Offering new hope to millions, this new nutritional approach to diabetes will dramatically alter the way we think about treating the disease

Until now, most health professionals have considered diabetes a one-way street. Once you developed it, you were stuck with it--and you could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart...more

I have finished this book but have been on the program about two weeks. The changes are already noticeable and encouraging. I have lost some pounds, and my blood pressure is much, much lower than it was before I started. I don't see much effect in my glucose readings, but as the fat goes down, the weight goes down, and as the weight falls, so will the blood sugar measurements. I have been aware of my type 2 diabetes for maybe 3.5 years, and having attempted some incremental changes, with corresp...more

I have type 2 diabetes and am overweight. That puts me in the target audience for this book. The book is not really for type 1 diabetes, which seems to be an autoimmune disorder and not reversible.
I rated this book as only 3 starts because I think the doctor glosses over the difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes, and also seems to downplay the impact of blood sugar spikes after meals. It is probably true that getting the fat out of your body will allow your body to process carbohydrates (sug...more

Although very repetitive, this book is very informative for diabetics and really anyone thinking of switching to a vegan diet. I highly recommend it for people who have diabetes and have struggled in the past with different diets to bring their blood sugar down. The author of this book is a physician who has actually performed research studies which have been published in peer reviewed research journals and hence shares with the reader his findings and the findings from other research studies as...more

I'm a soon-to-be former type 2 diabetic, couch potato (those of us who read a lot), who has been on this vegan diet for the past 46 days. The results: I have LOTS of energy. I no longer have cravings for meat, sugar, dairy products or fast foods. I've lost 22 pounds- 2 pant sizes, and I feel GREAT!! I exercise: brisk 40 minute walk every day with a little jogging up the steep inclines. This diet is also recommened by Dr Dean Ornish who claims this vegan diet reverses heart problems. I can believ...more

I don't have diabetes. I won this book as part of a package in a fund raising auction.

I found it to be very interesting.

One current theory for the genesis of food allergies is that "leaky guts", porous intestines leak out proteins from our food before those proteins have been broken down into amino acids. These proteins then get out into the blood where the immune system is alerted to them, thus triggering an autoimmune response.

Infants, whose digestive systems are not fully matured, are predisp...more

I'll start out by disclosing that I'm not diabetic, and don't have a diabetic in the family. I am, however, interested in the way the foods we eat change our overall health. (Forks over Knives and China Study were my gateway titles.)

Reading this book was worth the time investment simply for the discussion regarding "intramyocellular lipids", type 2 diabetes, and mitochondria. Putting this into everyday language: when your fat consumption is too high, your body stores fat inside your muscle cell...more

I'm not Diabetic (or a Vegan) but my Aunt told me about this book. I think it does a great job explaining all the body functions for carbs, sugar, and veg. I did learn a few thing, why I read books I'm not sure about, but he takes a strong stand against animal protein. In the book he does a great job of referencing studies and has a long list of references. My only problem with the book is around animal protein is hard on the kidneys. I tried to reference the studies and couldn't find details. I...more

I found this book a well-written and well put together package overall, but it was very similar to other books Dr. Barnard has written. Basically, it recommends a diet that is vegan, low-fat and high-fiber. The concession to the diabetes aspect is that there is a greater discussion of the GI index and a recommendation that you choose foods lower on the GI index.

Dr. Barnard also states that it is not necessary to be a great cook to follow his plan, and that he himself dislikes cooking, but then t...more

79 million people in this country are pre-diabetic. 14 million have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Dr. Barnard lays out a program that will help you change the course of your life and keep you off drugs. If you are at risk for Type II Diabetes, have high cholesterol, heart disease, metabolic syndrome or have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, read this book. It can save you from a lot of heartache.

I do not suffer diabetes, but my mother-in-law does. This was informative to understand how diabetes is tested, how the body becomes diabetic, and how food can cause, and reverse it.

I gave this two stars because it was not as concise as the other Barnard books I have read. You can learn about the relation of food and diabetes with other Barnard books. I would start with the 21-day kickstart program of his.

A wonderful book suggestion (and gift) from my sister. Even if you don't fully embrace the vegan program suggested here, this book is wonderful for helping you to understand the science behind diabetes and how to take active steps to control its progression and even reverse it. I have incorporated a lot of the changes suggested in this book and have seen incredible results in weight loss, decrease in neuropathy, and decrease in blood glucose levels. I haven't gone vegetarian yet, but I have dram...more

This is an excellent book and a MUST read for anybody who suffers from diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2). The information is well-documented and the steps to follow to become healthy and diabetic-free are easy. I refer to the book several times for recipes and tips. As a result of reading this book and following the steps, I am proud to say that I am now a non-diabetic.

tough to know what to think. Finding it hard to imagine going completely
vegan like this, especially for hubby. Also am confused by his recommendation
to eat soy since I hear so many bad things about it. Overall though, like the
message about less animal products, more veggies, fruits, legumes and whole grains
and copied a few recipes to try.

Excellent tome on diet and the ability to reverse a diabetic diagnosis. Hoping to put these practices in place and continue to improve my nutritional lifestyle and beat this pain in my rear. Laid a foundation based bad decisions, now with this guide I hope to rip out the foundation and rebuild a new temple!

I haven't read the whole book yet. I bought one copy for my mom while she was visiting, and I read through parts of it. It includes the results of recent studies (this book was published in 2006) that show how a low-fat vegan diet can reverse many health problems including diabetes. The book also answers the commonly asked questions like "How do you get your protein? And why low-fat? Don't you need a certain amount of fat in your diet? And what about calcium?" etc etc. I want to read the whole b...more

Dr. Barnard recommends a low fat vegan lifestyle to reverse diabetes.

You have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this book.....either you or someone you know has diabetes, you're interested in diet/health, and/or you are exploring the possibilities of a vegan diet.

Highly recommend for anyone with diabetic issues. Solid science proving that you can reverse diabetes without drugs or loss of limb!

My parents recommended this book and I really got a lot from it. I would recommend this book to anyone even if you don't have diabetes.

I've been flirting with a vegan diet this week, and the results are already amazing. My blood sugars are lower, I have more energy, and I'm sleeping better.

It's going to be challenging, because I'm not a fan of most legumes, but I'm giving it the old college try.
Ginger Averitt
The advice in this book works. If you're willing to become vegan, you can control your sugar!
Drew
I think this could be a winning strategy for many people who are willing to make dramatic changes to their diet. I don't think it's the only way to reverse diabetes and it seems like he demonizes all animal products which may be more related to his animal rights advocacy than pure scientific interpretation. Still, good and readable, and likely a great instrument to the right audience.

My life might be forever changed!

11/12: I've been doing this for 2 weeks... can I just tell you? It SO works. My doctor is astounded. I had my doubts at first because towards the end of the book, the author tends to focus more on weight loss than lower sugars. I was like, oh, that's not my problem. I am a convert. My life IS changed. Not for everyone... requires a lot of self-discipline. But hey, if you're following (or trying to follow) the ADA diet, presumeably you are disciplined.
Wendy
I am going to give this a try because it looks like everyone should try this diet even if not diabetic, but I think shopping for this in Russia is going to be difficult !

The best health book I've read, period. This clear, concise explanation of how and why your body rejects certain foods and thereby develops diabetes helped me understand how to control my diabetes for years with Dr. Barnard's diet recommendations. I highly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes or anyone in danger of developing diabetes.
Anita
I found his theory about fat blocking cells from metabolizing glucose an interesting one and quite plausible. And, while I agree with many of his suggestions, there were so many obvious
contradictions and untruths in his writing that he lost credibility.
Deb
I am interested in avoiding the diabetes path I know so many are on. My blood sugar numbers are still good, so I don't think I'll be eliminating meat and dairy just yet, but I imagine my digestive track would thank me if I could. Interesting to read how the cells and arteries can recover when animal fat is eliminated.
Jaidab
I do not have diabetes, but it runs in my family. Although I may not 100% agree with everything in Dr. Barnard's book, I still think it's an excellent read. Dr.Barnard always supports the information he provides. I also like that he's really good at putting medical mumbo jumbo into simple, easily-understood terms.

Good principles, but a bit extreme for little kids with diabetes, Type I patients. I'm leery of anyone who advocates going completely vegan, especially for growing children, or promotes one cause or research factor for a condition to the exclusion of all others.
