I'd first heard about this series through a documentary about Japan's geek culture. Well, to be more exact, I'd heard about the games. Mesmerized by the brief glimpse I'd seen, I tracked the series down... and discovered that it wasn't available in the US. Luckily for me, I did discover that it was going to be released in both manga & anime formats eventually. One book later, I'm hooked.

The beginning of the manga is deceptively peaceful. Keiichi Maebara has come to the small town of Hinamiza...more

***This is my review for volumes 1 and 2 both***

Summary: Keiichi loves his new town and school. His classmates are extra-friendly, incredibly adorable girls who dote on him. However, he quickly learns that his town has a violent past and that his friends are not as sweet as they seem.

Verdict: Awesome! But, uh, maybe don't read it at bedtime like I did.

Yay!: This series is seriously scary. It starts off exactly like a typical harem manga, complete with fan service, but the tension begins to build...more

I read the sound novel rather than the manga. Manga volume 1-2 is for novel episode 1, that is why I put 2 books in here replacing sound book episode 1 that I read. And this book is really something.

When you read it it seem like you are the main character in the book and all the chill come to you as well. The story itself is very good since it combine folktale, mystery, detective, murderer, dual personality, it is very various idea to support the main idea.

The first book is Opening (Onikakushi-h...more

Rather than the strange mix of shojo frivolity and creepiness of the first volume, this volume was a straight-up horrific gorefest. Keiichi knows that the village is possessed by demons and that he can't trust his new friends, especially when one of them cooks him a treat with a sewing needle inside, and a white van nearly runs him over. He decides to start carrying around a baseball bat for his own protection... then discovers it belonged to one of the "demoned away." Then the girls start with...more

I almost cried myself to sleep last night... I was horrified. Never before have I been more frightened and disturbed by a piece of literature. And that is exactly why this book gets five stars. It does as it intends. And though it scared me and probably psychologically shocked me for life... I loved it! It is incredibly well-written and the depth of the story is so eerie and engaging!

Psychological horror that has no qualms about getting into your head. Emotional moments combine with gore galore to create a scary little romp that's madder than a hatter. The end of this arc especially was incredibly sad and disturbing. Higurashi is a very well done series, but it only gets more freaky from here. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Still creepy, and the mystery was not resolved even though this was the end of the arc!

...
I'm scared.

...
It was very good though.
Mel
No one ever stays dead in this series
Ellee
Psychological horror in manga form. Very well done. :) Are there curses, demons, ghosts? Or is it all in the victims' minds?
