If you are a fan of this series you will probably find that it de3livers all the goodies Tannenbaum is known for, with not too many of the drawbacks. The goodies: wonderful Dickensian characters of all sorts, each more idiosyncratic than the last. The series centers around Butch Karp, currently the DA of the fictional New York City ( as a seperate district equivalent to Manhattan it is really fictional). He is tall, Jewish, funny, twice as smart as you and surrounded by family and friends who ad...more

Tanenbaum is a master at creating and involving odd characters into his novels. This has been the main appeal to me of his novels. These characters make repeat appearances, sometimes appearing so often that if it was a television series "special guest star" would not appear.

I have also appreciated Tanenbaum's attempt to explore thematic issues such as the use of force to protect women being stalked or abused. This novel is no different, in fact, the entire novel is almos...more

This was my first Tanenbaum book and I found it very confusing! Ther were at least 4 different plot lines from a court trial about a mother murdering her children to an Islamic terrorist plot. I wish he had just stuck with the trial as I found it very interesting!!

As usual Tanenbaum gives a good story and holds ones interest. He also keeps his stories in line with the real world

I'm very disappointed. In fact, I'll probably wait for the next one to come out in paperback, and probably even wait to buy it from the used bookstore.

I'm getting tired of the larger-than-life over-the-top plotlines, ever growing conspiracy webs, and political rhetoric. Its time to get back to what made me love these characters and this series -- solving a mystery and prosecuting a bad guy.

If Tanenbaum wants to write a book dedicated to his political views and the gener...more

By now you have probably guessed that I like legal thrillers. I have read most of Tanenbaum's Butch Karp series (they seem to go on and on.) He always makes them interesting and Karp's off-the-wall wife always makes for a new twist. Boy, I wish I could think up a character that would be as durable as Butch Karp, or Alan Gregory, or Lucas Davenport, or Oliver Stone, or any number of others. If you only got 20 cents a book, by the time you sold a series of 20 to a few milion faithful readers, ...more

Reader ended up throwing this book across the room. The author lost all credibility when he couldn't even get the word for the Muslim woman's headdress correctly spelled. Author kept referring to it as the hajib" when it should have been the "hijab." Plot was ridiculous. Amazon's reviews of this book tell it all. Evidently, Tanenbaum writes with ghost writers and a new one came on board with this book.

Great story. I do like books that have imaginative pieces to them... I liked the setting for the book, like a surreal NY city. and I liked how the story was woven with news from today. obviously this is a series..and sometimes references to things known by previously-read books was a little irritating...but I had a hard time putting this down. Definitely want to read more.

I have read and enjoyed all of Robert Tanenbaum's books. I had no doubt that I would enjoy this one. Wrong. Maybe it was Charles Leggett's narration, which grated on me. Maybe I just didn't like the book. But about 1/3 of the way through it, I decided that life was too short to listen to another eight or so hours of this one.

Butch Carp, NYC DA and wife, Marlene...Muslim terrorists try to blow up Wall Street computer...describes all of the fail safes and safeguards against Wall Street crash and hedge funds...written well before failures of summer 2008–supposedly this kind of thing couldn’t happen !!!!!!!

If you like fast moving, testosterone laden novels this is for you. Tanenbaum is really good in this novel and he has written a good one here. His cast of characters are a compelling as ever. It is a fast-paced thriller that is a fun if escapiis read.
Holly
great read as usual .... none of the good guys get hurt, you always learn something interesting (in this case, some Jewish history and some interesting history of Wall Street) and it keeps you amused.

I'm not sure why I bothered finishing this book. So disappointing. Earlier books in this series were great, but he no longer has a ghost writer and it really shows. Was there even an editor on this?

I am putting this on hold because I discovered that I have to read several that were written before this one and, for some reason, I want to read them in order.
Kathy
The courtroom scenes are interesting to me. The family dynamics are interesting. He has gotten way too involved in middle eastern intrigue--six million characters.

I had read that this one was better than the last few, and I do agree, but I think it could have been 100-150 pages shorter and been even better.

I wish it were possible to give books zero stars... Negative stars would be even better.
Ruth
ok. too many wide spread threads merge to be believable but still readable.
Lori
not believable at all.... contrived, but always a good story teller.
Jegdsw
love the old characters but plot was long and not as exciting
Pnorman811
Horrible inclusion of Jihadists into a court room drama. Yuck.
Cheryl
I love this author. He has a twisted sense of humor.
