No forgery, no attempt to imitation, no improbable sequel, no plunges of our beloved characters into an odd world full of monsters or vampires. In all respect to her omonym predecessor’s work, Jane Greensmith has written in her own style (original & lyrical ) nine short – stories inspired to Jane Austen’s novels and characters. Stories I enjoyed reading so much that I can’t find the right words to tell you. Maybe Jane Austen might help me : “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like rea...more

In Jane Greensmith's Intimations of Austen, I've found something that I generally feel lacking from Austen spin-offs and sequels. It's hard to put my finger on, but it's a pleasurable something. I think it's in the fact that, where many writers strive to "sound like" or feel like Jane -- and fail -- or imitate her characters in a sort of cardboard way, Greensmith chooses instead to give us embellishments on the characters and stories that we love, but in her own style and her own voice. Her s...more

Dictionary.com defines intimation as a hint or a suggestion of something, and thus it is the perfect word for this title. In Intimations of Austen, Jane Greensmith has put together nine short stories that hint at Austen, or suggest something of her style or prose. Sometimes, as in the earlier works, the connection is very subtle and left for the reader to interpret. At other times, the connection is obvious. Regardless, the stories are delightful.

Nine little jewels “inspired” by Jane Austen
Gentle Readers, please do not be fooled! Neatly tucked into this slim volume are nine short stories entitled “Intimations of Austen”, and not “Imitations of Austen”, which on first glance at the thin and fluid type face on the cover stopped me cold! To imitate Jane Austen would be only a forgery! I am happy to report that the stories in no way attempt imitation and set off no decorum alarms from this sector.

Look closely at the title of Intimations of Austen by Jane Greensmith and let that be your guide as to the nine mostly short stories inspired by the novels of Jane Austen. Because these are not stories Austen would have written or at least not the stories she would have written for publications.
In fact it would be fair to say Intimations of Austen isn’t even a book at all but instead a lost John Prine album distilled down to the heartache of an Austen heroine: all the moments before Elinor Dashw...more

Intimations. For the longest time I thought that said Imitations of Austen, which means to copy actions, appearance, etc., but the word, Intimations, well, it just sounds more English doesn't it? I almost travel back in time as it rolls off my tongue like liquid butter dripping off a hot muffin when I say it.
Intimations.
Sigh...
I'll admit, gulp - I had to look that one up. I suspected it held a similar meaning to its root, intimate, which means marked by close acquaintance or familiarity and t...more

Jane Greensmith is a very good writer. Jane Greensmith knows her Jane Austen. These two qualifications alone are enough to make me recommend her work, but there is more. Jane Greensmith can take an obscure little reference from a Jane Austen work and weave a beautiful story around it. She can tell the stories of not only major Austen characters, but also of minor characters like Mrs. Bennet. But most importantly, she can step outside the box and make subtle and interesting connections among Aust...more

Jane Greensmith has compiled some short stories, what-if scenarios, prequels, etc. of Jane Austen's works. The reason I give this book four instead of five stars is because I wished her stories were longer and not so short! The book is a little over 100 pages long and these tasty little morsels leave you hungry for more!!!! The last story was the longest at about 40 pages long and I would have liked to seen others be around that length. Here is what you will find:

This is a very short book of stories. The stories are taken from a range of Jane Austen's books. For me they start out very luke warm. The're okay nothing exciting, but the last short story is wonderful. It's the longest story and the author really redeems herself as far as I'm concerned. It's a P&P story was full of love and angst. Of course love always wins. Anyway it was definitly worth the reading. Though next time I probably would go right to the last story!! :)
Austen fans, don't miss this one.
It's fanfic, but it's not.
These are nine short stories that provide the final chapters, unexplained histories, and alternate endings to some of our favorites by the inimitable Miss Jane.
Inimitable - that's just the thing, isn't it? So much fan fiction attempts to imitate her and falls short. This one doesn't attempt to imitate. Ms. Greensmith's tone is more somber, even melancholy. She doesn't speak to me in Ms. Austen's voice. But she has, I believe, captured J...more

This was a mixed bag for me. Most of the stories were utterly dreadful, particularly The Color of Love. But three of them were delightful- The Last Baby, Heaven Can Wait, & All I Do. I particularly appreciated The Last Baby because I've always felt that there was a good story behind Mrs. Bennet's obnoxiousness, that there was more to her than met the eye.
This book was amazing! Jane Greensmith takes all of Austen's books and creates nine short stories that are told beautifully through her eyes. The only thing I wish is that they were all longer. She needs to come out with her own long story for all of them! We even gain insight into Mrs. Bennett. I recommend this one for all my fellow Janeites!

As a native of Colorado and a first-generation American, I instinctively look west. All my life, layers of blue mountains have shaped my horizon, and the endless prairie ends at my home in the foothills of the Rockies. Sometimes my mountains are swathed in snow, sometimes they're dry and desolate. But they're always enchanting. They dictate our wind and our weather. They magnetize and electrify ou...more
