I loved Josi Kilpack's Lemon Tart. It was a fun and fast read, totally enjoyable from start to finish.

Kilpack managed to bring to life a whole cast of colorful characters and even while the main character was a goody-two-shoes busybody, she managed to make me really like her and route for her the whole way. I'm excited there's a new culinary mystery in the works featuring Sadie Hoffmiller, because she's just awesome.

Lemon Tart tells the story of a murdered young mother, a missing baby, an adulte...more

Meh.

I liked this story, and the writing wasn't too bad. The plot was pretty interesting and kept my attention, and I thought it was fun that there were recipes included. The mystery was fun and I liked the book overall.

The only reason this book didn't get 4 stars from me is that I just didn't like the main character, Sadie, all that much. Sadie is a retired former teacher in her mid-50s who has been a widow for twenty years and raised two adopted kids on her own, and she loves to cook. She is a...more

Hugely disappointing, as the cozy mystery (with recipes added no less) is one of my favorite genres. Contrived, awkward plot; the MC wasn't interesting, in fact none of the characters made me care one whit; poorly edited with excessive use of fluff adverbs that made me want to go through it with a red pencil. In fact, I think the problem with this lies more with the editing than the writing. It should have been much better, and with a sharp editor, it would have been.

But the recipes looked deli...more

This is written by an LDS author, and while the main character is LDS, this book doesn't have much content in way of religion.
Sadie Hoffmiller is busy canning her homemade applesauce when she notices two police cars drive into her otherwise quiet cul-de-sac. She soon discovers her neighbor, single mom Anne Lemmon, has been murdered and her son, Trevor has gone missing. After giving the detectives as much information as she can, s...more

The Intended audience of this book are young adult to adult. The main character is Sadie Hoffmiller a 56 year old widow with a passion for baking and grilling people for details. The setting of the book is modern day. The setting had to be modern day because they use a lot of the technology from the modern day time. Sadie wakes up only to find her neighbor, Anne Lemmon, dead and her two year old son Trevor missing. Anne may had had some problems with her boyfriend the father of her son, but over...more

Formulaic. Amateur.

Good for Josi Kilpack that she's getting published and all that, but I was interested by the comments of my coworkers, as well as interested to know there are already seven books in the series. It was good enough to finish, but something's missing. The exciting and dangerous parts need to be more exciting and dangerous. The emotion isn't there. Needs more character development? I read a review that said they thought Josi needed a better editor. Her editor is Lisa Mangum, an au...more

3.5 stars.

I liked this book. Although it isn't about LDS people, it is written by an LDS author and sold mainly at Deseret Book. That is why it gets put in my "lds-stories" shelf. Hopefully you get a sense of what this book is like knowing that background. To me when I hear that is book is by an author that has books mainly sold at Deseret Book, I think of light fluffy completely clean reads. That is exactly what this book is.

Don't expect stellar writing with this book but it is much better tha...more

Sadie Hoffmiller, a retired widow going on 60 years, who is on the verge of getting engaged is busy canning applesauce when she notices two police cars parked in front of her young, single neighbor's house in the cul-de-sac. The police are ready to break down the door because of a tip call when Sadie offers them the neighbor's keys. Sadie has been entrusted with keys for all the neighbors, which include her younger brother and sister-in-law, except Mr. Henry. When the police exit the house they...more

With my love of food-lit and mystery novels Lemon Tart seemed like an ideal read... and it is truly the best of both worlds. It was a quick, light read full of surprises and delicious recipes.

This is the first book I've read in a long time where the voice of the story is not that of the law enforcement or the criminologists who are doing the lead investigating, but that of a friend and neighbor looking in from the outside. At first, that took a little adjusting to, but once I switched mind frame...more

After multiple people told me they enjoyed “Lemon Tart” by Josi S Kilpack, I broke down and spent part of my book budget to obtain the 346 page mystery. I have to say I am impressed. As I have never read anything by this author before, I was a little wary when I picked it up. I wasn’t sure whether to expect a book about food or a sour tease. In fact, it is a mystery revolving around a lemon pastry.

Sadie Hoffmiller, is an unexpected heroine. At 56 she is...more

Lemon Tart is the story of Sadie Hoffmiller, a good-hearted neighborhood busybody, who looks up one morning while canning applesauce to see two police cruisers rushing into her cul-de-sac. Her neighbor, Anne Lemmon, is dead in a field behind her house, and no one knows where her two-year-old has gone. Sadie, who has spent her life teaching school, baking for her neighbors, and volunteering on nearly every committee and for every social project in her small Colorado town, can't just sit by and co...more

I finished chapter one of this book and wanted to bake . . . normally, I wouldn’t use that quality to rate a book more highly, but in this case, it’s entirely appropriate. Kilpack’s mystery about the murder of a suburban single mother combines the domesticity of home life with the standards of the mystery genre to make an interesting, thoughtful and very engrossing novel.

The basic plot involves a murder, a detective Ms. Sadie Hoffmiller (baker and apple sauce maker), and suspicions about all the...more

This is one of the best "cozy" mysteries I've ever read, and I can't wait to read the next books in the series. (My absolute favorites are Rett MacPherson's Torie O'Shea mysteries.) Kilpack's protagonist, Sadie Hofmiller, is a middle-aged woman with whom I can almost completely identify. ("Almost" because I have a living husband and am not the enthusiastic cook that Sadie is.) The plot does not contain the incredible holes that many of these character-driven mysteries have, and I enjoyed the boo...more

Josi Kilpack sent me this book back in February to read, and sadly I am a total slacker and just barely finished it. IN TWO DAYS, I finished it.

I really enjoyed Lemon Tart: A Culinary Mystery. It was an exciting, quick read! There are actual recipes littered throughout the book, and I found myself craving brownies as she talked about brownies and Fettuccine when she talked about Fettuccine! (thank heavens I actually had some leftover Costco Fettuccine on hand!)

I cannot even begin to tell you h...more

I wish I had the knack for writing a concise, informative review of books. I love reading those where they set down a brief overview of the plot and then praise, or pan, the book. I somehow can't really do that.

I had high hopes for this book. It was so highly rated by so many readers. The writing was much better than I expected and it really held my interest throughout the book. Even though there were no surprises and I had the culprit figured out for a long time.

The reason I didn't rate this b...more

Lemon Tart (Josi S. Kilpack) is a "candy book." Easy to ready, fun, and hard to put down.
A neighbor is found murdered and her death exposes secrets about the neighborhood and about assumed relationships. The protagonist, widow Sadie Hoffmiller, is forced to question her judgment on friendships and family and ultimately her staunch faith in family members is battered but ratified.
Sadie is a busy-body, but she has logic and concern beyond surface gossip gathering that helps her assist the unwillin

I had this book on my wishlist and was excited to receive it! I had NO clue what I was missing out on. Sadie is a lovable character and right from the beginning you fall in love with her and her nosy ways!

There were lots of parts in this book where I was laughing out loud, Sadie just gets herself stuck into so many situations trying to figure out who killed her neighbor and friend Anne and where Anne's missing son Trevor is.

You really can't guess who did it, which is exciting to me. I don't li...more

What I really like about Kilpack as an author is that even though she is LDS, her characters and stories are full of the dirtiness of real life. We aren't all shining stars that drop to our knees every time we face a mundane choice. In this book there is murder, adultery, lying, and ugly family life. I liked it all!
The one thing that really bugged me was the main character. I'm sure I am only irritated by her because I side with the police when it comes to police verses anything else. Frankly th...more

I found this book to be a relaxing read for a good murder mystery. Our new friend, sleuth, Sadie Hofmiller, is a widow with two children that has retired and finds herself the do-er for the cul de sac that she lives in.

Her Brother and family live next door and Sadie finds herself the keeper of the extra 'keys' for the street outside of one man, Mr. Henry.

Sadie spys police cars passing her kitchen window as she jars homemade applesauce. Born with an acute sense of needing to know, Sadie just find...more

Lemon Tart: A Culinary Mystery by Josi S.Kilpack

With Josi's previous books on issues, her newest is the start of a delightful culinary series. I've always enjoyed culinary mysteries, what with several mouth-watering recipes interspersed through out just to whet our appetite, it just makes you want more. Since this one is Lemon Tart, the cover is uniquely yellow!!!! Sadie Hoffmiller, cooking afficianado and amateur sleuth, finds her neighbor's dead body in a field out in the neighbor's back yard....more

I love cozy mysteries, and a culinary cozy mystery is especially delicious—except when they get so bogged down in the description of just how the egg whites were folded into the melted chocolate, you lose the thread of the story. “Lemon Tart” by Josi Kilpack takes all the things I love about a culinary cozy: the mystery, the quirky characters, the clean storyline, and the recipes—and keeps it in balance, without overwhelming us with the dicing of carrots or the selection of the perfect pork roas...more

This book was captivating, a page-turner. A really clean book, good for book groups. This is the first of a series, and I wouldn't mind reading further. The main character, Sadie, is sometimes very likeable and sometimes slightly annoying. I think that's not a bad thing, though, because who among us doesn't have annoying parts of us, and our friends still like us? A lot of things around her are falling apart, and I started predicting things happening before they did around the middle of the book...more

It's not horrible but what a rip off of Diane Mott Davidson. Seriously. How is this not bordering on plagiarism? Let's see: 1) Set in Colorado, check. Couldn't you even come up with your own state? 2) 50ish main character who likes to cook, check. 3) Recipes included, check. 4) Boyfriend is a police detective, check. 5) Involved in the community, check. The difference is, I like Goldy from the DMM books. I can't stand Sadie Hoffmiller, the main character of this book. She is super annoying. Who...more

I really identified with the main charachter, Sadie. I could imagine, visually what her little street looked like and how it would feel to live there and be her. I have a bit of Mrs. Kravits in me too, but I don't know if I would go as far as she did with her's.

I love, love, LOVE that there was no swearing and no sex in this book!!!!!!! So nice!!!

I kind of didn't like the middle part of the book. But at about chapter 32 (I honestly don't remember which chapter, but about there) it really took s...more

A fun mystery with a memorable lead character--a fifty something year old, retired widow, who loves spying on her neighbors and cooking, and is not opposed to finding a new love of her life (fifty year old men are painted as quite attractive). I admit, I rather love the new genre of "female mysteries," where knitting, gardens, and other traditionally feminine arts become the key to solving the mystery. This book, as the title indicates, is a culinary mystery, and the main character will stop at...more

I read the book lemon tart by Josi s. Kilpack, was very good at making this book a page turner. I love a page turner book; I haven’t read one in a while so I am glad that I found this one. This book is not so good at letting us figure out who the murder is. Some examples of good qualities of this book were it was a page turner, when Jack confessed to Anne’s murder, when Sadie found the file folder in Carries garbage. When you read those kinds of things you want to know what’s going to happen nex...more

My husband worries about the fact that I enjoy reading so many murder mysteries. Apparently I have a dark side. :) Anyway, this was was awesome and I am looking forward to more books in this series. Here we have Sadie - a widow in her 50's her devotes her life to cooking, homemaking, and the service of others. The kind of person you never expect to jump head first into the investigation of a murder! But she does, and to be honest, for most of the book, I kept thinking, "What are you doing? Why c...more

Murder. Isn't that always on the recipe for disaster? In Josi Kilpacks Murder Mystery Lemon Tart disaster is exactly what they got. This book takes place in a small neighborhood.Sadie Hoffmiller an older widow who loves to bake becomes a suspect in a mureder mystery when her young neighbor Anne gets killed.

After the murder two very different detectives come to investigate the case, one older and nicer and the other young, mean and suspicous. Sadie tries to help solve the mystery but seems to j...more

I'm the third of nine children born and raised in Salt Lake City Utah. I met my husband in high-school--well, he wasn't my husband then, just the cute guy in weight training with the permed mullet--and we married in 1993. I wrote my first book while on bed rest with my third child and have gone on to publish 18 novels, the most recent being part of The Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery Series.
