A fun read-aloud for little ones who are learning their ABCs.

It's sleepy time in Alphabet Town. But the twenty-six little letters of the alphabet all have something they need—or want—to do before big-letter moms and dads tuck them in. Not since the classic Chicka Chicka Boom Boom has there been such an appealing way to teach the youngest child the ABCs while providing a on...more

Appetizer: When it comes time to sleep in Alphabet Town, is seems many of the little letters aren't quite ready for bed.

Making use of some alliteration and the occasional rhyme, The Sleepy Little Alphabet shares the alphabet in order, usually (but not always!) reinforcing the sound of each letter with an adjective or verb that incorporates that letter.

The text also makes specific use of a parent being the one t...more

As a tool used for bedtime, I found this book to be great! This book talks about the routines before bed, but also incorporate alliterations to help the young reader learn the alphabet by linking certain letters to their same sounding words.
When I refer to the "young reader" I would be specific as to children who are in kindergarten or below. This is a good example of an "ABC" book and follows the same audience that would generally be reading an ABC book.
The illustrations were great. I loved th...more

It's bedtime for the twenty-six letters of the alphabet, which are characterized as lowercase letters and the parents are characterized as all uppercase letters. Children can related to the letters from their own bedtime experiences and the rhyming text adds a bit of humor to the tale.

Great for Storytimes about Letters or Bedtime.

This book tied into the Night theme for Family Story Time during the Summer Reading Program, Dream Big Read 2012. I actually had enough alphabet magnets to handout to each child. As I read the book, I asked them to come forward and place their letter on the magnet board. Worked out great! A good way to reinforce what is sometimes a hard sell - an alphabet book. We also sang the Alphabet song afterwards - very fast, then very slow.

It is a fun book that incorporates alphabet and bedtime. The letters are the characters in the story and each of them encounters some difficulty in the bedtime routine. The only downside is that the letters in the illustrations are hard for young children to distinguish and so using it to reinforce alphabet learning doesn't really work.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom redux. The same rhythm, the same naughty small case kid letters and grown-up parent letters.

Attractive and entertaining, but too derivative to NOT be compared to what is a kids classic.

Me and my 3-year old love this book. The rhymes are short and fun to say, and the pictures of letters with clothes and doing other things are often hilarious. My son has memorized his favourite letter rhymes and says them when we get to them.
Joenna
A cute ABC book where upper case "parents" try to get their lower case "children" to bed. Each little letter is doing something like bathing, jumping on the bed, or reading, until finally, the letter z is snoring z's and everyone goes to sleep.
Juli
I don't love the illustrations on this one, but the text is cute and silly, and the boys (2 and 4) love it. It has helped my 2 year old learn his lowercase letters. All about uppercase letters putting their lowercase letters to bed.

Best ABC book we've read since Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - to which book it invites comparison, because of the rhyme scheme and the personification of the letters as children. But not boring like I just made it sound!

i love this story! my grandaughter loves looking for the "mommy/daddy" and "baby" letters, and we look for the little letters' namesake toys together. we got it from the library, but i may have to buy it!
Jamie
Cute pictures, a couple of giggly pages (my girlie loves that the U page mentions underwear), and a nice cadence, which are all musts for anything we would actually add to our library. A good one.
Jill
I love the illustrations which are more than simple images of the letters but not overly cluttered either. It's a clever but simple story. I'd love to see more stories from Alphabet Town.

Themes: alphabet, humor, letters, colors, consonance,

Lots of detail, pics too small for stortime; It's a little on the longish side, but LOTs to see for young ones to pour over and "study"

The illustrations are adorable, but I don't really see what's so amazing about this book. My son absolutely loves this book. I have to hide it or else he'll make me read it to him constantly.
Molly
Very cute and fun for the kids. They especially liked staring at the last page and naming the objects that each letter has in bed (starting with the appropriate letter, of course).
Heidi
I only put my favorite children's books on here because my Goodread friends (all THREE of you!) all have little kids. In case you need suggestions next time you go to the library... :o)
Gwen
"I like this book because it was really fun because the little letters were the kids and the big letters were the grown ups. It's funny to see letters as kids and grown-ups."
Christina
This book is on the 2010 Capitol Choice list of Noteworthy Titles for Children up to seven. Capital letter parents trying to get their lower case letter children off to bed.
Joanna
I really enjoyed the sing-songy semi ridiculous narration even though they cheated and didn't actually use every letter properly. Extremely cute illustrations.

Fun story about letters getting ready for bed. The narrative is actually pretty entertaining for a typical alphabet book. And the pace is perfect for bedtime reading.
Tiara
I loved the personification of the alphabet letters-making them characters. The illustrations went well with the words; as well as great use of alliteration.

There was nothing really wrong with this, but nothing jumped out, either. If you're looking for a good alphabet book, read ABC U Later.

Cute little alphabet rhyme with letters heading to bed. I don't mind the rhyme in this because it's a little silly.
Amy Brown
Cute little alphabet book. Not as funny as Sierra's other work but still would be a fun one to share with families.
