Dinosaurs... Trucks... What's Not to Love!
This is a cute book that young children who like dinosaurs and mechanical things (cars, trucks, trains) are going to love. Dinotrux , you see, are critters that are part dinosaur and part mobile equipment, and Chris Gall's premise is that millions of years ago Dinotrux ruled the earth, giving cave people something to think about.
The text is on the 2nd Grade level, and generally an easy read except for the amalgamated names. Here's a sample:

Once in a while a picture book author will mix dinosaurs in with another popular genre. The logic behind this is clear. If dinos sell and trains sell, why not write something like All Aboard the Dinotrain? As a result, dinosaurs have been mixed together with everything from bedtime stories (How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight) to ballet (T. Rex at Swan Lake). One mixed-pair that hasn’t really happened before, as far as I know, is trucks and dinosaurs. I can just see various authors pondering the poss...more
One of my sons favorite books. Makes trucks look like dinosaurs. Gives them funny names like Deliveradons and Firesaurus. Great book for students who love either trucks or dinosaurs. Teachers could have students that are artistic draw other similar type of translations. Would be interesting to see what female students could develop.
This book could be used for male students who are reserved or shy in class (hopefully allow them to talk about a passion of theirs).

The trucks we see today are useful, but millions of years ago prehistoric trucks roamed the earth, huge and hungry. They were called Dinotrux. They didn’t play well with each other and terrorized the cave people. The Craneosaurus used his long neck to eat the birds in the trees. The Firesaurus spit out raw lava. And the bully of the prehistoric land was the Trannosaurus Trux. After ruling for millions of years there was a huge and terrible storm. Many Dinotrux rusted, but the smarter ones went s...more
“Millions of Years Ago
Prehistoric Trucks roamed the earth.
They were Huge.
They were Hungry.
But they weren’t helpful like they are today.
They rumbled, roared, and chomped.
And they did Not get along well with others
They were called….DINOTRUX!”
In the world of children’s literature, what do kids love more than Dinosaurs and Trucks? Chris Gall, author/illustrator of Dear Fish and There’s Nothing to Do on Mars, decided to combine these two genres and create the amusingly creative Dinotrux. The storylin...more

I was not too impressed with it. I thought the pictures would interest young boys, but the story was above their heads and convoluted - the pictures had to be explained.

"Dinotrux" is a collaboration of two favorite things, dinosaurs and big trucks. Using rhyme and wonderful illustrations, the reader is given a visual, imaginative esson on what dinosaurs would be like if they were part trucks. From the Garbageadons to the Firesaurus, this truck will show how modern day trucks evolved from dinotrux.

okay, what do some kids love the most? Dinosaurs and trucks! Let's put them together and call them, DINOTRUX! After my initial eye-rolling while picking up this book up at the library, I showed it to my (almost 5 year old) son and he immediately wanted to read it. The story text demands that you read it in a loud, ominous voice. And it is entertaining for kids. It's currently his favorite book. And the illustrations are great, especially Tyrannosaurus Trux on the cover. I see that there's a movi...more
Dear Son:
I want to caution you about this author's abominable paleontology / anthropology. His grasp of scientific facts is truly lamentable for an adult and inexcusable for a published author, and I am sorry for exposing you to it at such a formative age.
To set things straight: in reality, the dinotrux lived millions of years before human beings, not alongside them.
Also, I doubt that the book's artwork was really painted onto scraped hides, as claimed by the copyright page.

If you have a child that is passionate about dinosaurs and cars of all makes and models this may be the perfect book for them. I however could care less about cars as long as they go vrooom when I put the key in, so this book wasn't one I would be overly excited to share with young readers. Hello! According to the Jetson's we should have flying cars at this point. When is telaportation going to finally come about???... feeling rather cheated here in 2011.
I read this to my 1st graders today and they LOVED it! The class is made up of mostly boys and the combination of dinosaurs and trucks made it a definite hit for them! The use of every day trucks combined with dinosaur names such as the Craneosaurus, Dozeratops, and the Tyrannosaurus Trux just to name a few made for a great reading. I believe they liked the Firesaurus best! Can you guess what kind of truck that is? :-)
"The artwork for this book was created using bearskins and stone knives." --publication page. LOL! So, does combining two of little boys' favorite topics into one make for an even better book? Could be. Fans of dinos, trucks, or even Transformers will enjoy this one. I got a kick out of the idea that the Dinotrux "shed their teeth, their toenails, and their misbehaving ways," and evolved into the demure trucks of today.
I absolutely love the illustrations in this book! It is a fun way to introduce dinosaurs to students in kindergarten and first grade. You could extend this book by allowing children to make their own combinations of dinosaurs or animals with different vehicles or other objects that they know. Students can either build a model of their imaginary creature or draw a picture and describe it.
The conceit of the book is that years ago, in the time of cavemen, prehistoric precursors to modern day heavy use vehicles roamed the earth as dinotrucks with names that are amalgamations of dinosaur and vehicle names. It's not a bad idea, but the story is a little unclear and hard to follow for a young (almost 4) reader and the illustrations are a bit muddy.
For fans of Transformers and other truck and dinosaur related themes this should be loads of fun. Very gritty drawing style with prominent sketch lines crossing and adding a lot of texture to the page. Short sentences describing the actual dinotrux with lots of scattered subtitles from both cavemen and the dinotrux like "Gobble! Gobble!" and "Everybody run!"
I find these "What are two things that kids like? Let's mash them together!" books a little gimmicky. Thing is, sometimes Gimmicks really work. I like Dinotrux. The illustrations are detailed and the kids love them, plus their are jokes for the adults (Delivery Truck-a-saurus sleep when they should be delivering). Sometimes you gotta have a gimmick.
This is a weird, trippy book explorating the evolution of dinotrux (dinosaur-truck hybrids). Galls' illustrations are everything you would want in an action picture. The text is weak, but since the whole point is Galls' pictures of dinotrux, it's not really important. Kids will want to pour over the pictures, not the text.

Dinotrux breaks the mold by bringing together kids’ two favorite themes: dinosaurs and trucks! Ever wonder what trucks and cars were really like billions of years ago? They weren’t as nice as they are today. Chris Gall once again amazes with his attention to detail as he guides kids through the evolution of Dinotrux!
I can't belive no one thought of combining dinosaus and trucks sooner! This has exciting, bold illustrations and features funny comments from cavemen. However, in some places, the text--especially some of the names of the Dinotrux--is a bit awkward. Still a great book to recommend to boys!
