Fuck.
Fuck the Wardens. In particular, Paul and his cronies. Though Marion can suck it too. I don't give a shit about her tortured past. She made a choice. Fuck her.
Fuck the Djinn. Arrogant assholes. "You broke him, you fix him." Fuck you Jonathan. He was "broken" saving your ass.
Fuck the Ma'at. Cowardly douchebags who are no better than the Wardens, and quite possibly are worse.
Fuck Lewis. She loves you, and you haven't spared even a pinch of care or respect for her. She would have gone along...more

It has not been a great week for Weather Warden, Joanne Baldwin. First she died, then she became a djinn, then she died (again) and now finds herself being back in a mortal body. Being mortal sucks, when you've had the power of the djinn at your hands. Meanwhile, teenage psychopath Kevin has skipped to Vegas, taking with him the strongest djinn in the world. But who is the master and who is the slave? And what's going on in the Luxor?

Once again, Joanne Baldwin is in trouble. See, she's died once already (which sucked), got reincarnated in the form of a Djinn (which was cool, but, ultimately, sucked) and has since been returned to living flesh (much cooler, though now she has to pee after long car drives, and she never noticed how much that sucked before being a Djinn).

Joanne and David are trying desperately to catch up with Kevin and Jonathon – Kevin has stolen Lewis’s powers, the most powerful Warden in the world and without them Lewis is slowly dying. And Jonathon is the most powerful of the Djinn, bottled for Kevin to use. Between them they have vast power and the potential for extreme destruction – especially since they’re extremely careless how they use that power. The growing instability is threatening a global environmental disaster.

I picked this book up in the library, having read nothing by this author before.
The book is fast paced, and the whole story takes place over a really short time frame of a matter of hours.
The general story is that Jo (the main character and a weather warden) is headed to Las Vegas in her viper, with her genie (who is also her boyfriend!), with a plan to stop some kid, (who it turns out is also a warden) from destroying the world. However, not a lot is really known about exactly what is going on,...more

It was still fun, but there were too many major coincidences, that kind of storytelling really annoys me, it totally takes away from my enjoyment of the plot twists. It just isn't believable that it could all come together that way, so it's not fun. It was fast-paced and had a lot of action, and there was some good heart too. Jo really does care about the Djinn and about the boy, Kevin, and people in general; she claims that she just wants to be left alone to shop and have fun but she can't help...more
Poor Joanne has really had a rough couple of weeks. She started on the run from murder charges, died, was reborn as a djinn, died again, and came back as a human. This book starts with Joanne and David trying to reach Las Vegas to stop the teenager, Kevin, who stole powers and enslaved the leader of the Djinn, Jonathan. Unfortunately they have not been able to make any progress as Kevin, via Jonathan always finds them before they get even close. Joanne finds herself stuck in the middle of a secr...more
Chill Factor has a lot of surprises in store for fans of the Weather Warden series. The pace is again, slow-moving like the first two books but it picks up later on. We learn more about Joanne and her past and how it relates to her vigilant justice-thirsty present self. She's certainly admirable as she comes off as a modern-day hero; trying to save the world, one freak storm at a time. Even if she exhausts herself well beyond repair.

Another fast-paced read from Rachel Caine! Aside from her predilection for cliff-hanger endings, which I should have remembered from her Morganville series, she writes some very fun books! I'm just glad I'm coming to this series late enough that I can read a whole bunch of them in a row, without waiting for the next one to be published.

After a long period of being too stressed even to read, this series was the perfect antidote, and it got me back on track, so thank you Rachel!
This is the Mills & Boon of the fantasy world, easy reading with very mild sexual references, quite a lot of slushy love stuff and far too much emphasis on fashion. Having said all that, the heroine loves fast super-cars as much as her Manolo's (designer shoes) and whilst she is certainly described as attractive, beauty is NOT her thing, model status...more

Chill Factor follows Joanne Baldwin, Weather Warden, as she attempt to fix the mess created at the end of Heat Stroke. Kevin, an angry teenager with a lot of power, has control of the most powerful Djinn and is keeping all the Wardens out of Las Vegas. The Djinn have been disappearing and the Wardens cannot combat the unusual weather changes without them. Joanne, who is now human again, has been sent in to try to get Jonathan away from Kevin and restore order before the world is destroyed.

Chill Factor is the third, highly entertaining installment in the Weather Warden series. Just like the first two books, this one had me hooked from the start. It’s fast paced and filled with action. Previous installments of the Weather Warden series have seen Joanne Baldwin face a tough couple of weeks. She’s been on the run from murder charges, infected with a demon mark, died only to be reborn as a Djinn, died again and come back as a human. She’s saved the world and seen her entire life thrown into absolute chaos. She has found love and lost it, been betrayed by those closest to her, and forced to betray in turn. And just when things should be settling down, it turns out she's in the eye...more
I sincerely had mixed feelings about this one. So I'll start with the good.
So happy to see the return of the flashbacks. I kind of missed them in the last one but I knew that the author was probably trying to make it seem like Jo was in a djinn life now, not her human so memories weren't as important to the story line. Even if it was only one memory, it's still nice to hear more about Joanne and her never-failing-to-excite-and-endanger adventures.

After DNFing the first book in this series, I am really glad that I gave it a second chance. I love Joanne and the world that Rachel Caine has created for her. The last two books have been crazy filled with action and emotion. In Chill Factor, I found myself on a rollercoaster ride unsure of what was going to happen next and I loved every minute of it…okay almost every minute. There were some points that lagged a little, but I overlooked them because I knew that they would mean something in the...more

The one thing that strikes me about the third instalment of the Weather Warden series is that the Djinn's servitude seems suddenly very easy to transfer. From the first book I got the idea that once you'd bound a Djinn to you, they were with you for life or until their bottle got broken... I can't fathom why people wouldn't be sharing them around or stealing them all the time if it was as easy as it seems in Chill Factor.

This one was a little hard to take, Joanne is used by everyone in this one and only Dijinn turn infrit Rahel seems to really do her any favors. Even Jonathan, who hates her, does more for Jo than any of her "friends". I almost stop reading it when I learnt who was behind her torture at the hands of the Ma'at.
I am definatley glad I got this in physical form because the book went flying and a 3 day break was required.

I always approach books in this series with trepidation rather than anticipation. The main character takes more constant abuse in the story than Harry Dresden does in the Dresden Files. I like her attitude though. The whole weather control thing is a little weird for me still. I'm used to paranormal fiction falling back on more classic myth archtypes for their base (which I suppose the Djinn count as). This story didn't really expand the supernatural world as the others have, but it did complica...more

Chill Factor is the third book of the Weather Warden series written by best-selling author Rachel Caine. As always, I recommend beginning with the first two instalments of this series before reading this one, in order to allow the plots to run coherently.

My first thought when I started and then finished Chill Factor was that it put the whole series into a complete shift. Joanne died and was reborn Djinn through the first two books and now in book 3 we have her back to being human trying to right the wrongs from dozens of double crosses, past mistakes and current associations. We are left with so many loose ends it's almost a reboot ending and I hope that as a result we don't lose what was good about this series in the first place.

Really like this series. Main character Jo Baldwin is suitably kickass and irreverent - with a strong moral code great dress sense! (Of course). And typically the heroine is in trouble - trying to be the good guy - with everyone on her case and trying to thwart her efforts.
I did get pretty annoyed at some of the other characters in the book this time though. What is with the other weather wardens? and some of Jo's friends - well you know the saying - with friends like that who needs enemies??

I don't know what went wrong with the reading of this book. Probably nothing. Probably i'm just not in the proper mood to read this story. Although yes, i am getting a little tired of the constant sacrifice of one of the characters. In this book Joanne's life continues chaotic as ever. Her need to do the right thing, makes it hard for her to stay away from troubles. Something, that she probably will never be able to do in her life...

I really liked this book, once I started I couldn't put it down 'till the end.
Maybe between the three books of the series this is the one I liked less but only for a reason: I wished I could see a bit more of David and Jo together, as David is my favorite character.
But it was a good book and I am very curious to read the 4th book of the series.

More goodness. Joanne tangles with more flavours of bad guys, and the good guys are getting in the way again, and who is really on which side anyway? What do you do when you want to save the world, but pretty much everyone else is intent on disposing of you in an effort to do what they think is right?
Some icks from Joanne's past come back to haunt her. This part of the book works the least well for me. You'd think that an event as traumatic as that would have been mentioned already in the first...more

Again, this book seems to switch plot lines about halfway through. For the second book in a row to do that, I'm not sure if I like it. Joanne's constant referrals back to the fact she's human and misses being Djinn were annoying after the third time. Even her constant "I'm BA, but I need someone's help really" was getting old. At least the Kevin arc is wrapped up, and Jonathan ended up being a bit more villainous than he originally appeared in Heat Stroke.

This was good, I don't know about a thorough review though. This is in a series like any series book 3 can sometimes be pivotal. I for one found this to be an improvement and promise and have kept on reading other books in a series for less. I'm also a big ass nerd about science so if doesn't do it for me then I don't know what will. It was a good addition to the "warden" books. Between this and Morganville though I'm kinda digging Rachel Caine. Good stuff, check it out if you enjoyed the previo...more
