Cozy novels of village life are my favourite comfort reading, and I only wish I could find more of them. This is the sort of book in which _nothing happens_ except on a personal level -- people argue and then mend fences, gardens grow, seasons change, boys make friends, and occasionally there's a romance or two
These books remind me of Angela Thirkell, except written by someone a generation younger & so much less painfully right-wing. Miss Read is able to see beauty in a lot of thin More...

If you enter the world of Miss Read, you will be charmed as you are led into life in a small, English village. It's a wonderful world to enter. Thrush Green presents one day in a village life. It's the day of the fair. By the time the book ends, we have met the doctor, the new young doctor, the gyspy owner of the fair and his sweetheart, a girl of the village. We met other wonderful characters as the day progresses. If you read this book you won't be sorry.

A charming, gentle read. This is the story of the day that a fair comes to Thrush Green. A doctor contemplates taking on a young partner for his practice; the gypsy woman who runs the fair considers to whom she should turn over the fair; a sweet girl with a mean drunk of a father finds love; and treachery is revealed and justice is served. Engaging light reading.

This was a very nice story about the residents of a small town in rural England in perhaps the 1950's. Their trials and tribulations and the detailed descriptions of the area were a pleasant journey for a change of pace. Fully intend to read the next novel to find out what happened to some of the people. It sounds like a wonderful place indeed. However, I would agree with the doctor's wife who wished it was a bit closer to the culture of a larger city.

I thought I had read all of the Miss Read series, but I picked up a copy of THRUSH GREEN at a street market in Cambridge to read while traveling through the Cotswolds. This one I hadn't previously read, and it wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was fun to imagine the village of Thrush Green while traveling through that part of the world.

May 1 is when the fair comes to the small English village of Thrush Green. But will this be the last year for this traditional event?
I don't enjoy the Thrush Green books and much as Miss Read's Fairacre books, but listening to this while quilting was a pleasant trip to simpler times.

Listened to this as I drove to and around New Hampshire. Not sure that I would read it, but the reader does a wonderul job, and the author sure can paint a picture! The book takes place on May Day in Thrush Green, a village in the Cotswolds; wonderful characterization, you can picture the people. I will definitely listen to more of these.

This is the first in a sedate series of books that makes for easy listening as I work/drive.....I liked the believable characters/situations, but it isn't a thriller....just predictable & clean.

Enjoyed this much more than I expected to. Lots of wonderful characters, gentle humor, and a day in the life that had plenty going on, but none of it forced or too coincidental. Will have to check out more of Miss Read's stuff.

For another cheerful series set in a fictional town full of quirky and enjoyable characters, try Thrush Green by Miss Read. This is a first in in a warm, engaging series.

Not my favorite Miss Read book. The entire book covers one day, so needless to say, there is way too much flowery description, and not enough action.

This whole series is a delightful escape into charming English country life. I'm sure Jan Karon read these before writing her Mitford series.

This book covers one day in the quiet village of Thrush Green and showed how interesting such a simple, short amount of time can be.

Perfect for those days when the world seems depressing, crazy and otherwise wreteched. The nicest and most reassuring of books.

Gentle little story set in Great Britain. There is something so soothing about hearing a story told in a British accent.

Utterly delightful. The smile on my face was as sincere as the warm feeling in my heart. Love, love these books.

Miss Read sets a cozy English village scene with all the fun characters you get in a small town. This series is good when you want a clean wholesome feel good book.

Perfect beginning of a series--introduces the village of Thrush Green, and its many inhabitants on one of its favorite days of the year, May 1st.

Written back in 1959, I found the writing a little stilted and I just couldn't finish it.

A sweet story with engaging characters, but not very interesting writing.

This one starts out dreadfully boring, making it difficult to want to pick it up again. I am putting this one aside for now and maybe for later too.

I loved this book! It was so uplifting and positive compared to so much of what I read or see in the world. I can't wait to try another book from this author.

The entire Thrush Green/Fairacre series is best enjoyed as audio books. I checked these out at our local library and listened to them while commuting. Every single one of these books on tape made me want to visit an English village and experience the quaint neighbors and neighborhoods in these stories. The series is definitely pure fluff, but I found it enormously entertaining, and a wonderful escape.

This story of characters in a rather charming and very tame little English village in the Cotswolds is entertaining at best. Nothing intellectual or awe-inspiriing or eye-opening but a few crisp lines and descriptions in an otherwise cheerful and unchallenging story.... but then this week I needed 'unchallenging'
