I chose this book to read to my little girl, who is 4 yrs old, because she is in love with pirate movies and anything to read about them. However, there are hardly any books or movies that involve females as the main characters in a pirate type setting. This book was exactly what she needed to have read to her. There were no rhyming words in the story line, but the story was short but had several paragraphs on each page. It began with a ship full of drunk, mean, pirates finding a little girl in More...

When Captain Firebeard's ship of pirates, the Horrible Haddock, comes across Molly in her little sailboat, he makes the mistake of taking her aboard and forcing her to do the worst tasks on board. Molly tries to warn the crew that when her mother finds out about this, they will be in big trouble. Of course, the rough and tumble pirates think she is just full of hot air. However, secretly at night, Molly has been dropping messages in bottles overboard. In the end, the Horrible Haddock meets anoth More...

Molly was on her way to see her grandmother when she was raided by Pirates.
Captain Firebeard and his crew raided every ship that came into sight. So when Molly's ship came into their view it was no surprise when they decided to raid her ship and bring her onto their ship. She was made peel potatoes and cleaned boots. But Molly told Captain Firebeard and his crew they would regret this and they would get their pay back.
This was a cute little book with a nice ending. I really like how it ended, bu More...

Ferocious pirate Captain Firebeard THINKS that he and the ruthless crew of the "Horrible Haddock" rule the high seas. But Firebeard and his band meet their match when they kidnap a small but feisty girl named Molly. Even after the pirates threaten Molly with sharks and make her scrub the deck, she is utterly defiant -- and will NOT tell Firebeard who her parents are. All the while, Molly is busy sending secret messages in bottles...but to whom? When her rescuers arrive, the pirates are in for a More...

One of the great things about reading with my kids is that books often prompt interesting questions and lead into wonderful discussion that give me insight into my kid's thinking. So what thought-provoking, insightful question did this book bring up? "Mom, what is rum?"
Seriously the pirates in this book cuss (although no swear words actually appear in the book), drink rum and cause all kinds of trouble. Fortunately little Molly is able to outsmart them all and has one scary Momma. This was a fav More...

This book will appeal to girls and boys alike. The pirates are just as scummy and awful as you hope a pirate will be in a good picture book. Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen's Pirate Princess, soon-to-be-published, reminds me a lot of Funke's charming tale. Both feature girls that sail the seas and serve the every whim of the mean and evil pirates.

An attempt at a cute story about a girl kidnapped by pirates on the way to visit her grandmother. Something just fell flat for me, though. There is reference to rum, which could upset some parents. In the end it is discovered that Molly's mother is an even more feared pirate, which seemed kind of odd. Good for those who have exhausted other pirate-themed books.

This story of a brave and resourceful girl captured by pirates is a nice "girl power" story although it didn't strike me as particularly special or memorable in the storytelling or illustrations. It will probably appeal to fans of pirates, though, and is a good choice for boys and girls.

eh. with a title like "pirate girl" i was hopeful for some swashbuckling action. this one just sort of...sinks. pirate girl is kidnapped by a band of pirates and not scared of their threats, knowing that she will be found by the fiercest pirate of all.

I know. I know. It is a picture book and I shouldn't over think it but what in the heck was Molly doing floating around the ocean all by herself? Silly but fun book especially for girls who love the idea of growing up to be a pirate.

A humorous tale of a little girl who is brave in the face of a ship full of dangerous pirates. It's an inspiring tale of girl power, that's a wee bit silly, a wee bit scary, and a lot of fun to read aloud.

This is currently my 6yo son's favorite book. He says it's because he likes pirates. I like how Molly tricks those pirates and gets the upper hand.

27 months - a cute story. Nice to see a girl pirate for a change, now that's something my little girl can relate to. ARG!

Would be a good pairing with the Paper Bag Princess for strong female characters.

Rockin' book. My kids (aka - my students) love pirate tales and this has been a great one to share with them. Molly is a strong female character (and her family is AWESOME!). The book does great things to break down gender stereotypes and expectations -- about what women and girls can do, how they should behave, and their capacity to take care of and provide for themselves. The illustrations are rich and the kids love catching all the exciting little details. A big downfall (for me) is the absen More...

Pretty silly, but kind of cute. We wanted to see her grandmother though!

This was an amusing pirate tale. I liked how the story didn't go the way you'd imagine it going, but it still kept you entertained. The spirited little girl was a spunky character who I enjoyed seeing interact with the band of ruthless pirates. The ending was a tad bit random, but still interesting. I might recommend.

Funny that a girl captured by a fearsome group of male pirates and put to work, turns out to be none other than the daughter of a more fearsome group of female pirates who overtake that very group of male pirates and put them to work. Good if you liked the other two Cornelia Funke/Kerstin Meyer books.

A cute little girly named Molly is kidnapped by Captain Firebeard and his crew of ferocious pirates. "If I told you my mother's name, you'd cry like a baby!" shouts Molly.
Those pirate should have listened when she told them to let her go. Gr. K-2.

The twist here—Molly’s pirate family—is great. It’s a fun book, full of attitude. I love books that give kids a chance to be “bad”—and I love that everything Molly said to the pirates ended up being totally true.

Very cute book with an unexpected twist. Joey (4yo) loved this book! Features strong females, but not sure if you would consider pirates to be role models. :-/
