I used to really love Debbie Macomber books. Positively ate up the Blossom Street series as well as a few of the Cedar Cove series. Have started to tire of them perhaps, in part, because I came across one that was far less romantic than pornographic. This one at least is back to romance but there are too many intertwined story lines and not nearly enough character development. Each chapter contains tidbits of each of the plotlines so you never have the chance to really get inside what makes the...more

She appeared out of nowhere just when Seth and his twin boys needed a housekeeper. The house was a shambles and Seth was a wreck. Her name was Emily Merkle. And she arrived with a wonderful pot pie for supper and a "Mother Goose" personality. The boys soon called her Mrs. Miracle and Seth picked up on the name. It was some time before Seth realized that the agency had not sent her. But there she was and everyone loved her. She fit right in at church doing what she could to help. She even encoura...more

I almost rated this book even lower but part of that was due to the narration so I gave it 2 stars for the story which, although it wasn't my thing, wasn't all bad. The narration, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired. The narrator (Jennifer Van Dyck) has a voice like Lilith from Cheers (not bad) but reads like Captain Kirk (very bad). With the Emphasis--On the Beginning--of Random words--and Constant Pauses, I was Not--overly Delighted--with the Reading. I exaggerate, but unfortunately no...more

This is a fairly predictable romance. The catalyst for all good things happening to people here is Mrs. Merkle, called Mrs. Miracle by the five year old twins in her care. She happens upon a household in disarray one year just before Christmas. The twins' Dad is a widower who hasn't been able to shed his grief and can't get his household organized. Several previous housekeeper have quit and Dad is reaching the desperation point. Mrs. Merkle arrives at the doorway with a chicken pot pie and the...more

The help of a good housekeeper was all Seth Webster thought he needed and after his twin six-year-old boys (Jason & Judd) had run off all of them that the agency had sent over, Seth was on his last thread. The arrival of Mrs. Merkle (Mrs. Miracle) was just that, a miracle. In a matter of a few days she had not only gotten his house back in order, but the boys were behaving better than ever. With Christmas approaching the Church program was important to so many people, so when the director le...more

Mrs. Miracle - friend to archangel Gabriel and angels Shirley, Happiness and Goodness...

Seth, engineer, is the central character - his wife died in an accident 4 years earlier, leaving him with 2year old twin boys. Seth gave up playing the piano, a pleasure he shared with his wife, as a sacrifice and reminder of what he lost. at first they stayed with her parents, but at age 6, the grandparents decide that it's time for them to live with Seth... and his house is in chaos... they boys are rambunc...more

Honestly, I had seen this movie on either the Hallmark Channel or Lifetime, and had kind of half-watched it, so I new the main gist of the story. Still, this is a lovely, sweet story of "two wounded souls reaching out to help one another." Seth is a widower, still grieving for his late wife and trying to raise rambunctious six-year-old twin boys. Reba is still reeling after the betrayal of her sister and now ex-finance, and is scared to love or trust again. And through it all, is the wonderful c...more

This is a must read during the Christmas season--a classic tale forever. (Watch the movie, too!)
Three people say that it would take a miracle to straighten out their lives and the next thing you know Mrs. Merkle shows up. Seth has twin 6-year-old boys that are going through housekeepers faster than the calendar changes. Losing his wife 4 years ago has left him without piano music and love. His in-laws are also having issues, losing their daughter and the reasons they fell in love in the first pl...more

Dammit, I did it again!!! I went ahead and watched the movie before reading the book and it was quite a mistake. This was one of those cases where I wish I had only either watched the movie or read the book, because neither did the other one any justice. For example, the movie was a pretty decent one...not big budget, but it did the trick and it had a good cast and it was an overall good Christmas-y movie...however, the book was so different it isn't even funny. I say this, because the book had...more

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read its follow up. Here are some of my favorite quotes to entice you:

God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.
Some marriages are made in heaven, but they all have to be maintained on earth.
Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, faith looks up.
Pick your friends, but not to pieces
A successful marriage isn't finding the right person, it's being the right person.
Scatter sunshine.

Author Debbie Macomber has spun a feel-good Christmas tale, complete with a Christmas pageant, an estranged married couple, some feuding sisters, a widowed father with sons, a busy-body aunt, and more. And in the midst of these unhappy events, some unexpected help comes from an angelic housekeeper who reminds us that miracles can still happen. If you’ve read any of Macomber’s novels, you know to expect a happy ending, and even more so with her Christmas offerings. But it is still entertaining, e...more

I had heard that a movie had been made from this book, so I gave it a read. It was a fun, light Christmas tale. What made it more enjoyable was the presense of Mrs. Miracle. I really liked her and wanted more of her. Especially delightful were her words of wisdom at the beginning of each chapter. Advice like, God wants spiritual fruits, not religious nuts; A skeptic is a person, who when he sees the handwriting on the wall claims it's a forgery; If the grass is greener on the other side of the f...more

This book was cute. I started watching the movie on Netflix last week and liked it enough to track down the book (it helped that I've read Debbie Macomber before and thus knew what I was getting into writing style). There were things that were different in the movie compared to book and, as is often the case, I enjoyed the book more. Reba and Seth were really well done as were the twins but I must admit, I found Seth's in-law's story (their forty year marriage has hit a rut) much more interestin...more

I loved the character Mrs. Miracle. We all need to have someone like her in our lives or need to be a Mrs. Miracle for others. Yes, the story is too good to be true but that is what makes Mrs. Miracle such a warm and comfortable read. It's nice to escape every once-in-a-while from the confines of reality.

The chapters begin with quotes by Mrs. Miracle such as these.
"The best way to get even is to forget." (p. 15)
"You'll notice that a turtle only makes progress when it sticks out its neck." (p...more

Seth had been a widower for four years and, with six-year-old twin boys, had gone through many housekeepers. When a knock sounded on the door and Seth admitted Emily Merkle, she informed him that she was the new housekeeper. Due to her expertise with cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the boys, they renamed her Mrs. Miracle. Now that the homefront was taken care of, Seth wanted to meet the lady at the travel agency that he had noticed. Reba was the owner of the travel agency and she had notic...more

Lots to like about this feel-good Christmastime story. The recipes she included are worth trying, and I love the little proverbs at the beginning of each chapter. "If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, you can be sure the water bill is higher!" is one of my favorites. Some good life lessons come through this tale of long-held grudges, sentimental promises, and nannies that just can't take it. I want to see the movie, but I know I won't like it as well! It's light and fairly pre...more

Seth wife dies and he is left to care for their twin boys who are more than a hand full. Reba, after watching Seth through the window of her workplace, is curious about him. Mrs. Merkle a/k/a Mrs. Miracle works her magic and brings the twins under control and Seth and Reba together. Mrs. Merkle does what she does best and that is to save people from themselves.

I enjoy the Mrs. Merkle stories because they are fun, fast paced reads and well written. Jennifer VanDyck tells the story with the right...more

I was far more impressed with this book than I was with The Shop on Blossom Street, the first novel that I read from this author. Mrs Miracle was the perfect Christmas story, packed full of characters overcoming past hurts and finding love again, as well as mysterious and heartwarming "miracles".

The premise of this novel is that widower Seth's children are out of control and he's running out of options for a housekeeper when a lovely, grandmotherly woman named Mrs Merkle turns up unexpectedly a...more

I recently picked up this book because I wan to read something that has "Christmas" in the theme, and I happen to own this book, so I decided to read this book.

I read on the front cover that this book was made into a TV movie at Hallmark Channel. That's great, I thought. I've always liked those movies shown the Hallmarket Channel. It's usually full of inspirational and heartfelt stories.

And Mrs Miracle is indeed one such story. It's heartfelt, full of emotions, and with a light-touch romance o...more

As always, Debbie Macomber has given us a wonderful Christmas present in Mrs. Miracle. We have a heartwarming love story, with plenty of humor, and an inspirational message.

Seth Webster is a widower trying to do the best he can to raise his energetic twin boys, Judd and Jason after the tragic loss of his wife several years ago. All of the light and music has gone out of his life as he is merely existing, unable to let go of his pain. After a string of housekee...more

Widowed father, Seth Webster is finding life very difficult raising two twin six year old boys by the names of Judd and Jason. His latest housekeeper, Mrs. Hampton tells Seth that he doesn’t need a housekeeper but a miracle and quits.

It has been a week since Mrs. Hampton quit. Seth is desperate. He has called the agency about every day trying to get a replacement. They tell him that no one is available. Someone knocks on the door. Standing on the front porch is a grandma type woman. Her name is...more

This feel-good Christmas story had an interesting storyline. The characters didn't have the depth that I wanted, and the love story was more about attraction than love. I had a hard time with some of the scenes being a bit too physical. I'm sorry, but I don't want a Christmas story with an angel to have a feeling up scene in it. Call it prudish, but I think it was way out of place with a feeling of being forced.

I did, however, like how the recipes that were discussed were included. Some sound g...more

The second Christmas book on my list this holiday season, Mrs. Miracle is the story about an angel (aka Mrs. Miracle), who weaves her magic to bring love to two couples and a pair of siblings.

It was a cute book, and one that was made into a Hallmark Channel original movie. It’s meant to be an easy, feel-good kind of book, but not one with any depth or literary value for the erudite. If you’re like me, you would probably enjoy the movie, but find the book lacking.

This book reminds me of a modern day Mary Poppins. My friend says it reminds her of the Touched By An Angel tv series. It is probably a combination of both.
It starts off with a single father who is now taking care of 5 year old twin boys. His in-laws have been caring for them for the 4 years after his wife was killed in a car accident.
Mrs. Merkle (aka) Mrs. Miracle helps the family and others learn to forgive themselves and others. Mrs. Miracle also shares some of her reciepes in this book....more

Such a fun story, and touching as well. One of those that reminds me there are angels among us--seen and unseen. What I liked about this one more than others is that the story did the preaching. There were no long sermons or religious tangents. It was simply a story about a few different people who needed some divine intervention. It was a great one to read while I had the flu! Kate, you'll really like this one. I wish I owned it and could loan it to you.

Mrs. Miracle is a pleasant story to read during the holidays. Debbie Macomber did a nice job with the character development and weaving several storylines together. I loved the inclusion of the recipes.

The story was a little too predictable and came to a rushed conclusion with Mrs. Miracle leaving in a hurry, saying goodbye only to the young twins. The message of forgiveness is good, but you can't force someone to feel forgiveness in their heart. I felt that Reba was justified with her anger an...more

Did I mention that Debbie Macomber is my new favorite author? This is an excellent story that uses one magical housekeeper to bring together several people (romantically and familially) who need each other. The characters are believable, and the events and conflicts they experience make sense. I also loved that there are times when the title character is frustrated as well. A feel good book that ends at the right moment.
