This is definitely in my top 10 books. I wasn't sure about reading this because it had to do with fantasy and horses and I just wasn't up to trying to believe in Pegasus horses that live by a magical lake. Then I started to get into it and I really liked it. The beginning is pretty good, and I like the way her grandmother makes her dress and talk and eat. I think that it would be kind of cool to see what that type of life is like. When Payton loses her favorite horse Paint {I think that's it's n...more

Now I've read and own the complete Munoz Ryan chapter-book collection. While 'Paint the Wind' ranks slightly below the stellar 'Esperanza Rising,' it's right up there with the others: the recent 'The Dreamer,' 'Becoming Naomi Leon,' and 'Riding Freedom.'

'Paint' is ostensibly a horse story, about an isolated and lonely orphaned girl who opens up to the world after riding the same wild mustang her mother loved. However, Maya's prim and repressed personality is formed during a cloiste...more

... I am such a girl.
Why do kids books seem to be so much more emotional than adult books?
Damn. Got a bit chocked up quite a bit?
Cute book. Good for kids.
300 and some pages so may depend on the kid?
Quick read though, with a story line that holds you close.
Over all I did like it. Just what I was looking for!
It was written in a way that just lightly touched the surface of many things,
It could have been much deeper ...more

A review of this book came through on the school library listserv I belong to quite some time ago, and I finally got around to borrowing it from our local library.

A young girl, Maya, has been living with her strict grandmother after the death of her parents, her only link to her mother being a set of toy horses and a single photograph. Her grandmother has filled her with stories of the perfection of her son, Maya's father, and how his life was ruined by his marriage to Maya's mother...more

My son is reading this as part of "Battle of the Books." I wanted to screen it because of the "being held captive by her grandmother" bit mentioned in the book description. So I found an audiobook version on Library2go, and listened. It was fine. Grandmother was pathologically restrictive, but it wasn't gruesome in any way, or critical of authority figures.

I actually loved how her grandfather and his family were portrayed. And her response to changes in her life....more

I've always been a fan of Pam Munoz Ryan. I heard her speak once and she made me cry. Her newest book, told in the tradition of Black Beauty is entitled Paint the Wind; I challenge you to read it without tears. The novel centers on two female characters--first, Maya, who lost her parents to a car accident and lives with her grouchy, perfectionist, and rich grandmother. The second main character is Artemisia--a stunning wild horse who was once tame...clearly Maya's alter-ego and the key to Maya...more

Paint The Wind by Pam Munoz Ryan (2009) With only a few memories and hidden mementos of her horse-loving mother, orphaned Maya grows up dreaming of horses and resenting the care of her strict Grandmother. But when she goes to live with her mother’s family in horse country, she finds that her manipulative tactics are less effective and has to adapt in order to deal with the new people and challenges in her life.

Although the main narrative is told from Maya’s point of view, the first c...more

I read this book on the beach in a few hours. Very, very enjoyable. This is the second book I have read by this author and her writing style and the way she uses a theme for the whole book make her one of my favorites. In Esperanza rising the book uses the seasonal vegetables and fruits that the migrant workers are picking at the time as a metaphor for the characters lives. In Paint the wind, she uses the process of learning to ride a horse (walk, jog, lope, gallop) and both the horses and t...more

I thought this book was amazing , and I definatly would recommend this book to every one. It was an adventurous story about a girl ,Maya who is pretty much being held captive in her grandmothers house. She is an only child and her mother and father were kiled in a horseback riding accidend when she was very young. Her Dads mother now will never forgive her mothers side of the family for her mothers love of horses and the trip they took. When her parents had died ,they had aggreed that Maya wou...more

I absolutly loved this book. It was written in such a great way. I loved how Pam Munoz Ryan added Artmesia's side of the story so we know what went on with her.

I didn't like how Maya's grandmother didn't let her have friends, or fun, or that she always had to be neat, or that she could never talk about her mother. Like seriously. It also really annoyed me that her grand mother told the housekeeper to throw away the box of horses that Maya's mother gave to her. And that the housekeepe...more

When Maya's paternal grandmother dies, she finally gets a chance to meet her mum's family and to experience her mum's fascination with horses. Thereby she not only finds out more about her background but truly discovers herself. I absolutely loved reading this book - it is right up there with Esperanza Rising and Becoming Naomi Leon - and was not disappointed even though I had high expectations. While I am afraid of horses and consequently usually not that interested in the topic, I loved accomp...more

I hesitated in picking up this book because I was never that into 'horse books,' but this is so much more than a 'horse book.' Pam Muñoz Ryan has done it again! I just loved how she takes you into a setting so unique, it is almost magical. Maya is a character I think many people can relate to, someone who feels out of place and like she doesn't belong.

I didn't enjoy the italic sections describing the horses as much as the other parts, but I appreciated them more when I read the auth...more

I'm not usually into horses and stuff like that but I found out that this book is more than that. I love realistic fiction and books about orphans. It shows me how lucky I am. This book I read in one night when I was spending the night at my friends house and finished just before her and her mom woke up so I got no sleep. That shows how much I really liked the book. This book is well written and adventure filled. I cried at least 5 different times in this book. *I know, I'm a sap* I fell in love...more

I really enjoyed this book and I can see the horse lovers latching on to this book big time. It's got a bit of emotional drama in it, along with a little adventure. The contrast in scenery from the fist part of the book to the end is wonderful. Our heroine finds a family that she loves, grows up a bit, and discovers her true strength in a dire situation. I don't really see why we need a graphic description of the birthing of a horse right at the beginning, but maybe that's because I'm not a hors...more

This book was one of my favorite books I have ever read. It is about this girl who parents die and she has to go live with her grumpy grandma. But she goes and visits her aunt. While she is there she is horseback riding and finds a wild horse. She tries to catch it but can't. One day it comes to the camp and she finds out that she kind of new the horse in a way. She then keeps it and rides it like she has know that horse for her whole life. I recommend this book if you like to read about amazing...more

It was a WONDERFULLY MAGNIFICENT book! I felt like i was there with her!I went so much into the fantasy and magic of this book that i was falling and sliding off the couch! When my mom would tell me to do something I wouldn't even hear what she said! I finished the book in a day. I read a lot for a ten year old. I don't understand why she didn't have much feeling for when her grandmother died. The other could have put more into that but that's it! Everything else was PERFECT and AWESOME! I wish ...more

Maya's parents died when she was four years old, and ever since, she's lived with her grandmother, her father's mother. Grandmother is very strict, very protective--Maya can't leave the yard, can't have friends, can't do anything remotely dangerous or fun, can't play, can't mention her mother, can't mention horses. Maya's world is very small, as a result, but Maya's learned a few things--how to lie, mostly, to avoid getting in trouble or to get a troublesome housekeeper fired--that make life b...more

Horse fans should love this book. Mya goes to live with her grandfather and great Aunt Vi. Horsemanship is in this family's blood. Aunt Vi in an art history professor and studies wild horses. She names the horses after artists. It is a book of suspense and survival.

I listened to the PlayAway version. The narrator made Mya a bit too whiny.
It included a discussion of Pam Munoz Ryan's development and research for this story. Ryan fans will not be disappointed.

I am on page 116 out of 316. In the book Paint The Wind Maya lived with her Grandmother. Her Grandmother was perfect and had to have everything perfect, including Maya. Maya got upset with her Grandmother and switched a number color for her chairs she was ordering and got the maid fired. When they hired a new maid she made an omelet for Maya's Grandmother. When she ate it she had a stoke and died. Now Maya is living with another part of her family.

This might just be the best book ive ever read!!!
Its a great book about a girl who grew up with no parents.
She lives with her wealthy, very propper dads mom.
When her grandmother gets ill, she goes to stay with her moms parents out in the west.
Maya isnt used to all of these people who are relaxed and loose, she stays with her family at her aunts camp.
She rides a wild horse, breaks her leg and goes through all of the pranks from her rascal cousin!

I loved this book and was sorry to see it end. Maya is an orphan living with her controlling grandmother in California, but when her grandmother dies she goes to live with her mother's relatives in Wyoming. Life with her grandfather, aunt and great uncle could not be more different than her life in California. Maya learns about her mother and her love of horses. Maya also loves horses and makes a special connection with same horse that her mother loved.

Maya is a captive. In Grandmother's house in California, every word and action is strictly monitored, and even Maya's memories of her mother have been erased -- except within the imaginary world she has created. A world away, in the rugged Wyoming wilderness, a tobiano Paint horse called Artemisia runs free, belonging only to the stars. She embodies the spirit of the wild -- and she holds the key to Maya's memories. How Maya's and Artemisia's lives intertwine, like a braided rein, is at the hear...more

This book shows true passion about horses. I guess you could see that by the cover, but it really does. Anyway, Maya's Parents die in a car wreck and she is left with her grandma. Maya has one horse (a small play doll horse) that used to belong to her mother, she has more but that one really speaks to her. Then her grandma dies and she is sent to live with other family members. They challenge her to find her true identity. Can she do it?

This is Ivy.Paint the Wind is about a little girl and horses.
Character Trait-Moose is a man that cries almost instantly and wears his heart on his sleeve. He also works at his sisters farm in the summer [ the farm is really a summer camp] he also loves his granddaughter.
I recommend this book to people who like to read about animals, life threating events, adventures, and finding a place in your heart for people you think you've never seen.

This book was great!!! I really ejoyed it. A girl named Maya lives with a ridiculously strict grandmother because her parents have died. Then she has to go live with her moms side of the family. She meets many horses. If you want to know why she has to go live with the other side of her family, you'll have to read the book. Also she meets her trickster of a cousin, Payton. Her life changes alot in this book. It is also alot about being free. I really recommend this book!:)
