Bird and Raccoon are playing catch when the ball bonks Bird in the head. Although Raccoon apologizes profusely and kisses Bird’s boo-boo, Bird is inconsolable. Raccoon decides to ask some of their friends for help. Rabbit gives Bird a hug, Beaver gives Bird a cookie, Sheep suggests a game to distract Bird, and Fox puts a band-aid on the boo-boo. Nothing helps. Bird’s friends finally burst into tears themselves, crying, “Boo hoo hoo! Nothing is making Bird feel better.” All of a sudden Bird feels...more

Boo Hoo Bird is a simple story that all children can relate to. Bird is playing a game of catch with his friend when you gets hit on the head with the ball. Bird cries and cries, and nothing will make his boo-boo feel better. All of his friends try different ways of getting Bird to feel better. When all of his friends have given up, Bird finally realizes that his boo-boo doesn’t hurt so badly after all.
The artwork for this story is done in a classic cartoon style. Children will love the blue bi...more

Jeremy Tankard's grumpy bird returns but this time he's not grumpy - he's injured! Bird is playing ball with Racoon when a throw goes awry and Bird gets bonked on the head. Soon Bird's friends are trying all the classic fixes - kissing the bonk, hugs, cookies, a band-aid - but nothing is working. It's not until a surprise turn of events, that Bird is restored to himself.

Tankard continues to knock them out of the park with utter simplicity. His characters could be copied by a beginner and yet the...more

"Oh no," said Raccoon, "I've wounded Bird!"

Another hilarious and awesome Bird book from Jeremy Tankard. I love the bright colors he uses--I want to make wallpaper out of his backgrounds. And I love cranky, cantankerous Bird and his well-meaning, helpful friends.

I feel a bit guilty about giving this book such a low rating because my almost 3 year old daughter really did enjoy the illustrations. However, I was really disappointed with a story where the main character, who despite his friends' reasonable attempts to comfort him, was inconsolable until all of them were upset and crying too. I was hoping the bird would realize how much his friends cared about him, and that those feelings of being loved would overcome his experience of minor pain. I imagine...more

The star of Grumpy Bird returns, and this time he has something to be grumpy about, but instead, he is upset. VERY upset. Bird is playing with his friend and accidently gets hit in the head with the ball. He cries and cries and cries and absolutely nothing his friends do make him feel better. The forest friends at a loss begin to cry to and this shocks Bird out of his fit. The friends begin to play once more, and what happens?!?! Bird gets bonk on the head again. The bright and bold illustration...more

Boo Hoo Bird is a good story about Bird who has a boo- boo and is sad. His friends try to cheer him up but all he does is "Boo Hoo" and in return, it makes them "Boo Hoo" too. Finally, Bird cheers up by seeing his friends 'boo-hooing'. I feel that this story would be good to show the children that even though sometimes we might get hurt, your friends can help your boo-boo get better.
I would use this book for if someone gets a boo-boo in class or if one of our schoolmates has a cast from an inju...more

Bird and Raccoon are playing catch when, suddenly, “BONK!” A throw goes awry and Bird is hit in the head. He wails in pain and unhappiness as, one after one, his friends try to find a way to make him feel better: a hug? A cookie? A band-aid? Nothing works, causing Bird’s friends to burst into tears as well. Surprisingly, that’s just what makes Bird realize he’s fine, really. Reading this book aloud provides the reader with a great opportunity to really ham it up; pretending to moan and wail. The...more

We recently read Grumpy Bird and I loved that it let me unleash my inner Grumpy Bird as I read it. I was actually grumpy that night and being a grumpy bird helped me lose my anger and turn a potentially frustrating evening into a lot of laughs.

So we eagerly put this book on hold at our local library, hoping to see the same charm. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed. It was a good book, but not great. The illustrations still have the same colorful and adorable charm as the first book a...more

Bird and Racoon were playing a game catch when Bird got bonked in the head with the ball. It hurt, so of course he started to cry. Racoon tried to make Bird feel better but Bird just kept on crying. Other friends tried to help but nothing seemed to help.

We’ve all known and probably been the Boo Hoo Bird at some time in our lives. Long after the hurt stops the tears just keep rolling. Boo Hoo Bird is a good story to have around in case of an attack of the Boo Hoos.

This is a Shining Willow Award Nominee. It is a very cute circle book. I love circle stories that end where they begin. It shows the compassion of friends as they try to help their buddy who is hurt. I got a chuckle from the various things the friends try to help their friend because they are all things that we, as teachers, parents, babysitters, aunties, grandmas, etc have all done to try and make that boo boo better!

Jeremy Tankard writes such wonderfully simple stories with deep lessons for children. The bird in this story gets hurt and all his woodland friends try everything to comfort him. Neither hugs, cookies, or band-aids can help bird feel better. Bird's friends become miserable because of him and Bird learns that everything's going to be okay after all. Wonderfully vibrant illustrations that will draw children in.

Cute story about a bird that gets bonked on the head while playing with his friends. His friends all try to make him feel better but constantly seem to fail at it. This book actually reminds me of my preschool class and how the children behave when one of them gets hurt. The endings cute as its very realistic :0)
Would recommend to any parent of preschool aged children or teachers

My toddler's current favorite book. Bird gets bonked on the head and all his friends try to make him feel better by offering him a kiss, a hug, a cookie, a game of hide and seek, etc., all to no avail. Eventually bird's friends burst into tears too because they can't help bird feel better which is finally what it takes to snap Bird out of his drama. Vivid, colorful illustrations.

This delightful story about a bird who opts for attention-getting crying after he is bumped on the head rings true for anyone of any age. Kindergartens take this seriously, grade 3s get the joke, and adults (especially teachers) are reminded of the magical bandaids & ice packs we see on a daily basis. The artwork is bright, and surprisingly expressive. Our Boo Hoo Bird is as lively as his predecesor, "Grumpy Bird."

Simple text makes this especially appropriate for toddlers. Illustrations are bright and colorful, but some of the animals are a little too stylistic and not realistic enough for me. Plot elements are both building and circular where bird gets hurt while playing catch, goes to different animal friends to fix the boo-boo and on the last page he gets hurt again.

Poor Bird gets a big boo boo on his head when he gets bonked with a ball. All the animals try to help Bird feel better but nothing helps: not kisses, not hugs, not cookies. Finally, a band-aid does the trick and all the animals start to play ball again. Guess what? Bird gets bonked again. Great drawings and lots of laughter.

Not quite as good as Grumpy Bird by the same author, but still quite entertaining and on a subject little kids can identify with (overdramatizing a bump on the head to be the end of the world as we know it). The pictures and expressions on the bird's face are awesome. Although nothing compares with the Grumpy Bird facial expression!

Bird gets bonked on the head while playing catch. Racoon and other friends do everything they can from hugs to Band-Aids to make him feel better. Bird seems like a bit of a whiner, but he eventually realizes that he's okay and even tries to make his concerned friends laugh...until the next game of catch.

Simple concept, simple book.

A bird gets bonked on the head and cries and his little forest friends try to help him.

All of us have had ouchies and need to be comforted. So this book teaches a lesson while spinning a yarn. Nice cartoonish and colorful illustrations add the final touch.

The kids will get this and enjoy it. And so will any parent who has had the sort of kid who wants to dial 911 for a scratch so tiny you need a magnifying glass to see it!
When my own melodramatist finally had a REAL injury it took a while for us to believe her (!)

We loved this one because we have a crier in our house. The bird is sad because he got bumped and everyone tries to make him feel better in their own way. Finally all his friends start to cry because he is still sad. Then, suddenly, he is over it. So true!
Kristen
I enjoy this bird. I didn't like this as much as Grumpy Bird but it was still a fun story and the kids like it. I do love the illustration style.

Although all his friends try to help, Bird is inconsolable when he gets bonked on the head, and soon the other animals are just as distressed as he. Tankard's follow-up to Grumpy Bird features the same vivid colors, bold lines, and humor of the original. Fans of the first title will flock to Boo Hoo Bird.

My personal favorite: "You want me to hide? I CAN HARDLY WALK!!!"
Edna
Grumpy Bird is back as Boo Hoo Bird who gets bonked on the head. Leave it to his friends who rally together to make Bird feel better but what happens when they empathize a bit too much? Sweet book about good friends.
Ingrid
I am totally loving this author. I started with Grumpy Bird and this one is just as good. Bright, vivid illustrations. A simple story with great humor. Wonderful for reading aloud to groups.

I didn't like this one quite as much as grumpy bird, but still LOVE it. MY son especially likes the bandaid and saying boo hoo bird. Again, cute story of a funny little bird that gets a bonk.

I used this as a read-aloud for my Grade 2 class when modelling 3 Ways To Read Books from the Daily 5 Program. The text is simple and effective, and there's a vibrant use of colour.
Sara
Engaging and sweet. Michael was able to recall and retell almost every attempt bird's friends made to soothe his boo-boo. Good book for a preschooler to grasp and internalize.
