Soultaker
by
Bryan Smith
Rockville, TN, seems like a normal small town. But in reality it-s become a nest of evil, the home of the Lamia, an ancient shape-shifting creature that survives by harvesting souls through seduction and manipulation. The Lamia has managed to enslave many of the young men in town, and many of the young women have become her priestesses.

Jake McAllister’s mother is worried because his younger brother, Trey, has been acting weird since he started hanging out with his new girlfriend, Myra. Although Jake can't believe that one girl could really make that drastic of a difference in Trey, he returns home to check things out anyway. What Jake doesn't realize upon his arrival is that most of the females in town consider Myra a leader, and that they are starting to overpower the men in town. Jake meets up with a love interest, Kriste...more
Pulp horror-paperback-author Jack McAllister returns to his small, white trash hometown to discover his brother's girlfriend Myra is a lot more than she appears to be on the outside. In fact, Myra's an ancient demon who gains power from taking the souls of those around her. Having taken control of influential people across the town of Rockville, she's planning on a mass soul-harvest at the local high school, a massacre to dwarf all other Columbine-type tragedies.

This is the second book by this author that I have read, and I have to admit… that he really doesn’t draw me in. Sure the writing was fine, there is sex, violence and little green scaly critters romping about… but I have the hardest time investing myself emotionally in his books.
So we’re in a small town, and some goth girl turns out to be Lamia, an ancient half snake deity who needs a jump start of souls… so she’s possessed the women of a small town and turned them into psycho witch...more

In order for a horror novel to work, the author must strike a balance between realistic and fantastic elements. Bryan Smith skews heavily toward the latter in his new release, SOULTAKER, which has moments of great imagination but too often emphasizes shock over substance.

Soultaker was my first sampling of Bryan Smith's work. I enjoyed this book even though I wasn't too crazy about the premise of the story, very cheesy. Basically, a very powerful lizard-like demon takes over the body of a young goth chick and wreaks havoc in the small town of Rockville, Tennessee in preparation for the Harvest, where she plans to consume the souls of many teenagers in order to recharge, live another 100 years with man she loves. The hero of the story, if you can call him that, is...more

It's been a while since I read a horror book like Soultaker. It has a sense of old fashioned horror that kept me guessing till the end.
I loved the ending, by the way :-)

By the midpoint in the book, I was ready to give up on it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a great first experience with this author.
The ending was pretty predictable, but still an entertaining and worthy read.
This dude doesn't just have to deal with the chick that's a Soultaker, his friends have to deal with EVERYONE getting possessed. Definitely a winner! Although I thought the end kind of predictable, but probably because I write horror too and try real hard to do twist endings.
For all those who said I couldn't have the best protagonist not come along until 1/4th of the way through my first novel, read this book and learn!

There where some really cool moments in this book, but overall it just seemed to fall flat.
This first half of this novel is 4 star material, and the last third of this novel is 1 star material. It sucks when a novel has an insane buildup followed by a rushed, crappy ending. Smith is a talented writer, but he offset the brilliance of the first half of this novel with the weak final act.
What can I say? I loved Bryan Smith's Freakshow but couldn't even finish this book. It had moments, but it was predictable and not very interesting.
After this one I'm not sure if I'll even give Smith another try.
