Y'know how sometimes you pick up a book and you think, "Wow, that's an interesting cover," and you flip it over and read the back and think, "Wow, that's an interesting plot set-up," and then you check out the author and you think, "Crap. That's an author I can't stand."

Nell MacDermott is devastated when her husband, Adam Cauliff, dies in a boat explosion. Her grief is made worse because she had quarreled with Adam the day before he died about her desire to follow in her grandfather's footsteps and run for political office. When people start questioning whether Adam was involved with shady real estate deals, Nell struggles to clear his name before it ruins her political chances. She reluctantly uses the help of a psychic who claims that Adam is speaking to her...more
I am torn between giving this a 2 or 3 star rating. The start of the book was fine, fairly decent pace to getting the story started and building a bit of background. However I feel that it took an age to get to the good stuff and it dragged a lot. There was quite a few things going on, psychic vibrations and mediums so you thought the ghost aspect was going to be quite big. Also there was a lot of individual side stories going on which does happen in a lot of books but normally they get to a hug...more
I have read Mary H Clark before,so know hers is slightly paranormal style. This one is about a wife finding her husband dead one day in an accident. Question are asked if it was an accident and secrets start tumbling out.
If you look back, story in itself is not extraordinary. What impresses me is the buildup of characters and events leading story towards the finale. This one is not a fast paced thriller but more on slow discovery mission style. So go for it if you want that.

I think this was supposed to be a thriller. Not in the least bit thrilling, though. Slow moving, predictable and boring, with two dimensional characters. Despite the main protagonist being female, the women were unintelligent, gullible and naive. Almost all wrapped their lives around men. I can't believe I finished it. The most annoying thing was that when the characters were thinking or feeling anything it was said in the first person. For example, a woman alone in her apartment might think (no...more

When Mary Higgins Clark first started publishing, I couldn't put her stuff down. Where Are The Children was terrific and the next 6 or 7 to follow were great too. Then it seems she went to a formula, which was still okay because I enjoyed her books. Now I think she may be just a little out of touch with the way people actually speak and interact with each other. In one of her latest, a cop said, "Tell us where those little girls are, you bum!". Not realistic. Note to MHC - try reading some of yo...more
Neil's husband is dead from a terrible accident. What bothers Neil is the fact that they had a fight the night before about her running for office. As the people and circumstances of the accident are revealed, Neil finds she is in the thick of a much bigger plot of deception. Wanting to find the truth for herself, she starts to find pieces that just don't fit. Comments that are out of place and a associate of her husband that seems to be on the take. Throw in a Medium that can talk to her deceas...more
I have read alot of Mary Higgins Clark books but I have never read one like this one. I love how Mary Higgins Clark writes, especially how she writes her characters. She gives them so many details and so much depth that while I am reading about them I feel like they are real people. This book was no different in that aspect it had all the things I love about her books plus a bit extra. This book had a bit of the supernatural mixed in. This is the first book I have read by her that mentions anyth...more

How well do know your spouse? Nell MacDermott thought she knew her husband Adam until he was killed in a boat explosion. Then Adam's skeletons start spilling out of the closets. To complicate things, Nell wants to run for her grandfather's long-held congressional seat, a race which could be affected by scandal. Against her grandfather's wishes, Nell goes to a psychic and is given comforting reassurance. Nell's great-aunt (sister of her grandfather) places great faith in this psychic and Nell is...more
Mary Higgins Clark’s books always make me a bit nostalgic for summers when I was a child. My grandmother and I would trade these books back and forth, discussing and comparing notes on who had correctly guessed the plot. This novel, at thirteen years old, still counts as more recent novel and one that I hope my grandmother had a chance to read. It is certainly one of MHC’s better novels. Mixing together politics, psychics, and architecture, the plot unfolds in a fast-paced and entertaining fashi...more

This book seemed very familiar to me when I started reading it. The, I noticed that I did read it. But I didn't remember reading the entire story. So, I read it again. I normally don't reread books. It wasn't that exciting. Woman wants to fun for office, husband doesn't want her too. He's into architecture & land developing and he has a shady past. He kills people on a boat that he's on,escapes & dies in the end. I agree with another poster who said that this book could've been written in...more
I always at least intend to finish books I start, but, life is short and this book just isn't worth my time. To MHC's credit however, I managed to get through half- I'm sure that says something.
Unsophisticated style, too many random and unnecessary characters being brought into the mix, states the obvious ad nauseum, etc.
On the plus side (not sure if this is really a plus), it's an easy read and there IS a story in the midst of all the unnecessary details.

When I was reading this book, I thought I guessed the killer right but I was wrong. This story is about a columnist Nell MacDermott, a politically ambitious grand-daughter of legendary Manhattan Congressman Cornelius MacDermott and married to Adam Cauliff, an architect who attended a business meeting aboard his ship which was blown into pieces. Nell grieved over the death of her husband and wish to know the truth of her husband's death and his associates. While mourning her husband's death, Nell...more
More novel than mystery. Story og a woman who is considering a run for elected office whose husband opposes it and then is killed with others in a boat explosion. His death opens a can of worms for the woman because of possible construction fraud involving her husband. The story line also includes psychic connections as well. Over all a good story.

Boat is blown up with 4 people in it. Story revolves around Adam's wife. Grandaughter to a poliltician, she had many reasons to wonder about the sincerity of her marriage, his honesty, and finally discovers that it is his secretary who is the evil one.
I haven't read escape mysteries for a long time, and this was a good one to escape in to.

I've read several of MHC's books before, and this one did not disappoint. Twists, turns, and a great ending. The characters were all very well developed, and you even develop a type of sympathy for Adam, even though he's a bit of a bastard. I do recommend this book, and it will keep its place on my bookshelf.

Let me start by saying I'm not a huge murder mystery fan. I think it has something to do with not having enough patience to read through all the minute details to make a conclusion on who murdered whom.
But this book kept me mildly entertained. I liked the paranormal aspect the author threw in about psychic ability. There's a good, solid twist at the end that you won't expect either.

I read this book in two formats: paperback and audiobook
About the paperback... Loved this book!!
About the audiobook... I often listen to audiobooks before I go to sleep and I found myself trying very hard to stay awake to listen to this. Not good for the job performance the next day, but worth it.
