Andy Rash’s, Are You A Horse? is a humorous picture book that is recommended for a read aloud. The main character is a boy named Roy who receives a saddle for his birthday and being as he is a cowboy we can assume that he knows what to do with it, but instead the funny story has us discovering that Roy doesn’t know what a saddle is, what to do with it and where to find a horse. He then goes on a journey to look for a horse. The story is a lively adventure full of guesses that will have the stud...more
Although it is a bit long for some of the 2-year-olds who come in for storytime, it seems to be a dependable attention-grabber, with enough silliness to bridge some of the gaps in story comprehension with the younger kids, and not too simple to maintain the attention of the older pre-schoolers. A silly animal-identifying story about a boy who receives a saddle for his birthday and sets out to find a horse. Adults love the humour, and kids love all the voices you can do for the animals. Some of t...more
I love this one too much, I will make sure I fit it into some storytime somewhere. I love the colorful illustrations, the humor in the text and illustrations, and the "investigating" of different animals. But it's all for the ending. I laugh each time.
3/2/10 & 3/4/10: It worked well both times. I know both groups enjoyed it. But I learned to ask more questions to the Thursday group and I think they got the ending better than the Tuesday group. There were more laughs any way--and not just fro...more

Roy's friends give him a saddle for his birthday. Great! But, what's a horse?
A trip through Texas (right?) where Roy meets all sorts of animals. With each animal, he gains a little more knowledge of what a horse is and isn't. Cute and a little silly. Great use of panels for the sloth page.
Can you suspend belief that he doesn't know what a horse is? If yes, you'll like it.
Readaloud notes: Worked better with preschool than kindergarten. With a little work, could be worked into a lesson.

A cowboy recieves a saddle for his birthday. Now he needs to find a horse. Unfortunately, he doesn't know what a horse is, so he goes for a walk and asks questions to objects and animals he meets along the way.

This book has many repetitive phrases, so it is easy for younger or less fluent readers. It is also tremendously fun. The journey of the poor cowboy builds on itself and helps readers see the progression of his quest to find a horse. The illustrations are lively and colorful and the book was a pleasure to read.
I loved this book and so did my husband and twin five-year old girls. It struck our funny bones and we laughed out loud at Roy and his naive cowboy ways. The last page was perfection.
Great sense of humor and the illustrations were simple, yet bold and fun.
I'd definitely consider buying this one for my shelf or as a gift.

A great book for preschoolers and toddlers, if you paperclipped a few pages. Roy gets a saddle for his birthday but no horse to ride. He sees lots of animals and asks if they are horses, such as a pig, a snake, and a zebra. Great for storytime because kids can make noises of all the animals Roy sees.
I love this book because it offers inferring skills. The author keeps the reader guessing throughout the text and leaves a surprise ending. Children will enjoy the tale of a cowboy on the search for a horse.
This is a fun book where a cowboy gets a saddle and starts to try and find a horse which he has never seen before. Cute and fun for all of those cowboy units. Ages 3+
Roy gets a saddle for his birthday and goes in search of a horse. He encounters a snake, a crab, a pig, and even a zebra. Once he sees a horse he looks it over and makes sure it has all the characteristics he has learned it should have. Characteristics like having four legs, friendly, doesn’t lay eggs, and fast with no stripes. In the end he still gets mixed up and puts the saddle on his back instead of the horses.

Very fun book, would be a great readaloud -- watch out for the visual joke and surprise ending!
Great book and the kids all loved the ending! I thought that it was pretty funny too.
