This book was pure torture for me. I was told that it was a classic and a "must-read". I regret reading this book. I can appreciate the author's attempt to describe the characters surroundings, but most of the time it just felt excessive and Perez-Galdos just seems to be talking down to the reader throughout the book. I'm not saying it's not good, it just isn't for me.
----
The saddest book I've read in my life. Marianela's unfortunate and pathetic life and heartbreak is enough to scare the desire to read in school children.

I read this book in high school en espanol when I was 16 and was so excited to find it on goodreads. A perfect first Spanish read for this impressionable & romantic girl. Very sad but thought provoking as well. Made me think about true beauty and where it lies.
Triste. Es la palabra perfecta para describirlo. Se queda con 3.5
Demasiado fuerte y triste para mi.
Simplemente algo más de realidad. Dura, horrible y realista realidad.
Un gran libro. Con un final triste, pero lindo. Diferente.
Solamente, impactante.

Not the edition I read.
Even though I was "forced" to read this one for school, I quite liked it, and was disappointed when it ended, I wanted more. Sure, it's not one of the greatest pieces of literature, but it's not bad.

Enjoyed the fantastic, surreal description of a dark and depressing world. The dialogues however did not grab me (although they are true to the romantic tragedy). Interesting at any rate.
Saddest book ever. Read it when I was 14 I don't think I recovered.
***

has long descriptions :D
really enjoyed the dialogues...and this book really makes you think about reality and illusion.. about peoples change in decisions.

it's a good boook and actually it's kind of surprising because of the end of the book avery should rea it!!
Personally I would prefer not to give this novel a single star.
They may say that it's a story of unrequited love that stands out from all the novels of that era for its realism ..... but I think there are better ways to become depressed.

I loved this romantic/cruelty(hehehe).....novel
Es un libro bueno pero muy triste...
Triste desenlace de la Nela.
Very Good Book
Muy emotivo
triste novela
Beautiful, beautiful, I loved it from the very first moment, the language and style are great, but again, I think you need to read it in Spanish. A very romantic tale of an impossible love which never fails to arrest our imagination. The plot provokes an inevitable sad ending written by one of the best Spanish writers.
The first time I cried reading a novel was while reading Marianela. The real meaning of love is described in this book.
Great story. Heart wrenching and insightful. It's all about what it means to have self worth. Easy read, hard to put down.

It was cute. I really don't understand the ending though. I guess it's just a typical Spanish book, though?
A real tearjerker.
