I remember reading this book many years ago, which actually makes me feel a bit old now (I'm 14, that's not right!) and I remember loving it from the start. I was definitely younger than nine years old... My brother liked it, so I had to read it.

lovers of High Fantasy series who are willing to sit through a slow opening novel
David Eddings is comfort reading of the highest order (okay, I will admit that I stopped reading him after a certain point, but this series was before that point, so!); I'd reread all of the rest of this series in December, and all of the followup series (The Tamuli), but my copy of this one had taken a walkabout, so I had to backfill and re-read the first one last.

My very favorite David Eddings book and, no surprise here, it's also the very first one of his books I ever read. This is a great sword-and-sorcery adventure tale, complete with the heroic knight, his handsome best-friend comrade-in-arms, an ethereal sorceress, and the lovely spellbound princess they're all trying to save. Plus, it's got a whole cast of interesting characters and a lot of snappy, entertaining dialog.

I read this trilogy in high school and all I remembered was loving it. Since I was somehow convinced that it was related to the Belgariad and the Mallorean I decided to read it again. It is in NO way connected, which was slightly disappointing, but it was every bit as good as I remembered. While the plot is less intricate in this series than in the Belgariad, I think that Eddings does an even better job with the characters (something I hadn't thought possible). The dialog in this book is probably the best thing about it. Eddings has a WONDERFUL talent with snappy remarks and clever comebacks. I remember when I first read it, reading bits aloud to my sister. "But ThPARhawk" he lisped. "You know how thatin thpoths when it geths wet!!"
Yeah, probably doesn't mean much to you, but trust me, it was hilarious.
It's a true fantasy novel, with knights and magic and battles and the works. Definitely my favorite Eddings novel.

Fantasy junkies
This was the first hardcore fantasy novel that I'd read in years and years that didn't start with "Harry Potter and the~".
It took a while for me to get into it, but once I did, the story really flew by and I need to get my hands on the other two of the trilogy so that I can get an epic fantasy under my belt again.
For a re-introduction into the fantasy world (or an introduction for a newbie), this book (series) would be a great place to begin.

What can I say. I'm a hardcore sci-fi geek. I was really into sci-fi/fantasy while growing up and then sort of lost my way during the college years, but now I'm back. with a vengeance. I read this once a long time ago and grew nostalgic and am now working my way through the Elenium. Gnarled medieval knights. Swoon. Is this goth-y? Don't know.

My husband finally convinced me to try reading this book. I believe he's read this series before, and I must admit, I am rather enjoying it. The main character, Sparhawk, is not really loveable, but is portrayed as very human, stubborn, and a bit reckless. It's an interesting story so far, though I haven't gotten very far into the book.

This book was entertaining, but not really great. It was more like a late night TV show then a hollywood movie on the same topic. Just not really enthralling, not very rich and vivid. Worth reading if you want entertainment, but it didn't hold my attention enough for me to complete the series.

Calling to my inner geek, I read this book on my honeymoon (hey, a girl's got to read too, you know?). Book one of a fantasy trilogy, the protagonist is an interesting combination of medieval knight and sorcerer. Nice escape reading- some funny dialogue.

Enjoyable fantasy read. I flew through this series when I was re-reading it. It's a fun way to pass a few hours. Not laugh-out-loud funny, but genuinely amusing characters and antics. Interesting plot line but fairly routine fantasy.

This is a review for all three books in this series. These novels are pure trash and I love em. Basically it's Clint Eastwood as a medieval knight. He's on a quest for…who cares? It's Clint Eastwood as a medieval knight!

I've probably read this 4 or 5 times. It's fun, entertaining & amusing. I liked this first trilogy better than the second (Tamuli) but both are good if you're looking for something quick, light & entertaining.

this trilogy was the first eddings series i read. it was awesome!!! a good introduction to eddings and his humour. i do prefer the belgariad and the mallorean, but the elenium was very good and still gripping.

A wonderful fantasy series. I read it for the first time last year, and immediately knew, that this would be a series I'd reread time and time again. I'm a big fan of fantasy, and this is some of the best.

I couldn't really get into this book. I think I was looking for more of the Belgariad and I was disappointed. After reading the other reviews I may give it another try.

This was the first Eddings book I read, and I just can't get enough. I even went back and read books that were many years older. Eddings has yet to dissapoint.
