Saltwater Moons
by
Julie Gittus (Goodreads Author)
In the beginning it seems so simple. A poem in the mail. A weekend invitation to the coast. But when Sun says yes to a midnight walk, her life becomes suddenly complicated. Saltwater Moons tells the story of Sun Langley during her final months of Year Twelve. There's the intensity of her first relationship, complicated by the fact she continues to exchange poems with her b...more

I want to go visit Australia. I don't know if everyone lives by the ocean and eats olive paté and quince paste and puts grapes in their salads or serves lime blossom tea with honey, but I'd really like to find out.
Saltwater Moons certainly makes Melbourne seem like a beautiful place to live. Sunday is visiting her crush Tycho's parents' house on the coast, and she is drawn to romantic lure of surf and sand and moonlight, as well as increasingly attracted to the boy who invited her. One night whe...more

Another Aussie Hit!
It’s a true testament to how much I enjoy a book when I forego an entire sunny afternoon to curl up on my couch and read a book from beginning to end in one sitting. I find I do that quite often with books penned by Aussie writers. It’s like there’s a magic and realism about them. Something like tuning into a story you're already familiar with to get another few chapters of someone’s life… someone you feel you know and a story that seems so real. I don’t know how else to put i...more

When I finished Saltwater Moons last night, I had mixed feelings. There were a lot of things that happened that brought out my anger, but I just could not stop reading. I thought the story was intriguing, the setting was nice, and I really liked the writing. (All the Australian books I've read so far have great writing.) Those must have been the reasons why I couldn't put the book down because I know some of the characters weren't the ones who kept me going.

This is the story of a young girl who lives in Wattle Glen, close to where I used to live. But apart from the pleasure of reading about familiar scenery, the writing itself held me. How vivid were the best friends scenarios, with the fights, betrayals, confusion and loyalty. And the romance. The poems in the mail, with the indirect messages. Lovely romance. And of course, I loved the poetry. What a catastrophe losing one's virginity can be. Such a loaded thing, and an experience you can't just r...more
A poem in the mail, and Sunday ‘Sun’ Langley suddenly finds herself falling for a boy named Tycho.
But Tycho has an ex-girlfriend who he might not be over. And Tycho’s best mate, Mark, has taken an interest in Sun. But Mark just so happens to be the boy who recently broke Sun’s best friend’s heart, and Nicky isn’t over him yet.
A poem in the mail. A mermaid on her arm and always thinking of the wrong boy … this is Sun Langley’s final days of year twelve, and the minor emotional disasters that com...more

Well. I have to say by looking at the cover of this book I expected a typical stereotype two-guys-like-a-girl book. But thats not what I got.
Firstly I was surprised to find out that this was a book written by an Australian author(Julie Gittus, Go Aussies!!)
But the thing that I really liked about this book was how different it was. I mean sure, the basic story line may be typical but it was the way it was written that really stood out to me.

Gosh, what a beautiful book for teenagers.
This is the story of Sun, in the last few months of high school. She meets two older guys and everything changes.
It's a story of love and betrayal and heartbreak and loyalty and getting it all mixed up. It seamlessly portrays that adolescent feeling of muddling through a confusion of feelings ~ of wanting independence from your family, and get tangled up in a relationship which can be beautiful and painful. Of being unsure of yourself but determined to...more

Beautifully written. Captivating backdrop and setting. Another enticing Aussie book for the summer.
Though this book is a coming of age book, I feel that the target audience should be the mature teens just because it is abundant with sex and sexual innuendos. I found it to be more about a summer of raging hormones and curiosity with sex and discovering the difference between lust and love and romance. There was just so much about this book that bothered me and I ofte...more

Look out, it’s another Aussie YA book. And another Aussie author who has strong writing skills and uses evocative language. This one ended up being around a 3.5 for me but it still puts a lot of American YA to shame. Of course, and we’ve had this discussion many a time, it is probably because there is so much more American YA so we have to wade through the muck to find the gems. Er, or whatever else you could find in the muck. Clearly, I am no Aussie YA author as I just gave you the mental image...more

Saltwater Moons is a book about messy teenage actions and the consequences and lessons of those actions. It's about the confusion of firsts, betrayal and ultimately self discovery.
This book actually really surprised me once it was all said and done. I liked it but at the same time it felt unsettlingly. Julie Gittus pens a very conflicting plot, quickening the emotions in her readers from rage to hope, which is my favorite part of reading, so while I didn't q...more

Favourite Quote: "Time stretched, expanded so there was just him and me and the closeness, and I thought how it was all very well to tell yourself what you should and shouldn't feel but in the end the should word didn't make the slightest scrap of difference."

Pleasantly-written, but slightly unrealistic, portrayal of teenage love, and coming of age. I felt that Sun Langley was not clearly realised in that she made choices for her life that I didn't think she would have made based on her character in the beginning of the story. That said, I'm sure that the situations that Sun finds herself in happen to young people everyday, and as an allegory for teenagehood, it is a good read.
FABULOUS cover!

Mark is a pretty solid illustration of a horrible, self-centred, abusive boyfriend, and I hope teen girls reading this book in similar relationships realise, as Sun does, that this is not okay. I wish Gittus had been more explicit in figuring Mark's rape of Sun as rape, because it ends up folding into Sun's uncertainty and guilt and what she terms weakness in unhelpful ways.
This book is beautifully written - as you'd expect since poetry is a driving force in the novel. The portrayal of 'the human condition', especially when we're young and inexperienced, was also key to my enjoyment as a reader. I love the element of possibility that accompanies each character: things aren't always as they seem, nothing's fixed, and even the most difficult of situations can suddenly change for the better. Loved it!

I actually liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I got this book out from the library just for something quick to read and wasn't really expecting too much to be honest but as the book progressed I started to get attached and couldn't stop reading. Saltwater Moons is just an elegant story about a teenage girl growing up. It just flowed so nicely and I really enjoyed it.
