Andy Rash’s, Are You A Horse? is a humorous picture book that is recommended for a read aloud. The main character is a boy named Roy who receives a saddle for his birthday and being as he is a cowboy we can assume that he knows what to do with it, but instead the funny story has us discovering that Roy doesn’t know what a saddle is, what to do with it and where to find a horse. He then goes on a journey to look for a horse. The story is a lively adventure full of guesses that will have the stud...more

Although it is a bit long for some of the 2-year-olds who come in for storytime, it seems to be a dependable attention-grabber, with enough silliness to bridge some of the gaps in story comprehension with the younger kids, and not too simple to maintain the attention of the older pre-schoolers. A silly animal-identifying story about a boy who receives a saddle for his birthday and sets out to find a horse. Adults love the humour, and kids love all the voices you can do for the animals. Some of t...more

I love this one too much, I will make sure I fit it into some storytime somewhere. I love the colorful illustrations, the humor in the text and illustrations, and the "investigating" of different animals. But it's all for the ending. I laugh each time.

3/2/10 & 3/4/10: It worked well both times. I know both groups enjoyed it. But I learned to ask more questions to the Thursday group and I think they got the ending better than the Tuesday group. There were more laughs any way--and not just fro...more

Roy's friends give him a saddle for his birthday. Great! But, what's a horse?

A trip through Texas (right?) where Roy meets all sorts of animals. With each animal, he gains a little more knowledge of what a horse is and isn't. Cute and a little silly. Great use of panels for the sloth page.

Can you suspend belief that he doesn't know what a horse is? If yes, you'll like it.

Readaloud notes: Worked better with preschool than kindergarten. With a little work, could be worked into a lesson.

A cowboy recieves a saddle for his birthday. Now he needs to find a horse. Unfortunately, he doesn't know what a horse is, so he goes for a walk and asks questions to objects and animals he meets along the way.

Rash shares a silly tale that audiences of all ages will enjoy. The phrase, "are you a horse," is repeated throughout the book, so it is easy to bring in audience participation.

Theme: Horses
Additional themes: cowboys, western, questions

Reviewed from a library copy.

This book has many repetitive phrases, so it is easy for younger or less fluent readers. It is also tremendously fun. The journey of the poor cowboy builds on itself and helps readers see the progression of his quest to find a horse. The illustrations are lively and colorful and the book was a pleasure to read.

I loved this book and so did my husband and twin five-year old girls. It struck our funny bones and we laughed out loud at Roy and his naive cowboy ways. The last page was perfection.

Great sense of humor and the illustrations were simple, yet bold and fun.

I'd definitely consider buying this one for my shelf or as a gift.

This is about a young man who gets a saddle for his birhtday. He walks around and aks all sorts of animals if they are a horse or not? Then in the end he finds a horse, but I'm not going to spoil the end. Very funny book for children to read.

Bold illustrations and a funny story that revolves around a cowboy with a saddle looking for a horse to go with it. A little on the long side for the younger set, but could skip some pages and/or make into a shortened felt story.

My audience (25 five year olds) liked it well enough. I did, too. It was funny, finishing with a last page grabber (common in picture books). But overall? Not one I'm going to purchase or use again and again in story times.

I love this book. It is funny, clever, and can teach children science and writing objectives at the same time. Boys and girls will love this book. My daughter liked picking out and naming all the animals and she's two!

We read this for a bedtime story with our 5 yr old son. He liked all the animals. Daddy and I loved the ending. I've recommended it to my friends with children and a couple without children because it's that fun.

A great book for preschoolers and toddlers, if you paperclipped a few pages. Roy gets a saddle for his birthday but no horse to ride. He sees lots of animals and asks if they are horses, such as a pig, a snake, and a zebra. Great for storytime because kids can make noises of all the animals Roy sees.
Jenna
I love this book because it offers inferring skills. The author keeps the reader guessing throughout the text and leaves a surprise ending. Children will enjoy the tale of a cowboy on the search for a horse.

Hilarious. Aaron was reading this to Ethan and as he turned to the last page and started laughing, I just knew what had happened. Ethan loved learning all the creatures as Roy learns about horses.

If you read this aloud with the right inflection, little ones will want to hear it again and again. This has a nice connection with lessons on living/non living and animal classification.

Really odd book, similar to Are You My Mother? This book explores what a cowboy needs after getting a saddle as a gift for his birthday. I am reviewing new pbs from this publisher.

Roy gets a saddle for his birthday w/ a tag that says "find a horse" He looks all over the animal kingdom until he finally finds a horse. Surprise ending that kids will love.
Amy Brown
A boy gets a saddle but doesn't know what a horse is. He asks a wagon, a snake, a lion etc. if they are a horse but they aren't so he keeps looking. Funny toddler/preschool book.
Gray
So goofy. He is in a desert but runs into a zebra, lion and crab? Couldn't he have stuck to animals that live in a desert? A bit odd, but we did giggle at the end.
Robin Rousu
Higher thinking skills, simple story, much silliness, and a great surprise ending. Loved it! Perfect for preschool story time.

Great read aloud for younger students-- very funny. Older students could use premise of book to write their own similar story.
Zack
Fun book with a nice surprise ending. As I've mentioned before, any picture book that includes a sloth is fine by me!
Molly
This is a fun book where a cowboy gets a saddle and starts to try and find a horse which he has never seen before. Cute and fun for all of those cowboy units. Ages 3+

Roy gets a saddle for his birthday and goes in search of a horse. He encounters a snake, a crab, a pig, and even a zebra. Once he sees a horse he looks it over and makes sure it has all the characteristics he has learned it should have. Characteristics like having four legs, friendly, doesn’t lay eggs, and fast with no stripes. In the end he still gets mixed up and puts the saddle on his back instead of the horses.

I thought it was a cute and fun way to learn about different animals having differ...more

I sort of thought this was just a ho-hum book until the last page. And then I loved it.
Peter
This as a very cute children's book that holds enough humour for adults to laugh out loud too.
Maria
Great book and the kids all loved the ending! I thought that it was pretty funny too.

Funny book with some interesting animal facts and a silly ending (kids rate it 5).
