You may recall one of my reading objectives for this year was to read Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise. Like Jeff Smith's Bone, I'd heard for years how great this title was/is and just never took the time to investigate it. Well, while at the Great Escape for Free Comic Book Day 2009, I found a used copy of The Collected Strangers in Paradise, Volume One for $3.99. I read it in a single sitting and really enjoyed being introduced to Moore's characters and situations.

You know it's funny. I avoided this comic in the late 90s and early 2000s because there was already such a huge number of books in the run (I think I even said that to someone who turned out to be Terry Moore back in 2004 or so - oops!). But I really should have looked past that and picked up the books.
I see shades of comics that both came before and after in these pages. Even though this is realistic fiction, I see shades of Sandman. And the webcomic Girls With Slingshots definitely must have b...more

I'm going to review the entire series here because as far as I'm concerned, like BONE or CEREBUS this is one long epic story.
This book was a breath of fresh air when I first found it. Before I was reading superhero stories and while I liked other types (Sandman, Bone etc) Strangers in Paradise was so... different. Painfully emphatic and able to make me laugh and cry.
The main focus is two very different women who are the best of friends: Francine and Katchoo. There's also David and together the...more

I found some Strangers in Paradise graphic novels for cheap at the Oxfam by our house and having heard it was quite a good series decided I would get it. Graphic novels about women and their relationships and no super heros as exactly what I like in my comics! I did enjoy this one. It was a little on the silly side, Katchoos revenge being totally over the top. But I liked the three main characters (though thought at first David was a girl and was quite disappointed when he turned out to be a guy...more
My ex-comic peddling friend recommended this to me one day. I reluctantly purchased it, but was incredibly pleased with the results. I found myself reading & re-reading this comic several times that day.
The story starts off deceptively simplistic, with Francine once again brushing off the advances of her boyfriend Freddie. Freddie, fed up with her refusal to sleep with him, storms out after a scene with Francine & her roommate Katchoo. From there the story goes into several different di...more

My review from BookCrossing back in early 2005
Well, I was sick in bed this weekend, and was able to burrow into the covers to read SiP. I must say, that when my husband asked me about it, my first thought was graphic novel meets chick lit. But it was fun- Most of my thoughts have been expressed already by others. You gotta love idiot ex-boyfriends getting their just dues, and as someone said, women with curves. And one of the high points for me was the whole riff on liver.

Ok I feel weird about assigning stars to these because I am really not sure how I feel about them...I'm going with three tho because I think one of the major contributing factors to me assigning fewer, were I to do so, would be fear that these are tremendously stupid and all of you will judge me to be a dummy for liking them...on the other hand I do not know that I "like" them...there are serious flaws, and they are, actually, kind of tremendously stupid...
Hmmm, though I enjoyed this I had some real problems with Francine. Her neediness and her "I'll do anything just to keep a man" attitude grew worrisome as the stories continued. I was hoping we'd get to see her grow more as a character as these stories progressed but that daydream near the end proved she hadn't learned much at all and was disappointing. Loved over-the-top Katchoo though and would like to read more of her escapades.
Strangers in Paradise makes the normal everyday activities of roomates Francine and Katchoo into something fun to read about.
What I liked most about SiP is that the characters are realistic. They may be a tad bit on the eccentric side, but they are 3-dimensional people that you or I could actually know.

I knew this was on most adult best of lists but had never really had the chance to read it and I am glad that I was finally able to do this. I thought he really caught the characters struggles. It is definately for a certain audience and would not be enjoyed by all. I don't mind being uncomfortable at times in a book and this book did that just right. Adult
Got this for $5 at Danger Room. I'd read SinP before, but it's nice to have the very beginning on my shelf. Moore does a really interesting job of establishing characters and his way of drawing women is very unique. Great graphic fiction. Also, cool special features showing strips that include previous incarnations of the main characters.
2012 Reread: I got lost in this for a month. My very first full reread since the series hit its ending. Since I knew where it would start and go and end up. It was just as terrible, wonderful, painful, heartbreaking, heart healing, amazing as every other read. I never stop knowing my heart belongs to this.

Following the examples of independent comic creators such as Dave Sim and Jeff Smith, he decided to publish Strangers in Paradise himself through his own Houston-based "Abstract Studios" imprint, and has frequently mentioned a desire to do a syndicated cartoon strip in the authors notes at the back of the Strangers in Paradise collection books. He has also mentioned his greatest career influence i...more
