The trilogy "Los gozos y las sombras" (The joy and the shadows) written by GTB in the late 50s/early 60s remained in relative obscurity until a TV adaptation in the 80s achieved smashing success in the Spanish-speaking world. I confess if it weren't for the miniseries I'd probably never have known this author, and had the books on my wanted list for many years. The story takes place in Pueblanueva, a tiny fictional fishing village in Galicia (The Spanish region, not the one in Eastern Europe) du ...more

I read this for Spanish practice, although it was challenging to understand every word, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The characters of Carlos Deza, Cayetano, Doña Mariana, and Clara Aldán, among others, are well-wrought, especially with the evocative dialogues and events that carries the characters and the narrative well, that you really feel that an epic saga is unfolding in your hands as you read it. The exchanges between Carlos and his archrival Cayetano are an absolute pleasure to read, almost a ...more

Although primarily a novelist, he also published journalism, essays, and plays. His career as a writer began in Oviedo, but developed largely in Madrid.

After moving around frequently in the later 1920s and early 1930s, including a period in Paris, he returned to Spain and linked himself to Franco's Falange party in order to save his own life and that of his family. His first novel, Javier Mariño,
