As a bookseller, I was fortunate to get an advanced copy of this novel, the sequel to BEFORE THE STORM. With the exception of a few books (such as Marisa de los Santos' BELONG TO ME), I am usually a bit disappointed with sequels. SECRETS SHE LEFT BEHIND is one of the few exceptions...I loved it!

Diane Chamberlain knows how to create suspense with plot elements she reveals to her readers, but keeps hidden from her characters. She did that successfully in Secrets She Left Behind with an important letter that isn't read when it should be and with a woman who develops relationships with two of the main characters without revealing her friendship with Maggie to Keith or her affair with Keith to Maggie. Since I read another of Diane chamberlain's books earlier this year I am eager to read them all. I had read a couple of hers previously and while I also enjoyed them a lot my tbr piles had so many other books there and I hadn't read some of them until this year.
This one also did not disappoint. The author writes these novels with stories that are so emotional and thought provoking and reading them you become so involved with the characters. I read the last half of book in one sitting.

A good sequel that has plenty to offer and doesn't just go over the old ground of the first book. Although many people have stated that this is a stand alone book, I think to really appreciate the evolution of the characters you need to read the first book Before the Storm

Another good summer reading book; perhaps because it takes place near the ocean. "Secrets She Left Behind" captured my interest from the opening page. This novel is about several dysfunctional but loving families whose lives are painfully interwoven. This novel was an excellent multi-layered story. I loved how the point of view changed with each chapter so that the reader got to hear from each character in the novel. Although this is a sequel to Before The Storm, you do not need to have read it to appreciate this book.

Maggie has spent a year in prison for her intent to set a fire in order to allow her boyfriend to advance in the fire department. Her half brother, Keith was severely burned in the fire and was the one who tossed a lit cigarette into the fuel that caused the conflagration. Another half brother, Andy, was initially thought to be the culprit, but he was since absolved of any responsibility. These siblings, related through their mothers and their fathers, have a complicated relationship.

The story begins with Maggie's release. She returns home to find that the townspeople can't forgive her for the fire and the subsequent deaths. She has to do community service as part of her release, but everywhere she goes, she's scorned and dismissed. Keith, in severe pain from his burns, has taken to beer and Percocet for survival. Andy, with his fetal alcohol syndrome, is finding life difficult juggling a girlfriend and dealing with his sister. At the start of the story, Keith's mother disappears and he is left on his own to deal with both Maggie's release and his own well being. Enter a stranger who quickly endears herself to the fearful Maggie and to the lonely Keith. Who is Jen and why is she not being totally honest with these siblings?

The plot is revealed by chapter as Sara, Keith's mother, explains her life and dilemma. When she disappears, Keith has no choice but to accept financial help from Maggie's mother and uncle -- but he hates them! Their convoluted relationship baffles and distresses him -- but all the while he wonders why and where his mother has gone. Maggie, Keith and Andy all share the details of how they come to grips with the aftermath of the fire and their lives.

This is a wonderful novel and one to be savored. You don't need to have read the previous book to "get" this story but I can imagine that it would only add to the total enjoyment. The characters are well developed and the reader is drawn easily and completely into their lives.

Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this book; Chamberlain is an excellent storyteller. That said, there were a lot of points during the novel when I found myself feeling a little lost, and it wasn't until I was finished with the book that I realized the first half of the story was told in Before the Storm. As I hadn't read the first book, I definitely felt at a disadvantage during some of the action.

This is a part follow up, part stand alone book to a previous book Chamberlain has written. Its a follow up to Before the Storm and focuses on the same family but it written from the perspective of a different character. It follows Maggie who has been released from Prison and her building her life back together. Her writing is likened to Jodi Picoult and I can see why. This book follows the characters introduced in Before the Storm. I hadn't read Before the Storm before reading this one and don't think it mattered once I had worked out the characters. The sequel to "Before the Storm", I would highly recommend reading that book first. While Chamberlain tries to address what happened in "BtS" in this book, there is so much more story behind this actions in this book that I can't imagine what it would be like to just read this.

I did not read the previous novel, Before the Storm, so I was not sure what this book was going to be like. I did, however, enjoy it. This book can stand alone as a good story. I was able to follow along without having previous knowledge of the characters.

This is a wonderful followup to the characters and stories introduced in BEFORE THE STORM. It also has the back story of a few of the characters running through it too. It is a good book and I enjoyed it and would recommend it. I can't believe it's been a year since I read Before the Storm. Nor can I believe I've had this book on my shelf for so long. Since reading Before the Storm I've read 3 more Diane Chamberlain novels (in addition to the Lost Daughter which I read before BTS) and I have to say I am really loving her work.

Secrets she Left Behind takes place a year after Before the Storm. So maybe the gap in my reading makes sense. The novel picks up with Maggie Lockwood finishing her 12 month sentence for the fire....more I can't believe it's been a year since I read Before the Storm. Nor can I believe I've had this book on my shelf for so long. Since reading Before the Storm I've read 3 more Diane Chamberlain novels (in addition to the Lost Daughter which I read before BTS) and I have to say I am really loving her work.

Secrets she Left Behind takes place a year after Before the Storm. So maybe the gap in my reading makes sense. The novel picks up with Maggie Lockwood finishing her 12 month sentence for the fire. The fire which killed three and injured many including Keith.

While the back of the novel seems to promote this as Maggie's book really it is Keith's – although their stories are very much intertwined. Keith was badly scarred in the fire which Maggie set but he's story is about a lot more than that. Keith is actually Maggie's half-brother – fathered as the result of an affair between Jamie (Maggie's dad) and Sara (Keith's mum). Making this family tree a little bit more complicated is Andy – Maggie's little brother who Maggie discovers during the book (but which the read found out in book 1) is actually her half brother as well. Andy's real father is not Jamie Lockwood but rather Jamie's brother Marcus. So back to Keith. His story really starts with the disappearance of his mum Sara. As time passes and Sara isn't found Keith goes on quite an emotional journey.

Maggie's story is a little different with her adjusting to life back in the world. The characters of the novel live on what I believe is quite a small island so everybody knows who Maggie is and what she did. She spends a lot of the novel hiding away. As part of her sentence Maggie must complete 300 hours of community service. And some of the scenes in the hospital where she does some of these hours is very emotional.

And then there is Jen. A character who ties to both Keith and Maggie although the reason isn't quite clear until near the end of the novel. I guessed that something was going to happen with the character and that she wasn't what she seemed but I didn't manage to work out exactly who she was.

Throughout the novel we are given Sara's insight in to the past through memoirs she had written. This allowed the reader to get her point of view on many of the events that we talked about in Before the Storm. It actually gave a bit more depth to it. Although I'll admit I did end up thumbing quickly through BTS just to jog my memory of certain things. - like how Jamie died.

And then there is the sweet little story of Andy and his girlfriend Kimmie. The previous book was very much about Andy but in this novel he takes more of a back seat although his actions early on in the novel do set some wheels in motion. I liked the relationship between the two although I wish we had seen his friend Emily from the first novel in the role. Emily isn't seen in this book at all although her family are briefly mentioned a few times.

This was a very enjoyable book to read although I'm not sure that I enjoyed it as much as Before The Storm and I wish it hadn't end where it did. I'd have liked to have known what happened to Maggie – did she complete her 300 hours and how did she do? Did she ever leave Topsail in order to live more freely? How did Keith cope with life? Did he and Maggie ever manage to forge a relationship after everything that happened? What about Keith and Andy?

Maybe there will be a third book. But I somehow doubt it. (less)

There is just something so magical about picking up a book and reading about characters I already fell in love with in another book....it’s like a reunion with an old friend....some things have changed, since you last saw them, but they are the same people, carrying on as affected by their past that you already know so well....And I just fell right into the rhythm of this book in just that way....and knowing from the first page that it was going to be a great read !

I don't agree with any of the reviews I've read. Don't get me wrong - I love Diane Chamberlain's books, but this one didn't do it for me. I have read a couple Diane Chamberlain books before and she never disappoints. This book was enthralling, and riveting. I couldn't put it down. Nothing is more annoying than when you are reading a book and you begin to suspect it is a sequel. You can always tell when the past histories of the side character's are a bit too complicated and keep getting thrown in as an aside. We rejoin the Lockwood family in this sequel following Maggie's prison sentence for the arson that she committed to a community church. She rejoins society only to be welcomed with great anger from the families of those that were lost or injured and finds it is more difficult to return to society than she could ever imagine. Even simple things like volunteering her time to charity becomes difficult because no one wants to be associated with her. She deals with the guilt for the wrong she has done and is faced with learning to try and love herself again. She is happily surprised when she meets a new girl in town who befriends her and seems to look past her faults. Will this friendship help Maggie love herself again?

In the meantime, Keith, Sara's son, discovers that his mother has disappeared without a trace. He is now left alone with the burns from the fire, the emotional and physical pain that he now has to endure alone, and his anger towards Maggie for what she has done. Abandoned by his mother, he is forced to get help from the Lockwood family to help him survive the day-to-day expenses. Luckily, he meets a girl who makes him feel somewhat whole again and can look past his scars to the person he is.

The plot thickens as Sara's past is told through her eyes, Keith and Maggie finally see each other after her time in jail, Maggie tries to find a way to forgive herself, Keith deals with the abandonment of his mom, and a surprising twist occurs at the end that will take the reader by surprise.

I found this to be a really satisfying read especially since I was so disappointed with the abrupt ending of the first book. I was able to read this in just a few nights and would love for the story of the Lockwoods to continue!

While some sequels can be read without reading the first book, this is one that you really need to read the first book to really get all of the family drama. It is a twisted family tree and reading the first book will provide reference to just how tangled those branches are!(less)

A beautifully written book about a shattered family. When a woman disappears she leaves behind a wake of questions, anger and secrets. Whilst the prequel to this book "Before The Storm" was slow to catch my interest, I started this book immediately after I finished that one so I'd keep the momentum. There were so many characters you grow to love during the book. (this series is definitely movie worthy as in your mind you picture the main characters and the setting)! As usual, Chamberlain grabs you from page one until the end. I would love to see a third book (as follow up with Maggie, Andy, and Keith).

Sara was my favorite character –a woman who gives so much of herself and to her son and deeply in love with Jamie who no longer lives and the life she could not attain. Maggie who learns how to forgive herself and grow in love and maturity. Andy (loved author’s dialogue with this character – which was very realistic and always put a smile on your face with his funny thoughts. Keith, a wonderful character who suffered so much and met so many challenges – learning to love his family and finally depend on them. Marcus – (you have to love)another one who grew so much since book one, taking care of his family and his love for Andy, Sara, and Maggie, and the special bond with Keith, his brother’s son-taking him under his wing. Also the added character of Jen was excellent and the mystery she created. A book of love, joy, forgiveness, pain, and acceptance! Another winner!!!

I have read most of Diane’s new books and going back to her older books which I missed. As with all my favorite authors – start with new ones and then you want to read everything the writer has written – you will not be disappointed! Be sure and read the Before the Storm first as it will make it more enjoyable to know the history of the characters.
