If you enjoy Scottish history, with a good dose of the paranormal, David P. Elliot’s Clan revels in both. The author is skilled at depicting and manipulating myriad emotions, with his vivid descriptions and powerful characterizations.

As Clan opens, a great medieval battle unfolds between two giants, William Wallace, of Braveheart fame, and William de Soulis, lord of the ancient Hermitage Castle. Both men survive and while Wallace goes on to the fate history has recorded, de Soulis’s life takes h...more

Generally: I liked the book but there were just too many things working against it for me to relax and let myself be carried away by fantasy. I liked the twist of history mixed with fantasy set in the present. I felt that the author did not spend quite enough time building the characters by their actions. Instead the reader is simply provided with a set of facts surrounding a character's life (Elliot is overweight, divorced three times etc). Even now I cannot picture what the characters look lik...more

This is David Elliot's debut novel and what an exciting, gory, suspenseful story it is!

Set in the present time, the story goes back and forth over 700 years of bloody history of the border clans.

David Elliot is an unhappy man, he is terrified of dying having achieved nothing he felt was worthwhile in his life. He decides to learn more about his family history and he and his daughter, son-in-law and grandson travel from Oxford to the England/Scotland border and stay in a local cottage.

At the same...more

Actually I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. There's some great Scottish history and folklore in this book. It gave me a better understanding of the border reivers and how they viewed the world. I loved the role of ancestors in this book.

I didn't love the stereotypical mobster types and that entire aspect of the book. I could have done without it. I also had a disagreement with the way the author dealt with metaphysical issues.

So I thought it was a very good book, but I felt like it was trying t...more

I have read the book CLAN by David P Elliot in three sessions! Normally, I am not a fast reader, but that novel is a real page-turner and utterly captivating! Once you start reading it, you just can’t put it down! The story is told by a middle-aged, more or less frustrated Oxfordshire businessman who embarks on an epic journey up to the Scottish Borders, where he hopes to find out more about his ancestors, the mighty Elliot Clan. Not long after arrival, he and his family – his daughter, son-in-l...more

I've just finished reading CLAN and it was great. A terrific blend of history and mystery with a liberal sprinkling of the supernatural, suspense and blood and gore! As one who can be emotional over family and family history I found a particular part (which I won't elaborate on for fear of spoiling the plot for others) very emotionally-charged and had trouble keeping a dry eye. Altogether a really great read and I had trouble putting it down. I'm heading to Scotland in a couple of months and top...more

I was lucky enough to win "Clan" in the giveaways, what a stonking good read it turned out to be.

I was drawn into the story from the first page by the wonderful characterisation. History, myth, legend, the supernatural and corporate shenannigans are blended with subtlety and intelligence to create a book that captured me completely. At times I found myself gasping aloud and at one point close to tears, which was a little embarrassing as I was in a coffee shop during my lunch break.

The authour ha...more

AN extraordinarily original book- so well written and plotted that the reader is instantly pulled into the unique world the very talented David Elliot has created. In a time where so many books read like "seen it, read it already" - what a joy to find a novel that is so many steps above in character development, plot and location detail- highly recommended!!!

I really, really liked this book!! I love how he combined Scottish history with the modern, very creepy horror story. A great read!! Of course, history lover that I am, I enjoyed that part every bit as much as the modern story. Watch out for those Red Caps ... they are truly gross!!

I won this book in a giveaway :)

This bring to life Scottish history which many of us are unaware of, mixing it with a thrilling supernatural story line.

It is superbly written. The only thing that hindered the book was the font which was rather on the small side for my poor, bespectacled eyes!

Would definitely recommend to others!

A well crafted and entertaining tale. David Elliot weaves the elements of fantasy - at times bordering on horror - into his family's everyday search for roots and ancestors with the authority that comes from a sound knowledge of the history and folklore.

Quite how those obsessed with genres would categorise this book I don't know - for myself, I just file it under "damn good read".

David P Elliot spent 8 years in the Thames Valley Police in the 1970s, much of it as a detective, before leaving to go into the IT Industry where he spent close to the next 30 years.

In 2005, in what Elliot calls his ‘mid-life crisis’, he quit and took a year out to write full-time the result of which was ‘Clan’ his debut novel, which has been variously described as a historical supernatural thrill...more
