I am trying to read all the Edgar Best First winners and this book won in 1949. The descriptions made it look like a gothic type romantic suspense and while it had those elements it was much darker and sharply written than I expected and I really ended up enjoying it though there was perhaps a bit too much melodrama at times.

Interesting and suspenseful look at the social mores of the upper class in the 1940s. Winner of the 1949 Edgar Award.
