Serious language and sex in this book, but story moves along and it's interesting. Stone sees newscaster, Sasha Nijinsky, fall from her balcony and ends up leading the investigation.

The main character in the book, Stone Barrington, is not your typical New York cop. He went to law school but became interested in police work during his stint in school. As a foodie and oenophile, and with his white collar background, he's also supposed to be somewhat more "cultured" than the average cop, although this doesn't keep him from condoning the use of offensive, negative terms for minorities and lesbians.

In this Stuart Woods book, we find Stone Barrington in his first outing. He is a Lt. Detective on limited duty due to a bullet he took to his knee and has decided after an evening out to walk home in order to get some exercise to it when, in a case of being in either the right place at the right time, or wrong place at the wrong time, he witnesses a woman falling from a building. It turns out to be a rather famous TV personality who was scheduled to take her place as a co-anchor on a prestigious

This may have been the last good Stone Barrington book. It actually had a plot with several twists and suspense leading up to the final pages with the final revelations. In this book, Stone was still a police detective and hadn't adopted the smug wealthy lifestyle which becomes the consummate profile of later Stone books. He actually experienced a brief look at financial disaster, and entered the book wearing ordinary clothing. His adoption of expensive clothing and absorbing the finer lifestyle

This is the first in Wood's Stone Barrington series. Before this, I'd read all the Holly Barker series, excluding the last one. Stone's appeared in a few of the Holly books and I think the Stone series is Woods' longest. So, I was hoping for great things with this one. I was disappointed. There were so many things wrong with this book. Number one was the enormous homosexual hate. Now, MAYBE you can lump it all in with the corrupt police department, but the fact is that when Stone's friend

Solid mystery. I actually read the book this time instead of listening to it. It was an easy read with nice short chapters. I like it that way. Easier to handle just one more chapter before falling asleep.
This is Stone Barrington's first appearance in a series written by Stuart Woods. He is a detective second class just coming back from a serious knee injury. He gets caught up in a mystery involving a celebrity news anchor when he sees her plunge from the roof.

I don't normally read mysteries or crime thrillers, but I picked up New York Dead based on a friend's recommendation. To be honest, at first I wasn't thrilled about reading it, because I can usually figure out early on in the story who's guilty.
This book was no different.
However, what made me really enjoy this book was watching the characters trying to solve the crime. The entire time I was reading, I kept thinking, "you idiot... you've got your person right there!" More...

This is the first book in a series featuring Stone Barrington, a New York City policeman. A large part of the book seemed to be spent on developing Stone's character and giving bits of his history. That was OK with me as Stone is a likeable character and I'll look forward to finding out more about him as the series progresses. In this volume, the story centered around whether or not a TV anchorwoman was murdered. I felt that this theme got a little murky at times when the story shifted to St

This is a rare re-read for me. I read this book originally when I was 16 or so, and I remember enjoying it immensely. One scene in paricular was rather morbid and grotesque, and it stuck with me all these years. Upon re-reading, the scene wasn't nearly as fascinating as I remembered. In fact, the entire book was somewhat of a dissapointment. The writing style left a lot to be desired, but it's a fast, easy read and I enjoyed getting reacquainted with the main character, Stone Barrington. I plan

I've been looking for a series of crime novels to read, and somehow I've never read Woods' Barrington before. I started with book 1. It took a little getting used to as the book is somewhat dated (pub. 1991), but I felt it was important to start at the beginning. I'm looking forward to working through this series, as Barrington is an engaging and likable character somewhat out of the ordinary in crime/mystery series.

This is the first Stone Barrington book. The name sounds more like a character in a steamy romance novel. Barrington is a New York cop recovering from a knee injury when he witnesses a beautiful news anchor fall from her high rise window. Corrupt cops, bed hopping beauties and morbid morticians abound. This is the first I've read by this author. For some reason, the writing reminded me of Mickey Spillane.

Stuart Woods reminds me of Sidney Sheldon in that he's not that great of a writer, but he's a very good storyteller. Stone Barrington is sort of a James Bond - if Bond were a lawyer, meaning Barrington gets pretty much any woman he wants, he likes the finer things in life, and he doesn't have to worry about money. A good novel.

Also known for his provocative stories and relentless pacing, Stuart Woods has much to offer Grisham fans. New York Dead is a good place to start. While there are suspense, action, and plot twists, there's also more sex and violence than one finds in Grisham. Readers who can tolerate this might find Woods a good choice.

This is the first Stuart Woods book I have read and now I am a fan of murder mysteries. Stone Barrington is a second class New York detective who also went to law school. I liked how Woods slowly unfolded the plot and brought new elements of the characters. The book was a fast read and entertaining.

Stuart Woods was recommended to me by a library patron. I was looking for something new for my husband to read. He tore through this one pretty quick and I think he is on book #8 in the series. It's a fun series kind of like Robert B. Parker's Spenser books, and the TV series Rockford Files and Magnum P.I.

I really enjoyed this book. It was essentially a murder-mystery, but with some twists I have never encountered in other books. I loved the main character, Stone Barrington and plan to read more of Woods' books featuring Stone. It's definitely worth reading if you like murder-mystery stories.

What is this world coming to! An well educated man who would rather be a cop than a lawyer? And then a lady falls off a balcony several floor up and lives? And then he has be become the lawyer he never wanted to be? Audible.com caught me with this one! I think I have become a follower!

Wanted to go back and read from the beginning of the series to make sure I got all the Stone Barrington books. Well you can definately tell this is an early book. Though I liked the ending more than the rest of the book, I still have to give it a low rating.
It was nice to meet the characters and finally see how everything got started.

A decent start to a new series. File this one under a guilty pleasure. A couple of semi-predictable twists made this one a fun read. However, it seemed like there was a sub plot line that felt like filler. Enjoyable enough to pick up on the next few in this long running series.

Very Good; Continuing character: Stone Barrington (first in series); Stone sees a woman fall from 12 stories, and as he moves from poilce to being a lawyer he tries to figure out suicide or murder, not helped by the fact the body has disappeared

this guys older books are fairly entertaing, the characters a bit thin and more recent books he shows that he has become a dirty old man. Mostly about how much his characters get laid. But earlier books, like this, have more story

After reading so many Stone Barrington novels, I finally got to read the 1st one. He is Dino's partner, but gets out of the police force and becomes a lawyer. Sex, deception and intrigue as usual. It was good to see how it all started.

Fun - but then I like simple detective stories for the quick read. I'll definitely read more of the Stone Barrington series by Stuart Woods. He reminds me of J.P. Beaumont by J.A. Jance. I've read all of the Beaumont series.

Have you tried Stuart Woods? He is similar to David Baldacci with complex, fast-paced political and legal thrillers. New York Dead is the first book of the long and popular Stone Barrington series.

This was my first Stuart Woods novel and I found it to be very good. He has a very basic writing style but he writes a good story. I found Stone Barrington to be a very interesting character.

My love affair with Stone began here and even though I've always seen him as a more handsome version of Chris Noth, Stuart insists he's blondish- so ... Bradley Cooper is my vote.

This is a 2.5 for me. Average storyline, average characters. I don't know that there's anyone in the cast of characters you're going to fall in love with to keep you hooked. I would NOT recommend this on audio, just because I didn't appreciate the narrator's "voices." They sometimes verged on being silly, and his voice for Stone was on the nasal side, which makes it difficult to imagine Stone as the refined handsome man in uniform he was supposed to be.
Still, I like the More...

First in the Stone Barrington detective series. I've enjoyed all the books in this series as many are set in Manhattan. The references to noted places in Manhattan and CT are fun to read.
