger and Bon - Liza was kickass too). It was a fast read only because I was...more

Read this last summer- cute for the genre. Anybody who likes Krispy Kremes has to be good!
And hints from the book helped me snazz up my Chicken Marsala recipe!
I'm growing fond of this author, who I have been told is a fan of BookCrossing.

Min is the heroine in this book. She is cranky and ... non-thin, but she never asks anyone to pity her for it. She only gets depressed and scared when she figures out she loves Cal, to her her biggest weakness is Cal. The rest of the novel she is secure with herself, kicking rear-ends and taking names. She would be a great friend to have.
I think it is really hard for authors to take a character and have them change and have you as a reader believe it. Cal in the beginning was not at...more

Why is this the best romance novel ever written? Two words Min and Cal. (OK three words)

Lately I've been feeling a bit blue. Nothing desperate. Just in need of some cheering up, some laughter, something bright inside amid all this dreary weather we're enduring outside. I found myself craving it every night when I settled down to read and just not finding it in the books stacked around me. Then about month ago Keishon over at Avid Book Reader reviewed Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie. I love Keishon's reviews and eclectic taste and I remembered I'd been wanting to give Crusie a try for...more

Thirty-three-year-old Minerva Dobbs is annoyed when her current boyfriend dumps her three weeks before her sisters' wedding. But she's downright furious a few moments later when she overhears her now "ex" boyfriend bet hunky Calvin Morrisey that he can't take her home and bed her. In fact, she's so angry at them both that she lets Cal take her to dinner and decides to string him along until after her sisters' wedding. Minerva pegs Cal as a handsome "used car salesman of seducers."...more

This is the second time I read this book. The first time was several years ago. I remembered loving it then and wondered if I still would on a second reading. And oh yes, I did.
The characters are set as modern day fairy tale. Min has just been dumped by her boyfriend for not having sex with him. Cal has just broken up with his girlfriend because she wanted to get married. When Min's ex bets Cal he can't get her into bed in a month...and hears him...hijinks ensue.

This book I found when I read the forward in the back of another book. The idea of an over weight heroine intrigued me. So I looked for it at my local bookstore. I was right! I loved it!
Min is a statician, working for her fathers company, that has just been dumped by her boyfriend. She is over weight, and in need of a date for her sisters wedding. So now what? Her best friends see a man across the bar and challenge her to go over and meet him. But when she goes over she over hears h...more

Min Dobbs is a 30-something, recently dumped, pleasantly plump actuary. She's not a risk taker; she's sensible. And she's sensibly furious when she overhears the uber-charming Cal Morrissey bet her ex-boyfriend $10 that he can get her into bed in a month's time--or at least that's what she thinks she heard. Min makes the reasonable decision not to get involved with Cal, but this turns out to be easier said than done...

Reading all the excellent early reviews of this book (even Kirkus, curmudgeons that they are, rave) a person might get the idea that Jenny Crusie is a bit of light hearted fun, somebody you can count on to make you laugh. Which is, in fact, true.
Her prose is deceptively accessible, her characters quirky and interesting (Min, the sensible actuary who has given up on love and is looking for a cat; Cal, the self-possessed, easy going partner in a firm that does software seminars and who...more

Bet Me is my favorite of Jennifer Crusie’s, and I’m a big fan of hers, so that is saying something. It also is just as good after multiple reads. I usually can’t wait to get back to Min and Liza and Bonnie and the “if” dinner. Min is an actuary who is dumped by a not-very-nice-guy 3 weeks before her sister’s wedding. When she overhears the now ex-boyfriend bet a gorgeous man he can’t get her into bed in a month, she figures she can string him along for the 3 weeks until the wed...more
