A psychological thriller about friship, drugs, and murder from the author of "The Vanishing."
Egon Wagter and Axel van de Graaf met when they were both fourteen and on vacation in Belgium. Axel is fascinating, filled with an amoral energy by which the more prudent, less adventurous Egon is both mesmerized and repelled. Even as a teen, Axel has a strange power over those ar

The author's best-known work is Vanishing. And here we have a kind of "Vanishing - the Sequel." Two Dutch youths, a boy and a girl, visit a cave on a summer camp field trip when they are 14 years old. Years later, he is a geologist and she is a gemologist and amateur jeweler. This shows how our lives are often shaped by experiences in our youth in ways we can't predict.

I found the plot a bit of a stretch in trying to imagine why a couple of middle-class, relatively well-off people would travel t

Egon is

A 150 page gem. Egon is a good 14 year old Dutch kid who is befriended by Axel on at a summer camp. Axel is wild exciting and loves to court danger. His first act is to climb up a building covered in scaffolding 'because there is no sign that says he shouldn't'. He leads Egon into sexual adventures and when they meet up as they grow older, more dangerous adventures. But Egon's first love is geology, and gentle girls. The deeper story is how someone who has no love for others disturbs everyone ar ...more

My review for the R.I.P. Challenge #5:
When I received it as a free book at the time, the only thing I knew about De grot (The Cave) by Tim Krabbé was that the plot involved drug smuggling. Not a subject that holds great appeal to me, and so the book sat unread on my shelf for almost 13 years, until I picked it up for this year's challenge.

I already knew from Het gouden ei (The Vanishing) that Krabbé is capable of writing a blood-curdling thriller, but still I was surprised by the high ratings Th

I read other people's reviews for this, and it seems like most of them were disappointed. It also seemed like most of them had read other books by Krabbe, and were mostly disappointed when comparing it to other Krabbe books. This was my first book by the author, and I thought it was great. I was wavering between "really liked it" and "it was amazing" and I may in the end go down to 4 stars, but I'm going to let the excitement of having just finished it bias my judgment for now.

I loved the nonli

A quick read, The Cave is a non-linear story about how one moment can change the course of multiple people's lives, forever. Disclaimer - The Cave is a noir story, so don't think that said moment is altering anyone's lives for the better.

Written by a man (Tim Krabbe), for what seemed to me to be a male audience, the Cave follows the story of geologist Egon Wagter. The story is told using different instances from Wagter's childhood, adulthood and so on. One would think the reader would get a bett

Who is Egon, the main character and what are his motivations? Dunno...
In comes this half whole person--a somewhat ordinary looking guy--who, with a wink and a sentence, has girls giving up their bodies to him, and his friend (the narrator) holding drugs for him, and people doing time for him...Come on, Axel is never even on the page as a person. He's a collection of "bad boy" qualities...This story was stale as dollar store bread. Sometimes, I wonder if us North Americans get riled up about fore

A crime story about how a single incident, a single moment in time can completely change your life. What would have happened if you had made that one decision, would your life have been better or worse ? You have to suspend disbelief a little bit, one of the characters does a few things that might seem out of character, but overall it's a good thought provoking read.

The Cave by Tim Krabbe (Farraf Strauss Giroux 1997)(Fiction – Thriller). This is a completely forgettable thriller about good and evil and the price of friendship. My rating: 6/10, finished 2003.
