This is the first potty training book I've ever read. When I potty trained my numero uno, I just tried a combination of what I heard worked and then figured out along the way what worked for us. I figured I would read this and see if I got any advice I hadn't heard already. While there were a few good tips (like place a bathroom rug on a couch for your son to sit on while he is in underwear so that if he has an accident your couch won't be ruined), there were also things that I am not about t...more
As a parent, the best thing to do with your kids is trust your instincts. Sometimes though, it's nice to have your parental instincts reinforced by the advice of others. I've opted for a slow, steady approach to potty training and it's nice to see that type of approach has been successful enough for others to write a book about it.
Having finished it, there were some things I liked, others that I didn't. I really liked the way it constantly reinforced working with your child to pot...more

A quick read. Takes you through the steps of potty training from introducing the idea to your little one all the way through some of the bigger obstacles you may face. The approach is what I would call "casual" potty training. Actually it's an exact opposite approach from the "Potty training in a day" regime, which can be traumatic for your little one and you. There is no guilt in having your child where a diaper or pull ups when out and about. You can leave the house while p...more
I reserve the right to change my rating later if this doesn't work.
Nico is on the verge of being ready to start this process. He will tell us sometimes, but usually during or just after he pees. He will sit on his potty, fully clothed, for pretend time while Elmo sits on his. He even tries to sit on Elmo's little potty. Of course, he loves to barge on his parents potty breaks, dump his poop-poop out of his diapers into the toilet and flush the the big potty. If he can get his hands on...more

While this book does gives a decent "casual" approach to potty training, I found the book poorly written. A lot of the information I thought was completely pointless (like how to handle having your toddler in a public bathroom stall with you while YOU use the toilet.)You definitely don't have to read even half the book to understand the method.
I found a different approach much better for my son. I can see this method being more useful when you have multiple children. There ...more

Since I only have experience being a girl and potty training girls, I was excited to see a book specific for boys. I did learn some things about little winkies that seem like common sense but I might not have thought of that were helpful. I did not agree with some of the basics, such as practicing aim into a plastic cup! I also do not use "potties", I find them dirty and then you have to retrain to sit on the toilet since public restrooms do not have training potties and I am NOT c...more
good tips but this book really bugs me because the author acts like it is impossible to train a child under 20 months old and near impossible under 2 1/2 years. she thinks at least 3 should be the good age. whatever!
If you can get past Ms Fertleman's sweeing gendered statements about the nature of boys, the book has some decent tips. Or what I think might eventually prove to be interesting tips.
I'm a bit skeptical about this method. It's hard to rate the book without actually trying it, though.
Nothing earth shattering. We are learning there is no formula or magic set of instructions for potty training. Very individual to the child. We also skipped the potty altogether and went straight to using the toilet.
