While the book was enjoyable at times, it could also become a bit tedious, and the hero and heroine were separated too much for my liking. The premise of the Guardians was kind of interesting, but somehow it just didn't quite work for me, although I'm not entirely sure why. (This may be because I've delayed a week in writing this review, which means my memory's a bit fuzzy already.)

Despite some weaknesses in the narrative, I was sufficiently intrigued by A Distant Magic to give the first book of the series a shot. And so I read A Kiss of Fate, whose hero is none other than Jean Macrae's older brother, Duncan. A work as uneven as its sequel, it lacks the latter's flamboyant action, but makes up for it with a more elaborate, intimate love story. Once again, then, still a worthwhile read if not a fully satisfactory novel.

Generally, I really enjoy Mary Jo Putney's novels. This one I couldn't even manage to finish. Trite and cliched, and even worse, characters that were indistinct from one another AND not particularly likable.
The first full novel in this series and it's great fun. Mary Jo got me with her start in the library and kept my interest throughout. Set around the time of the Bonnie Prince Charlie rebellion this is a story of hard choices and trying to keep love alive.
Gwynne Owens is a very strong character and her relationship with Duncan Macrae is great fun. They are married early in the book but don't really know each other well they have to learn all about each other and their powers. I look forward to mo...more

I found this to be a very complying story. Iam a hug fan of Highlander’s as it is. So to say that this one was no different. “Kilts” hmmm…
Well in this story, there was a magical twist, so you did not just get the Highlands and the and a time of Lord and Lady’s. You got power, weather magic and empathic magic to say.
Do not think that there wasn’t any romance and hungers of different kinds. A kiss of Fate had a little of all. Very glad I picked it up to read!

I listened to Stolen Magic first and thought that audiobook was just so-so. This book was better not great but better than Stolen Magic. I really liked the hero and heroine. I noticed with Putney's books if there's sex outside of marriage (and this includes the men), there's a lot of shame. Here when he was young, he washed himself over and over again because he felt dirty. And in Stolen Magic the hero was a virgin. Must be a theme with her books.
*** "A Kiss of Fate" by Mary Jo Putney is second passionate romance in the Guardian saga, about magical protectors trying to keep peace in the rising of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Powerful mage of storms, Scottish McCrae is infatuated on sight with shy English Gwynne. Their first kiss brings visions of blood and battle that the ruling circle believe their marriage could avert. The Highlands are home to strong men and women. Hoo-rah.
There's great potential in the world Putney created in this novel, but I was disappointed. The exposition felt heavy-handed and the premise of greater equality between Guardian men and women was undermined by having the heroine's power tied to stereotypical feminine-wiles.

"Gwynne avvertì un brivido che le partì dal cuore e le si diffuse in tutto il corpo. Con una certezza che andava oltre ogni dubbio, comprese che il suo destino era legato al ruolo di Duncan in quell'imminente guerra civile."

An excellent read that at first I did not think I would like, as i do not believe in Magical Powers for good, but it turned out to be a very wonderful read. Duncan MacRae is a powerful mage for good who also can influence the weather. When he meets Gwyneth whoise father was also a mage, who does not believe her powers are strong, it takes only one kiss to awaken her mage powers. Together they work to help Scotland in her struggle against the British, and find themselves incolved in the tragic bat...more
I grew up reading stories about Scotland and Bonnie Prince Charlie, especially those by Sally Watson http://www.imagecascade.com/MM071.ASP... and I've liked Putney's regencies in the past.

Adored this book and re-read often.
Wow is about all I can say right now. And even though I am not a history buff, and at times had trouble following the politics of the story, none of that diminished Mary Jo Putney's ability to write out the most amazing romance - one of the best I have ever read. Being a writer, I have no idea how she achieved the subtle flow from passion to conflict and back again so flawlessly that never did I doubt an impulse, a thought, and action of the hero or heroine. Wow! Again, right now that is all I c...more
